Thank you everyone for all of the lovely comments, it really does mean the world to me! I will try to respond to them all when I get a spare moment . Just know that I've seen them and that I am so appreciative 💛 I am working on my next video currently, which is a little more relaxed than this one. Honestly, I've been in art school for years and I've learned more in this video than at school. I definitely appreciate the work you put into this video. Thank you.
“Throughout the entire portrait painting process you are making choices. Some are going to be good choices and some are going to be bad choices. That’s just the way painting is. We are ultimately aiming to have more good choices than the bad and that can only really come from practice.” I needed to hear this. Your video and teaching are excellent. I learned more in this video than I have in many I’ve paid for. Thank you and good luck on your painting journey!
I like that you kept the mixing palette so we could see how you mix the paint, it makes a lote easier to learn and capture how the paints react and interact with each other. Love your work, thanks for the video💕
You're very kind for making a video this detailed. I sometimes like the sketch too much I'm afraid to ruin it with paint but this has inspired me to actually sit and practice gouache portraits... Also I'm usually lazy because pencil sketches are way faster than setting up all the painting supplies and I'm very impatient 😅
I am the same with not wanting to set up the paints sometimes 😆 Thanks so much for watching! I hope you get the chance to get those gouache paints out and have some fun! 💛
I’m scared when mixing a color, that i dont have enough of the color and i wont be able to mix the same color again. I got worried when u mixed such a tiny amount for the skin🫣
This video is so incredibly helpful, concise, and jam-packed with no-nonsense instruction! So much of RU-vid is full of long, boring, videos that can’t decide if they are instructive or aesthetic-asmr. I learned so much in just 9 minutes!
This is exactly what I wanted, i have gouache paints and I have been dreading to pain some nice human heads and today I got the tutorial from my favourite artist ❤ thank you sooo much it means a LOOOOOTTTTT TO ME
I always have a hard time wrapping my head around cool and warm colors (especially with blues!). Thank you for talking about this a little more in depth, I think that solved some issues for me ♥🙏🏻
I've been learning and practicing painting with gouache for maybe a year now, by myself, just like I did with pencil portraits, and when I see someone more skilled than me doing the things I learned on my own, it really makes me proud, like "oh my god, I do it the right way." When you picked up that lilac gouache, my eyes widened with recognition! An incredible video!!
@@emhuesart I noticed that as I was scrolling through your stuff right after I finished the video! Already saved to watch as soon as I get the time. I'm excited to see your updated insights!
I just wanted to tell you how excellent this video was. It was so detailed and helpful. Aside from that, it was inspiring also. Making something that was so hard for me feel attainable made me pull out my paints that I’d shoved away for a while. I’m genuinely grateful, thank you.
I am fairly new to portraits, especially painting them and this video has been so helpful and making me excited to try and paint again❤would love more of these how to videos is possible xx
I love your style soo much, it's just as soothing on the eyes as your voice is to the ear. I aspire to paint this well one day, although I'm just now seeing your art, this is seriously inspiring me!
WOW! Awesome video - she knows what she's doing:) Never tried gouache, as I'm scared about it drying so fast. Thank you and glad to see you're responsive to your viewers.
I really enjoyed this video! I appreciate how you used small blocks of color to represent darks and lights, knowing that the finishing touches can be added in the end. This portrait was so interesting to watch!❤ Thank you!😊
this was the exact video I was looking for! You are very talented. I loved this video, I needed a little refresher and a cash course because I've never used gouache. It really reminds me of how I was taught to paint when I went to art school 20+ years ago!!
Ooh that's amazing! I think for me, the direction of brushstrokes is the most important thing to consider when trying to achieve this style 💛 I'm so glad you enjoyed Christine!
This was so so useful Emily! I SO appreciate how you walked us through everything with so much detail. I think I've said this to you before but the looseness yet precision of your portrait brushstrokes is so captivating to me 😍
Thank you so much. You are such a good teacher. I've seen so many youtube videos and you actually talked about things I haven't seen before. That's amazing. I'm so happy you started a channel and please do more tutorials!
Oh my! Thank you SO much for this. I've been getting into gouache from doing watercolor portraits and was having some difficulties. Very happy the algorithm brought me here! Also, the fact that you show your reference and palette is very helpful, and something I find frustrating that many art videos (RU-vid or other sources) don't do. Subbed!
I appreciate you so so much for this, I don't have the resources to go to art school, and you make it accesible. May your pillow be always cold, and your tummy full ❤🩹
Perhaps the best portrait tutorial I’ve ever seen. Your understanding of color, and more importantly your ability to articulate what you’re SEEING, is brilliant. Great work and thanks for sharing !
