Some little Scottish kids called my dad and they were like LeT mE sPeAk tO uR mAnAgEr when my dad doesn’t even work for anything and he was at home lmao
I used to mess with them by seeing how long I could keep them on the line. Stuff like giving a made up credit card number and pretending the phone keeps cutting out or saying he had a number wrong when he repeated it back. Long story short, I started getting like 15x more calls
I used to have fun messing with them when it was real people calling. Now it's just a recording instructing you to call another number to talk to "an agent."
You can do that with any smartphone "Do Not Disturb" feature. But you are not going to receive any calls from the courier delivering your package, or your bank telling you your card has been blocked, or your doctors reception telling you what test results came in, and so on...
You can sort of do that - set your default ringtone to "no ring." If you don't have that option, find a "silent" ringtone and download it for your phone - make it the default. Now go into your contacts and manually assign a normal ringtone for them. That's what I did. Unwanted callers can still leave voicemail - but at least they can't make your phone ring (I use an iphone).
I get at least one scam call an hour. My whole family started getting these when our phone plan ended and we had to sign a new contract to get one. We are convinced that our network provider is selling our numbers.
So... your steps are. 1. Download an app that claims to stop robocalls while it actively sells your number to said robocallers. 2. Put your number on a list which is the other best resource that spam callers can use. How convenient that we all put our number on a single list for these people. 3. Ask your carrier if you can pay more money for them to do a service they should be doing for free.
Corey Kinard just register for true caller with some weird name and watch the telemarketing commence. Some of them would you kind enough to address you by the pseudonym that you used to register for truecaller and truecaller alone. That's how you know they are selling your data, or at the very least, have some sort of undiscovered data leak (which I find is very unlikely to go on for as long as it did, without them wising up to it)
Which is why I stopped downloading third party apps whereever possible. On MIUI most of these features are built in. Especially things like call blocking. MIUI has this super advanced feature they call "Yellow Pages" that let's you flag robocallers and scammers. All these blocked calls get registered onto the Yellow Pages and get autoblocked for everybody on the OS. I went from getting dozens of these calls a day to maybe a couple a month which I immediately block so me and all my fellow MIUI users can't be bothered by them twice.
The problem I find is that I have been receiving calls (which I don't answer) and they happen to have almost the same number as mine. The first 6 digits are the same as my phone number. I can go ahead and block the number, but what good is it if I need to receive an actual call from someone locally. Obviously the robocaller is spoofing the number to make it seem familiar so that I answer it.
I am having the exact same problem and have been ever since I got this number a few months ago. I used to only have like 6 numbers blocked in 10 years when I had my old number but, I looked at the list yesterday and I am now at 45. Registering on the do not call list has done nothing. Since I am new to where I live, I always answer my phone when it’s in my area just in case it’s something important but, I’m gonna have them send a voicemail instead from now on. Also, after about two weeks using the same 6 digits, they changed one number on it.
Same here. I got a call from my own number once too! Obviously blocking can't help with this. How are the spammers technically doing this? It seems to have just started a few years ago. Can't the phone companies stop phone number spoofing? It seems like it should be easy. I don't remember phone number spoofing being a problem in the past.
Try Call Control, by Call Control LLC in google play store. It has quite a few options of different types of blocking (including the spoof of your area code + first 3 digits). Just now downloaded it myself so no idea as to if it's good or not, but least might be worth looking into.
In Mexico there is a big problem with people in jail calling to scam, most of the times I don't answer but if I do I will usually just breath heavily or play weird metal songs until they hung up. And then call the national extortion service where they should cut the service of the scammer if there is enough complaints.
If I'm correct I believe TruCaller collects your phone number and your phones contacts and can then do what they please with it, like sell it to tellemarkers!
It is becoming harder and harder to trust third party apps to do things like this because they might be taking your data and selling it off to make their profits. Even Google itself was caught doing that. That's why I switched to MIUI. The same kind of feature as TruCaller is built into the OS and they have an advanced call list feature where anybody on MIUI that flags a number as spam or something will send it to the list and get it blocked for everybody else on MIUI. I went from getting dozens of these calls a day to only a couple a month.
