How to bleed the oil furnace

This one shows how the oil pump is bled and what different conditions mean.
This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

Grayfurnaceman, you are an internet treasure! After watching a few of these videos, got my tools together and in 15 minutes I diagnosed my oil furnace. It had run out of fuel last winter. Checked for spark, pulled out the burner and checked it over and wiped it clean, then bled out the fuel pump. Bunch of white fluid, then brown, then a bit clearer. All back together and voila, full constant flame, still running steady as I write! Thanks a million!

We're in between snow storms here in the northeast and this video was a life saver. I bled both my hot water and furnace burners today and they're working like a charm! Had a length of clear tubing available and as soon as I saw the bubbles I knew I was on the way to fixing the problem...excellent video series!

Thanks for posting this, this is the one in depth video i could find on the entire internet. My first time owning my own place and came with an oil furnace i have no experience with them and im the guy who wants to know how to work on/maintain everything in my home and garage so this was a giant help. Just a few trips to my shed for the right tools (my bleeder setup was slightly different) bled system till it ran solid, popped the fuse out and back in, flipped the switch to on position and closed her up, thermostat was stuck then after i fixed that she fired right up. THANKS AGAIN !!!!!!!

I just realized you had a bunch of videos. I wrote on one of your others earlier today and tonight about the screwdriver test. Went through all of these very nice videos but didn't seem to find my problem. I don't see anything that shows where the oil goes when it heads to your jet, through that small tube on back side of pump that connects to your jet. I am not getting fuel coming out of it, although when I disconnect all the way down at the pump, oil is flowing. Small line is clear though
@kirkeric

Ahh, now we might be getting somewhere. If you mean that tiny threaded plug with a hexagon, no. I inspected the old pump and I could not find anywhere on this pump to insert this tiny thing. There sure weren't any holes. lol Where does it go? I know the instructions cautioned about something to do with bypass or something (not looking at instructions at moment). Appreciate the help. You are getting me closer to keeping my family from freezing as the temps drop. :)

Yes, this is helpful and I hope I haven't bugged you too much on this. Just for final clarification on the outlet pressure, if I had place a tube on that outlet (just like the bleed valve), run the pump and nothing comes out, that's good indication of what you think - that the pump is shot? That about right? I have that Beckett 7505 system you showed in one of your videos too.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 11 лет назад
If you have oil to the pump, (this is assuming there are no vacuum leaks on the suction side of the pump, usually accompanied by an air noise from the pump) and there is no high pressure at the outlet, either the pump has failed or the coupling between the motor and pump is stripped out. Hope this helps. GFM

lol...ok. Any recommendation on what to check? I installed this thing precisely the way the old one was and everything is tight. Does this double line/pipe thing tell you anything more? I had a repairman tell me that I didn't even need to bleed it if I have the return but since it's not pumping oil....I need that first. Ideas?
@VanaruEngine
@VanaruEngine 9 лет назад
For checking spark, I got the idea to grab a nearby 2.5" wood screw and stuck it in to the spring on one side so the point was about 3/4" away from the other spring. Turned on the furnace and saw a healthy spark, then switched it off again and removed the screw. Easy and so much safer than the screwdriver trick!

Well crap. Got the bypass plug in and it bled just fine. Still doesn't fire up though. Seems to me, the only two things left to replace are the igniter and the nozzle, both of which I went ahead and ordered. One question I asked a while back but didn't quite get the answer is how do I test the igniter. Your demo has it out of the system to some direct power it looks like but WHEN do I do the screwdriver test if it is in the system? I could use a detailed answer if you would. Thanks.

Hi, I'm back. Thanks this tutorial too. Here's where I am so if you could be so kind, can you offer all potential options left? I replaced my pump (I have oil too), I bled it (even though I have a 2 pipe and I removed that bypass thing as you mentioned), I've replaced the igniter (which I just tested), and today, finally, I just got the nozzle and replaced it. Clearly it is not getting fuel. If I disconnect the outport on pump, nothing comes out. Should it? Screw adjustment? What else?

@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 11 лет назад
If it is sputtering or fog, there is air in the line. If it is a 1 pipe system, there is a bleeder that is the best to use to bleed the air. If it is a 2 pipe, it should bleed itself. If it does not bleed, you could have no oil, plugged filter, plugged line, vacuum leak or a bad pump. Hope this helps. GFM

@grayfurnaceman

If it is a 2 pipe, the tank is probably below the level of the pump, and wont easily prime. The allen plug is it. There should have been an instruction sheet in the bag with the plug. I have a vid on these, put in bypass plug in the search box. GFM

Hello GFM - I'm back now. So, I ordered my replacement pump and installed it. All connections tight, fuel line open and the reservoir with filter (the external one) is full. I go to prime the pump and I got some fuel that initially got in to the pump and bubbles and I've attempted to prime about 6 times and not getting a steady flow. Any ideas? I watched the video you have that's why I mentioned, I know there is fuel, line on, tight, etc. It continues to bubble so I know it;s trying too.

