These are good techniques I've been using for some years as well. What can help is a "time extender" which is a very liquid medium (rather cheap too) you can add to acrylic paint to extend the drying time. It makes blending and glazing easier because you don't have to be as fast with it. I like to sometimes just dip my brush in straight extending medium over drying paint I already applied to smooth things out. I'm not hyper-realist like she is, but it has helped a lot for me!

I use a gloss medium in acrylic paint and it both makes it look pretty and glaze while slightly slowing the blending and making it easy to blend. It gives a nice shiny look and I think it protects the paint itself since it kind of varnishes it too

laughed watching this the entire time LMAO i've been wanting to get into painting and watching a lot of acrylic/oil paint discussions, and painting just seems a little intimidating to start (i learnt about mediums for acrylic, acrylic vs oil paint, what to use etc and im just noting down everything i might need huhu overwhelming a lil) but the fact you're just doing ur own thing, taught yourself how to paint, i guess just using brushes, paint, and water and just messing around is really inspirational!! watching this is making painting feel a lot less scary so thank you ^^ wishing da best for your studies!!

Thank you for that I've been an artist for a long time with acrylics and always wanted to delve into oils but they take so long to dry this technique would help me be able to use my acrylics and get the same effect as the oils what do. Your work is crazy good, I you should definitely keep at it because in a few years you could be truly next level (the level of realism you’re achieving at your age is already nuts- that’s not what I am aiming for with my work, but I would struggle to get anywhere near it, & I’m 30, though granted I’ve also only been painting seriously for a couple of years now). But I do just want to throw this out there: when I watched some tutorials about actually using glazing medium for proper glazes, rather than just water (which can definitely cause problems though it’s complicated & too much to get into here), & tried using glazing medium myself, that was a game-changer for the quality of the textures, luminosity- really the overall quality of my paintings. It may take a little getting used to (& yes, it’s annoying having to pay for mediums- I am one to make my own DIY gesso, to use water for some purposes, to waste as little as I can… But honestly, at this point I’d say investing in a bottle of glazing medium is on the same level of importance as not skimping on the amount of paint you use to load brushes or the quality of paint you use- I’m not saying it isn’t fine to call a glaze with watered down paint a glaze… That’s technically what it is any time you lay a flat layer of transparent paint over an area of dry paint… But in my experience, water *will not* have the same amazing effect that glazing medium does). I really love Golden’s “Glazing Liquid,” & I’ve seen Liquitex Glazing Medium used effectively too. Basically glazing medium provides a little bit of body to the mixture as well as a brilliant sheen (a glossy finish), so it creates an effect that water doesn’t (even if water can thin paint enough to make it transparent, as long as you don’t use so much that it breaks up & has problems with peeling & such). When you glaze with glazing medium, you just use a TINY bit of paint per, I don’t know, 10-30 drops of glazing medium depending on how concentrated or thin you want it- you don’t need much color at all, so it stretches paint nicely & pays itself off a bit on that front. But basically, because of it’s unique properties, when glazed over a very light color (a white or off-white or something), a glaze of a compatible color mixed with glazing medium can produce a luminosity similar to what people love about watercolor (as well as a gloss similar to oil). It’s liquidy, but full-bodied enough to form a nice juicy, thick layer, unlike watered down acrylic, so when light shines through it & you see the colors underneath, it’s like seeing them through a tinted pane of glass, similar to stained glass. And when used properly (with a very soft brush, applied evenly, without brushstrokes, & in the proper concentration) it can really transform a piece or tie it all together. Personally, I’ve really fallen in love with doing dramatic skies, abstract forms, backgrounds, & other elements in a bright color (I kind of like varying whiteish paints like parchment, titanium white, & unbleached titanium), which I apply with techniques that will give them a lot of texture (like stippling so they look like dried plaster, or palette knife, dabbing with sponges, or painting them on top of molding paste or uneven textural layers of gesso), & then when they’re fully dry, I’ll dilute a little bit of a transparent color with glazing medium- my favorites to glaze with so far have been alizarin crimson, green gold, & a couple of transparent yellows like benzimidazilone yellow or quinacridone gold (the replacement hues that are still on the market, of course)… But whatever is situationally appropriate; it simply works best with transparent/semi-transparent pigments. When I paint a nice, smooth, solid (but not excessive) layer of one of those over a light colored, textural layer like I described, the texture & underlying brushstrokes still show through perfectly, & it kind of works similarly to an underpainting (the darker values are still darker, the whitest parts are still bright & seem to glow), but it’s all imbued with the glaze color so vibrantly… Again, very evocative of stained glass or glazes in watercolor (where the white of the