How to bleed bmw clutch (dead clutch pedal)

Hey guys just wanted to post this to help anyone who is struggling with bleeding the clutch system! This system is difficult to get air out of it!
Like how it's mentioned in the video tilt the cylinder toward the ground and open the bleeder valve once air has left the system close it back up and repeat the process!
if you have someone to pump the clutch that would help but doesn't seem to be essential!
I tried regular gravity bleeding and trying to pump fluid through the system and both of those didn't work so I hope this helps!

So I'm having major issues with my bmw z3 1997 the piston keeps popping off almost like it's exploding why is this I've put 3 on and ready for the 4th when I push clutch in to bleed it I can hear the piston shoot off

Do you think there's something wrong with the forks
@ProjectRacecar2
@ProjectRacecar2 4 месяца назад
Hi, did you just buy the slave cylinder, I tried to buy one from the auto part store and it was really cheap and made of plastic and had that issue, so it could be a faulty slave cylinder. The second issue could be that the actual piston isn't seating on the fork, if you can return and get a new slave I would do that

Ive bled the clutch system, I have no leaks and still a weak clutch. Do you think this indicates a clutch replacement? Thanks for the video and help!

Does the clutch pedal fall and not come back up? Also when was the last time the clutch was replaced, and how hard are you on your clutch?
@johncale814

@@ProjectRacecar2 the clutch pedal pops back up, but gets to the point where im flooring the pedal to get gears to change. Im easy on the clutch and have only had the car a few days. The previous owner had it two years and said there was never a clutch issue... when it gets at it worst, i will have the clutch pedal floored, and i can slowly feel it engaging into first gear.

So is it having a hard time engaging in gear? Or is it just a soft clutch feel? You might have to look into replacing the clutch! You can look up some videos on how to tell if your clutch is bad!! Maybe run some tests!!

@@jesuscervantes2988 it really depends on the age of the clutch, how hard you drive or have worn the clutch, it could be low on fluid or have an air bubble in the system, you could try to bleed it and see if that helps since that's the easiest and cheapest thing to do!

Ok so my clutch is few months old. I replaced the master and slave cyl, used a pressure system on the fluid reservoiv, pedal is very soft but it come back when you push by hand. I got out almost 1L of dot4 during the bleeding process and my pedal is still soft and air still comes out. I’m lost

I would try pulling out the slave and tilting it up vertically and letting it bleed that way, I tried the pressure system as well and didn't have much success, the gravity bleed helped me! I had a lot of issues actually getting the slave cylinder rod on the clutch fork, it's really difficult and awkward to put the slave back in the transmission, there is always the possibility of air in the lines just because of all the new parts, pulling the slave out tilting it upwards doing a gravity bleed on it and making sure the rod goes back on the fork is where I would start, it's all free, but good luck let me know if you have any other questions!

@ProjectRacecar2
@ProjectRacecar2 11 месяцев назад
From what I've experienced the reason why the clutch pedal is hard is because the push rod on the slave cylinder isn't touching the clutch fork properly, so I would pull off your slave cylinder again and make sure it's on the clutch fork

Perfect, so I did that the clutch comes back up now. It’s not 100% but it’s around 70% now the car won’t turnover. Think it could be because the car not recognizing the clutch is all the way down to turnover?

Seriously there's a design issue with these systems. I've removed the assist system, with pressure loss the system is not able to be pumped with pressure as the pedal is biased to stay on the floor. Thinking I had an internal leak in the master I replaced mine after the pedal was on the floor. Bleeding with a liter of fluid through a pressure bleeder and filling a 1 meter hose with bubble less fluid the issue persists. Great video! By the way the restrictor just pushes out of you don't like the damper. I thought that was restricting the flow to bleed so I pulled that out as well.

@MS-we4wi
@MS-we4wi 10 месяцев назад
No design issue, it's issues with people not knowing how to work on these cars. It's easy if you do it the right way/how it's designed to be done. Also it should be done every 2 years, it's a part of the regular brake fluid service on manual cars.

Techie question: I intend to flush, not bleed, my hydraulic fluid with a suction brake bleeder - old fluid for new - so there will be no air in the system (assuming I do it right!). Can I just keep pulling fluid through the slave until it turns clear, topping up to keep the air from getting it, without removing the slave? I'm doing my brakes, so I might as well do the clutch as well and get ALL the old fluid out :).
@ProjectRacecar2
@ProjectRacecar2 3 года назад
Yeah you can for sure just flush it out with the old and in with the new!! I would just go slow and make sure you keep it topped of so that you don't reintroduce air into the system!! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!!

@ProjectRacecar2
@ProjectRacecar2 Год назад
@@stepharballo3605 it is hard since you replaced everything to narrow it down, these systems are notoriously difficult to bleed, if there is an air leak it would also be dripping fluid places or there would be air bubbles coming up in the reservoir, have someone check the reservoir while you are pumping the clutch, but I would still recommend pulling the slave cylinder out of the transmission and tilting it vertically while someone in the car pumps and holds the pedal! Hopefully this helps!

So open your clutch reservoir, make sure to top it off fully, then flip the slave cylinder where the bleeder valve is pointing up, then open the bleeder valve and let fluid out let it drain for like 5 seconds then close the valve! Pump the stick on the slave cylinder 10-20 times, then tilt the cylinder up again and open the valve and repeat the process until your clutch is feeling better! Make sure to watch the reservoir that it doesn't drop too low otherwise you will add more air to the system!

So I have a 2011 135i. I had the clutch replaced 5k miles ago. I haven't been driving the car because it's winter. However, I took it to the store when it was -25. Before driving it I let it warm up for about 5min. The next day I went to start the car to drive it to school and the car lurched forward and didn't start (in 1st gear) It was stuck in 1st. so I turned the key off and yanked it into neutral. It started up just fine. I'm unable to put it into any gear while running. The clutch pedal doesn't stick to the floor but it doesn't feel like it has the correct amount of tension. The shop that did the install also replaced my slave. Do you have any input as to what the problem could be? Bleed the clutch? New master? any feedback is helpful. Thanks!

If the clutch pedal isn't engaging fully then you won't be able to put it into gear, so I would first start with bleeding the clutch and checking all the lines and connections since that is free!