@kirkeric
@kirkeric 11 лет назад
Great. :) Can you just answer this one though. If I disconnect the tube coming out of the pump to the nozzle (the backend of pump), and do a normal pump prime should I see the fuel squirting out or is it forced out in more like fumes/fog? I just want to know what I'm looking for since at this point my focus is on getting fuel out the back end. Thanks.
@kirkeric
@kirkeric 11 лет назад
GFM - Thanks. I'm trying to be really specific. lol I have the 2 pipe and I realize I don't need to prime. I am just trying to determine one thing to narrow down. On the outbound small line coming out of my pump to the jet - IF I disconnect that and run my pump to prime, what should I expect to come out? A spray, a fog, a drip, high pressure stream? I want to know what to expect so I can try and resolve this. Thanks. Eric

Thanks for your fast reply. The furnace shuts off when temperature drop or not using after a while. When it is on high temp, it can restart on its own. You suggested that it could be a leak in the line from the tank to the burner, we want to assume that last because our line in under the ground and tile. My hubby said it might be the oil pump because sometimes he bangs/tap it a little, then it runs. Do you have video to show where he can replace the SUNTEC A2VA-7116 pump? good video. my tank was empty. got it filled, but not working. know I have to bleed it. quick question. I unscrewed the nut as to bleed the system. the nut didn't turn by itself... as I turned the nut, the entire bleeder unscrewed as well. the bleeder came off, but nothing but a couple of drips of oil came out. question: is that because the bleeder wasn't in place? or does that mean there's a blockage somewhere not allowing the oil to come out? Or do I just need to leave it open for a while to let out what could be a lot of air?

grayfurnaceman I just attached the gauge to the 1/8 gauge port and while the burner was running the psi was about 110-115 or so not bouncing around on the .50gph nozzle installed. With the gauge installed on that port is the psi supposed to drop to zero when the burner is killed? I might adjust the PSI a little bit more and see how the burn looks, but I’m still going to get my oil technician to look at the entire system and see what his thoughts are once I get the oil tank installed. I remember in the past you had told me that the firing chamber and firebox as I have witnessed while working on them in these units are extremely small. I have fully cleaned the inside of this unit but do you think it’s abnormal when you first fire the cold unit up to have a little bit of exhaust positive pressure coming out of the inspection port until it warms up and a little rumbling? It Seems to run fine with the 8 feet of 4 inch pipe horizontal 1/4 inch per ft and 3 feet of vertical insulated vent outside.

I have a situation... so one of my kids hit the red switch off and when I woke up there was no hot water or heat now I have a little more than half a tank of oil I tried hitting the reset button but it doesn't stay on I'm not sure why. I'm terrified to bleed the line myself to see if there is air to be cleared and away and have no man to help me can I get a step by step on how to bleed a burner that was built in 1940's

I've got a long fuel line to my boiler (about 60') from my garage to my boiler and I've always been plagued with air in the line but we recently switched to a clear ultra low sulpher diesel with a biofuel (2%) added and about 3 months into it the air in the line has me bleeding it every 2 days...Ever heard of a connection between fuel differences and air in the line? Hard to believe i've got a vaccum issue after all these years with no change. TY

I can think of 2 possibilities. If the boiler is much higher than the tank, it could be separating the more volatile parts of the oil. More likely, you have a vacuum leak in the suction line that is allowing air into the line. There should be no feral connections on the suction line. They leak under vacuum. The flare connections could be leaking due to not being tight or the flare itself is in bad shape. Hope this helps. GFM

grayfurnaceman Appreciate it very much. Checked it again today and (knock on wood) no air and seems to be running well. Think I'm going to have a circulator at the boiler installed to remove air from the oil going forward as this has been an issue on and off for the last 5 years and if I save one service call a year it'll pay for itself soon enough.

you need a tigerloop system. fix all problems with air guaranteed

Thanks...I had left that comment 2 years ago :) Sound advice though....A tiger loop has been installed for almost that long:)

I know it was 2 years ago but no one mentioned it and I couldn't help it because I do it for a living and it seems like people listen to youtube more than they listnen to the guy that has to fix it.

Have a 2 pipe oil line 60' each way , i here a high pitch whistle sound when burner is running , should I increase oil line from 3/8" to 1/2" any suggestions
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 8 лет назад
+Ray Dionne You can try increasing line size, but the pump may be failing. Sometimes when they run dry, they will start making that noise. It means a new pump. Hope this helps. GFM

If there is oil supply and the pump is turning, the pump is bad. GFM

If you don't want the burner to come on, remove the gun line and place it in the can also. GFM

maybe it's just me ,but every time I've used a paper cup or tiny can to bleed a furnace,My big feet or the hose tipped over the bleed can or the hose jumped out of the can... I now use a #10 can with the hose clipped to the can
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 10 лет назад
Good thinking. Especially if you are using, like I did, the clear plastic hose that stiffens up after being used for oil. GFM

i don't doubt it an other reasons is the ripoff prices of heat oil this days is having some people switch to something more cheaper like gas or heat pump

TRYING TO START MY FURNACE. NOTHING HAPPENS. IT WON'T BLEED OUT. DO YOU NEED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF OIL IN THE TANK? WE ARE VERY LOW. MAYBE 5 GALLONS LEFT.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 10 лет назад
Buy oil and hope you don't plug a nozzle. I realize that sometimes the money is not there, but running out of oil will cause problems. When you get oil, do a thorough bleed until you get clear oil. Hope this helps. GFM

Thank you. I also purchased a new filter from Home Depot. The other one was full of thick sludge.

This is sort of relevant, but for the first time I got a message from my Intech "Shutting down to protect sensor". The entire top of the burn chamber had fallen to the bottom and the system was exhausting into the home.

What if I am getting oil through the bleeder but not the line to the gun?
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 10 лет назад
I would guess either a plugged nozzle if it is mounted or regulator failure if the nozzle is no installed. GFM
@polygon344
@polygon344 4 года назад
Would a regulator just stop working or is it something that gets gradually worse? I have the same problem as the poster above. Oil comes out of the bleed valve but nothing out of the port to the burner when I close the bleed valve. Furnace has been sitting since early spring, worked fine all last winter and now won't ignite.

What do i do if the outlet isnt pushing oul into the fernace the inlet works
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 6 лет назад
First I would check the pump coupler to be sure the pump is turning. Then if there is no oil, you probably have a pump failure. GFM
