In this video I show how to bleed brakes using a helper. Bleeding brakes with a helper is one of the oldest, tried and true methods that can be used to bleed the brakes of an automobile. It involves having a helper pump the brakes for you so that you can pressure bleed the brakes. The key to properly performing a brake system bleed using this method is communication between you and your partner. This method was shown to me when I first started working on automobiles and I still, sometimes, use it today. It's simple and it works.
Yes, this works on vehicles with drum brakes as well. The bleeder screw/ valve on the wheel cylinders are used for this application just like on brake calipers. Be sure the drums are installed on vehicle before bleeding though as the wheel cylinders can blow out.
Note: As mentioned in the video, this entire video may not be suitable for all vehicles. Vehicles are changing rapidly and drastically. Please verify the information found in this video is applicable to whatever vehicle you are working on. Do your own research.
Note: As mentioned in the video, brake fluid is not good to come into contact with. See MSDS concerning health risks associated with brake fluid. This can be found easily online with a simple search.
Note: Typically if a caliper needs to be replaced it is a good idea to change the caliper on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. This is a good rule to follow to keep your brakes operating evenly on both sides of the vehicle. This process can be performed on both sides of the vehicle on the new calipers in that case.