Thank you so much, that was amazing! So helpful and full of tips and knowledge. I loved the portrait you did - wow - you are so talented. I will love to give it a try in Gouache. You have really motivated me!💕
Gosh this makes me so inspired to paint faces! I love the head values explanation and the little red nuances in the portrait, it certainly makes for a more interesting study! Thank you for the great video 💙
RU-vid randomly recommended me this video and I absolutely loved it. I'll have to check out your other content. This painting is amazing, I love your style. I learned so much about mixing colours, painting with gouache, drawing and painting a portrait, choosing a reference... Thank you so much for going into such details. Also, the video was organized so nicely!
Oh my, what is not perfect? It’s beautiful and perfect. Art if not hyper realistic it should be an impression, an expression, a symbol. What’s important is to capture the likeness, the mood, and the spirit or personality as much as possible, not exact…. You highly talented and skilled. Thank you for all you share.❤️
this girl has one of the kindest souls in the world, this video is so detailed, her voice is so soothing and she basically replied to all comments thank you for this it helped a lot🫶
Omg Ive been religiously watching this video and studying every detail of it since I started experimenting more with acrylic gouache in the last few days and didn't realize how recently this video came out! I'm so lucky you posted right when I was trying it again!
The painting turned out so amazing Em! I'm super comfortable with drawing but frightened by colors. You've inspired me to keep trying and get more practice with painting
Ilike traditional gouache because you can go back into and work it. I've only recently started using it in the past few years . I actually use watercolor and gouache. mostly because I'm inspired by Alex Ross. not sure if you've heard of him. I painted with acrylics for the longest time though.
I absolutely adore this. You gave us real time mixing. From all the videos that I've seen learning to paint with gauche is that its best to learn how to mix well and see what colour combination gives the best result so that you don't just collect tubes
Thank you soooo much for this lesson. You are a true gem in sharing your talent and knowledge with us. Please, if possible do more portrait tutorials, when you can.
Wow! What a brilliant tutorial! Must try this very soon! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge in such a beautifully constructed video. I’m so inspired to get busy after watching this ,you are a natural teacher as well as talented artist ! Loved this so much! !!!!
I love getting to see you mixing on the palette, I feel like that is such a crucial element that often gets left out. It's part of the process. In art school I often wanted to make pieces from the chaotic palette leftovers more than showing the actual painting I was working on. Your work is gorgeous.
WONDERFUL! Appreciate your generosity in teaching. Have learned so much! Thank you 🙏. It was the perfect level of detail for me - from the number of paints, the length of video, the challenge of the painting and your commentary.
I agree, a huge step up in my drawing game came when i blacked in the blacks first and then worked from that, it signifficantly cuts down the amount of time it takes to get to the mid-tones you need.
Thank you Liza! All of the lovely comments have made the time and effort so worth it 😊 I'm hoping to do more tutorial/educational style videos in the future!
Acabo de descubrir tu canal ..me encantó como explicas que color mezclar y como aplicarlo paso a paso ,sigo a muchos pero tú eres la única que realmente muestra como usar los colores y lo mejor como mezclarlos para lograr el color Gracias.
Haha my painting professor would throw a fit if he saw your pallet. Honestly that is how my process goes too, my pallet tends to evolve like yours, not super organized (I tried to make sure the prof never saw it haha). I really appreciate watching your process. I took an oil painting class so I know a lot in theory about painting and color mixing, but I honestly didn't practice a whole lot during the class. I don't have a pallet for my gouache paints so I was really frustrated with the mixing part. I'm gonna try to make more portraits over winter break this year, and get a new pallet! I'll be thinking about your video. Thanks for sharing!
Really like the white high points on the pumpkin. Can almost feel the plastic texture. Still can't get over how you get such a full impression with those broad chisel type strokes. It's very fresh and appealing.
@@emhuesart I used to stun the other kids in my art class by painting with linocut ink on a linocut roller. (About 3 inches wide). Lucky there were sheets of AO sized paper to use. You could get some really controlled lines that way. Started out as just a way to clean the rollers. then took on a life of its own.
You are such a great teacher! I love learning how to understand how to create different skin tones and getting to watch you both mix colors and paint. I love your videos!
thank you so much! this video is really helpful. i learned a lot with every little explanation you shared (like the red areas of light around shadows, or the tip about constantly rotating the brush to avoid repetitive shapes). this little bits of information are the most helpful. thanks again!!!!
How beautiful it is to listen to your narration! Your elaboration was like Story Telling. It reduced our tension and awkwardness towards our confidence if we can follow you in respect of trying our hand in making of a portrait.
Thank you so much, this is so great to hear! Sometimes painting is all about confidence! We all can do it, it just takes practice and the desire to learn 😊💛