paper still shines through). Like I said, your stuff is already amazing (they aren’t just realistic & well-drawn, but very lively, unique, emotive), but I think if you started experimenting with using glazing medium this way to amplify the vibrancy of your colors, it could help take them to even higher heights & really bring them to life. Especially given that you’re already glazing & finding those sorts of techniques so key to your style (like at least 3 of the points on your list here have to do with watering down paint for transparency & glazing it on lol- you might be surprised just how much of an impact it can have; I think it’s very common for acrylic painters, especially self-taught (I am too, & had the same mentality) to go without exploring mediums (including gels) for a long time in their learning… It’s already very expensive, & it can feel like “what’s the point?..” But I assure you, there is a point. Given that you aren’t doing abstracts, you may not have need of molding paste, pumice gel… There are a million mediums & many of them wouldn’t necessarily help with the work you’re doing (that’s part of what makes acrylic so versatile, even though on its own it can seem very simple & plain compared to watercolor)… But even a small bottle of Golden glazing liquid (their products are top quality & you get to support a worker-owned business) is only like $12, & even that size will go a pretty long way (as well as saving you paint compared to the water approach), & I suspect it could really be beneficial for you! If you try it, take the time to get familiar with the effect that different ratios of paint to medium will give you (& mix it thoroughly)… I ended up just gessoing an old sheet of watercolor paper, dividing it into a grid, painting different patterns of differing texture & value ranges in different squares (using good neutral underpainting colors- burnt umber, burnt sienna, ivory black, raw umber, parchment, & unbleached titanium), & then I had a blast glazing over each one, testing all kinds of techniques for applying it, layering different glazes so they overlapped & optically blended, alternating layers of shading & glazing, dry brushing, palette knife- anything that came to mind… And I think this was the perfect exercise to get to know a new medium quickly, without screwing up a dozen paintings in the learning process. As a fellow self-taught artist, I have a feeling you also probably like to learn by experimentation, so it could be worth giving a shot! But in any case, I’d love to see what mastering glazing medium could contribute to your work. Few materials I’ve tried can communicate light so effectively (a subtle glaze of a warm yellow can really simulate sunrise/sunset light cast over a subject). And it even opens the door to the “old masters’” technique of creating the entire skeleton of the painting as an underpainting in one or two Earth tone colors (often they’d use burnt sienna, or maybe burnt umber if painting in a “lower key”) to provide all the values from the lightest white of the canvas to darkest dark. This underpainting would provide all the form, all that figures, & then all the color would be added as a series of glazes. Not to say you should go that route or that you’d even like it (your drawing is good enough that you could pull it off if you wanted!), but it’s an option to keep in mind. Oh, one other brief note. It seems like you manage fine as is, but if you want longer drying times for blending, you can also get glycerin from Walmart or a pharmacy or somewhere very cheaply (look online if they don’t carry it locally- I had to go to the furthest Walmart in my area), & all it takes is a couple tiny drops mixed thoroughly in a big dollop of paint to pretty drastically increase its drying time. Or, the pricier (but probably easier & a little more effective) route is slow-dry gel. I’ve only tried Artist’s Loft’s, but there are many brands. That has the added benefit of stretching your paint, like any gel, which is essentially just untinted acrylic paint base), but it definitely works. Just be sure to be more careful with your painting as it dries, as you would with oil, or an acrylic pour. It may not be AS slow drying as oil, but it can be surprisingly slow, & the last thing you want is to put a hand in something you spent hours getting just right. Anyway, keep up the great work.

Water is for acrylic what turps is for oil paint: it's a solvent. If you overdo it with solvent in your paint, your painting won't be archival anymore because the paint hasn't bonded properly. Does that matter? Only if you want the original painting to survive for generations. If you're just goofing around or just selling prints of your painting, who the heck cares whether the paint all flakes off in 100 years. :> That being said, if you want archival and you like lots of really thin glazes and ample blending, it's better to use a fluid slow-dry medium (or something similar) because it contains binder. You can go berserk with it and your painting will still be archival. =^_^= Your teacher probably didn't explain this coz she has no idea what she's on about!
I watched a RU-vid video from a paint manufacturer somewhere once where the person explained that there is a ratio (yeah, I forgot what it is) of paint to water that you cannot exceed or else the binders in the paint will FLAKE OFF in a couple of years. So, that is the reasoning behind the rule that art teachers use. You don't want to put all that work into a piece only to have paint flaking off five years down the line. Best to use a floating gel or other clear gel medium, which have acrylic binders to give you a nice glazing effect and extend your blend time. Love your paintings, Cam!!!!
