Have a tip for you: duplicate the layer, and erase the part you want on one layer, and erase the other part on the other layer. You will have one layer with what you want to warp, and one layer with what you want to keep.
@@Lindorbuxian eh i can get all the anatomy right, but never the hands, because the hands and feet have their own anatomy to be studied, so i guess it depends on what you focus on.
Warm light source - - cold shadows and viceversa Neutral base color Basic shading Basic lightning Redish/orangish hues due to blood and loghtbing Contrast and depth Detailed and minucious shading Small details and highlights
@@thesilentkitten you're welcome. When coloring a character a darker tone I myself don't understand it. It's really not any tutorials that will go into deep details and break it down.
The biggest problem with skin shading tutorials is that they teach you theory but never practice. No one teaches which brush to use, what's the opacity setting, how to avoid layering shadows with multiple strokes etc. I learned theory so many times i can give a shading lesson, but i still cant do it myself.
to be fair this depends on the medium you're using. depends on the software (what brushes you have, what blending tools you have). as for the multiple strokes thing, one way i avoid this (in Medibang) is to draw with the (watercolor) brush at 100% opacity, and then to reduce the layer opacity until it 'looks good'.
This is soooooooo true!!!!! I hear what everyone who replied is saying, in that it's because it depends But it would still be so helpful to know anyway. That would be a great start! Then understanding color theory will allow you to improve.
I recommend Mmmmonexx beginner digital coloring tutorial Even in his non digital tutorials, he's really good at explaining coloring, strokes, opacity, etc Of course there's so many great artists offering to teach their skills on YT and it's really helpful, but for some like me, I need specific demonstrations to get better. So I understand from everyone's pov
ericanthonyj No, really! Its the first time I heard about cold and warm colors’ contrast, plus, this kind of shading looks complex outside, but it actually is really easy! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
This was great. Watching people make great images is good. But when you break it down, the basics of color, and how to apply them, then build on them is immensely useful. Your tutorial gave enough information, without leaving me limited to doing things your way. There is still enough room for me to find my voice, an still be rooted in the basic fundamentals. Thank you.
"Most of the beginners will take the basic color and just make it dark for the shadows..." *omg how did u know* Edited: well whatever this helped me in choosing colors, thanks
I can't agree more with taking small steps and not rushing to the end. Rushing through and wanting to se the big picture right away is what actually has held me for the longest. Thank you very much for your detailed techniques and suggestions. Be blessed.
Thank you so much for this! Super helpful! I always tend to rush and get impatient during my pieces. Being told to take it slow and really assess what's going on is an awesome tip!
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been trying to create more painterly pieces and I think this is one of those key things I forgot/ never had the depth of this technique explained to me. Seeing the break down of each layer really helped! Thank you so much for sharing!
Honestly there's a lot of talented people on youtube for drawing but you are by far the best teacher. You just explain everything so well it's astonishing. Keep up the good work!!
This was such a great skin tutorial! I've watched a lot of them, and this is one of the best. You are very good at explaining the steps without being too vague or too detailed about them. Thank you so much and I hope you will do a lot more of these kinds of tutorials in the future! :)
I love how he's so precise with every logic.. i mean everything makes sense. you can easily understand cuz of the way he explains the logic of how to color properly
I can't believe this was your first tutorial! It was amazing! You already taught me more than a course I paid for that spends hours on painting. I'm very impressed. Thank you so much for this!
Dear Eric, thanks for this helpful tutorial. Actually we would appreciate if you can help us to understand the brush techniques. What kind of brushes we should use for skin painting. Thanks
Thank you for this. As someone who has started recently down the path of learning digital art this was very useful. Your teaching style was very clear.
I knew all of this for the past 2 years, but now i'm trying to do digital art again this has taught me more and why my picture isn't going in the direction i want it to especially with the warm light to cold shadows and vice versa. Thank you so much!
I literally was drawing and watching at the same time, and at the end I just "And I love you with all my fart and soul" "Wait did he just say what I think he did? Did he really just say--"
As a self taught digital artist who only draws as a hobby, I had no idea about the whole colour spectrum thing with cool and warm tones being used to shade, thank you so, so much!
