If you're going to use the smudge tool, I recommend that you go into your brush settings and turn on "scattering" this will help it blend much better and I personally use this form of blending often.
And turn off spacing under the spacing parameter, it will make the brush 1000% more faster and will never lag, please try it and tell me what you think
@@amalsyed5458 When you have the mixer brush selected, up, where you see "load", "mix", "flow" you will see almost in the corner "sample all layers". You can use this option too with the smudge tool.
such a bummer. my art sucks so bad.😣, i wish someone would share their art knowledge and critique my art video. feels like my art will never improve even how hard i try.
Thank you for demystifying the process of going from almost crude [but well-placed] blotches of pure color to a smoothly rendered final, and demonstrating how the simplest tools are all you need to accomplish the task. I have always had more of a head for linework than shading, so this is a much-needed roadmap to get from one to the other - thank you!
Updated tutorial on practical color blending in Photoshop 00:16 Video focuses on practical solutions for blending colors in digital painting. Challenges beginners to turn basic color flats into polished, smoothly blended outputs. ✦ Manual color mixing for blending colors in Photoshop 01:27 Pick color from one side and paint it on the other side, then repeat with the opposite side Continue blending new mid-tone color from central area and repeating the process until smooth transition is achieved ✦ Adjust smudge tool strength for better blending 02:41 Low strength results in slow and uneven blending High strength creates drastic smudging and lacks neatness ✦ Importance of keeping the wetness setting around 20% 03:55 Maintaining wetness at around 20% helps achieve smooth and clean blends quickly. Ensure all colors are merged into one layer to avoid distortions and achieve a smooth blend. ✦ Blend colors smoothly using low opacity soft round brush tool 05:06 Transition smoothly from one color to another for a gradual blend Use mixer brush tool for a properly rendered output on curved surfaces ✦ Achieving realism through a blend of soft and hard edges 06:21 Referencing good sources is important for complex forms and shadows Maintaining brush size control for selective blending to ensure realism ✦ Achieving realistic blending with various techniques 07:37 Adjusting brush size and using eraser for controlled blending Adding gradients and highlights for depth and realism ✦ Enhance details with veins using low brush size and high opacity 09:02 Use highlight colors to paint towards shadow area Add depth to veins with shadow color for volume and highlights
This is a fantastic video. I started digital art a couple of weeks ago and blending colors + smooth rendering were the things I was struggling most with. This not only helped a ton with the methods but also gave some insight into a workflow and process to accompany them. Thank you!
For the smudging approach: You can enable the brush scattering, which will lead to a pretty fast yet aggressive blending of colors. Depending on your brush, this also can result in interesting blending patterns. For the mixer brush: You don't need everything on a single layer without transparency. Turn on the "Sample All Layers" option at the top and it will basically do the same thing without merging anything.
I found that an ideal setting for the smooth smudge blending would be a 40% hardness round brush with scattering turned on and spacing turned off. Works very well.
@@TheGeekArtist HI, FIRST OFF I AM EXTREMELY NEW.....I AM INTERESTED IN CREATING MY OWN ANIMATIONS .....WHAT EQUIPMENT IS """"BEST""" A TABLET?? AN I-PAD??? W/PEN....???......THANK YOU AGAIN-----)))))
I'd love to see a tutorial for coloring and blending a face. Not cartoony, not hyperrealistic, just... believable like this arm. It would be so helpful!
I just want to say that I have been trying to learn how to digitally paint for probably 5 years and seen dozens of tutorials and have not made progress at all until I saw this one! thank you so much I basically just used a screenshot of the arm from this video and followed what you did along it didn't come out perfect but it's a huge step towards improvement! I posted it on Instagram I tried to tag you but I couldn't find your profile but I did credit your channel with it, again thank you so much hopefully I can continue making progress! LFG 🔥🔥🔥
When using the smudge tool, try a hard brush with the spacing turned "off". Don't set to zero - there's actually a checkbox next to spacing in the brush menu - un-check it. Then experiment with the "scattering" and "count" settings to find a combination that works for you. Check out the results. You can soften the brush slightly if you like. This is a great way to blend - it also works on layers with transparency, unlike the mixer brush, so for me this is a huge advantage.
Great advice! I found that an ideal setting for the smooth smudge blending would be a 40% hardness round brush with scattering turned on and spacing turned off. Works very well.
I've been looking for this kind of blending tutorial for so long, and here you come, handing me a hidden treasure chest out of nowhere. Thank you so much!
My problem is about the anatomy. I don´t know how to put shadows or lights depending of the volumetric form and the ambient of the draw or illustration
not supposed to blend my colors in ps easily for beginner specially mixer brush tool is not mixing color it spreads only one color from which side you are using your brush you have not tell how you have used your brush in mixer brush tool and mixer brush tool leaves some lines which do't help in belnding .
I was already using 3 out of the 4 techniques after a lot of trials and error, but I didn't know about the color blending tool. I gotta try this one soon to see how it merges with my workflow!
its amazing how other people do things flawlessly yet mines not even i struggle endlessly.. even though.. ill continue pushing on no matter what.. even though my art really suck, all i need is a harsh and honest critique.. even though itll hurt.

Am I the only one here who likes the unblended version of the arm better? XD Of course in terms of realism the blended version is objectively more accurate/better, but if the unblended version was an intentional art-style, I would personally love that way more. =3
Well this video showed up exactly when I needed it! The best video on blending i've seen. Thanks for explaining the 4 methods. I will be using the mixer brush now that I know where it is... :) You're awesome, thank you!

This is by far the best blending video that I have seen on RU-vid, thank you soooo much. I was wondering if you can make another video going into depth on color theory?