Honestly this video came at the right time because i have been struggling with painting skin for a while now so this really helped me a lot, thank you. XD
*adds in first layer of shading * Me: wow that looks pretty nice already Eric: it looks pretty terrible I would say Me: oh...I’m just going to burn all my digital portraits. Lol jk bro. I love the tutorial. May I also make a request for a tutorial video? I wanted to ask for like a beginner artist starter pack. Foundations an artist should build in order to become quick and efficient in completing pieces in the futures. Thank you!
I'm glad I was not alone to think that the shading really looked nice from the first step! when hearing Eric saying that it looks terrible made me feel so bad about my paintings xD
I just started digital painting today because today I got my first drawing tablet. Obviously I've watched a lot of videos over the past hours. You're the first one with a totally different approach, an approach that's way easier to pick up for beginners. At least for me. Honestly, your videos, especially this one, were the first that gave me the "yeah, I can do that' feeling. Thank you a thousand times.
Thank you for this tutorial! My comfort zone is Anime-style drawings, but I want to get back into realism. I work two jobs, so for me quantity can be difficult because of my time. I really want to produce more art. I do what I can though! :')
I suggest do as much as your time and schedule allows. Don't stress yourself because that'll just make it harder. Remember to have fun and just give your best :)
Nice tutorial, I like the idea of using cool shadows too but what I leaned from photo studies is that the cool color of the shadows are caused by the ambient light color (might be the sky) which reflects on an object and the ambient light is more prominent over the shadows because the area is not affected from the direct light (sunlight) So I think it would be better to use a cool colored background for it to make more sense, or turn down the saturation a bit more on the shadow color. Not complaining here, you get to make decisions for your own piece and it looks good anyway
You're correct, the environment does heavily influence the colors. Bounce light is really important to factor in but I didn't want to make this tutorial too complicated and long. Perhaps I will create another video in which I will explain some more advanced lighting scenarios. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it! :)
It's really nice after watching the video to look through the comments and find even more useful stuff!! And they're good things to keep in mind indeed :)
I'm really happy I found your channel - I just got into digital painting and i've been struggling more than I expected, but your videos really help me understand the process and the mechanics behind the art. Thank you :)
Your videos are really so helpful to me. The motivating tone and helpful way you explain your process is seriously making me a better artist. I cannot thank you enough.
Very good explanation! I wish it went into the "how" a bit more of actually painting the skin and hair, like how to shade and blend like that to make it look realistic. I hope that makes sense. Still, very well done and I always appreciate your videos!
This was a good tutorial and as a fan of your style it was both interesting and helpful, however, I think you could have went into more detail on your process of picking the value of different colors and staying consistent with them. Keep up the vid bro 👌👌👌
I wish you went into depth as to how you shaded,it would’ve been a whole lot more helpful then just undoing layers and explaining what we are looking at,that’s just me maybe. Nonetheless, still informative
You might have missed it; 4:20 - 5:30 (basic color palette technique), 7:51-9:13 (he says "study color", but means "study lighting and color") 12:56 -13:32 (details and highlights) and 14:26 - 15:23 (Most important part!)
I’ve just started digital painting... and as soon as I’ve purchased the program I was like.... I‘m out and then you come by showing me this masterpiece explanation. It motivated me not give up (yet ;)), thanks a lot!
This is really really helpful for a beginner like me who wants to know the important principles about shadows, highlights, colors, and such! Wow.. thank you so much for making this video!
I'm a little late but THIS VIDEO is literally why I went on youtube to search for and honestly I probably won't understand anything but the theory but I still wanna watch It and hopefully learn something C:
hey i just wanted to say that i just started digital painting about a week ago and i very basic knowledge of it being i can draw and can understand some of the point of view aspects and such but anyway ive been trying to find videos online to help point me in the right direction for colors, lighting and shadows ect. after watching about 45 videos yours has by far helped me the most and the way you explain things was very helpful .just wanted to say thanks and very good job my friend
Most of them are custom brushes (link is in the description of this video) but I could probably create the same piece with just the standard brushes that come with most programs. :)
*Every RU-vid tutorial on painting/shading/highlighting* Me "Oh wow this looks so easy, great tutorial, I can't wait to try this!" Also me when I go to shade my sketches "How do I draw again"
This was like the best and most helpful art tutorial I've ever seen, it's these sort of basics that artists don't really know how to explain, but you did it phenomenally! Thank you and your art style is so pretty!!!!