Technically, yes correct, they do get access to your number and your phone book. They dont sell it, you are too cynical. I use Trucaller, my spam level went down 5 times. Not perfect but it helps.
These calls are so dangerous that anything can happen. Your voice can be used for identity theft purposes and hackers may want to steal your information. Ignore the calls or download apps to protect yourself.
Not only are the fake calls spoofing area codes, they're spoofing your *prefix* as well (the second group of three digits, which, in the days before computer-controlled phone back-ends, identified the exact telephone company local office your phone connected to) so it looks *VERY* local. Funny thing is, I know nobody with my same area code _and_ prefix. Makes it *REALLY* easy to just ignore those calls.
Google's beta phone app for Android now has this feature built in natively. You just check an option that says "Filter suspected spam calls" and it will no longer allow spam calls to ring your phone. They still show up in call history as a missed call though so you can see how much it's happening, and unblock numbers that should not have been marked as spam.
So who else thinks these apps he suggested in the beginning are also a scam to sell your info/number? The apps need to have access to you phone app on your smartphone so I am mostly skeptical.
FYI in the UK there is a service called TPS (Telephone Preference Service) which I think is the UK equivalent of the National Do not Call Registry. www.tpsonline.org.uk Once TPS have your number in their database it effectively prevents anyone from calling your number anymore for spam, marketing etc. Once added it may take 28 days for your number to properly be opted out Some numbers may come through, if they do then you can report the number/company and if TPS receive enough complaints, the company can be pursued and fined quite heavily if found guilty.
XD I got a message with a whole bunch of pictures, and then I said you got the wrong number and they just said “Is this Channon?” Lol watch it have been the same oerson
These apps and blocking numbers is total bullshit. Here's why... When the inbound caller ID is spoofed, it's often done so ONCE, using a randomized legitimate local number. Blocking it does nothing to stop same scammer from calling again with a slightly different number. What's worse, is by blocking a legitimate local number, you've now condemned the owner of that number - and when he tries to call others, he's number is falsely blocked. By spoofing random local number, the scammers accomplish two things - they get you to answer, and the render spam blacklisted databases useless because they start to amass too many legitimate numbers. The only fix is to block all CID spoofing. Unfortunately, there are too many legacy PBX systems which legitimately require spoofing to operate correctly.
I definitely want to know more about this scam and I want to continue receiving from you the new ones plz keep me updated in this. I always receive scam callers and I have answered yes due to this I believe I have been taking money from my bank and then I get an overdraft it is very upsetting for me for I live on a fixed income and I don't mean to take a taxi to the bank every time to find out what is going on or what I am being charged for and not being able to be told if it was something that I ordered which I never order anything online or by phone I go shopping when I need to go shopping and I don't appreciate people taking advantage of others like myself. So yes I do need to keep informed of this scam alert thank you for sharing your video with us and I hope to see more updates on your videos
My office has a setup where you need to type an extension to get through to someone or leave a message. I check the log in the morning and see a bunch of junk calls that couldn’t push two digits to access anyone. I’d love my non business phones to be able to do this function
Also one way I suspect they get your phone number is through people who install skeptical apps on there phones that needs access to there contacts and call log. For example grandma downloads solitaire from the play store and didn't know why and doesn't care why but allows that app to take advantage of her contacts.
Usually spammers start to call you when you sign up on a site and leave your number there and it belongs to a scamming/spamming company that doesnt respects your data privacy rights!
Today I received spam-risk call at 6:am, I am 85 jumped up thinking it was one of my children in trouble. If this happens again I will have to change my service. I refuse to pay to be annoyed
In other words; summing it up in a sentence. We’re screwed; there is no preventing annoying calls. The final solution; do not answer your phone unless the caller is in your contact list. Force all other calls to voice-mail.
I subscribed to RoboKiller a few years ago. It works. Unwanted calls decreased by over 90%. The more people who use the app and input known spam or robocalls the better the service works because it does not just look at numbers you report, it looks through ALL numbers reported by all users.$20/year well spent in my opinion.
What if we by default blocked ALL incoming calls. The only calls that would actually ring on our phones would be the ones we have pre-selected. This would take a little work but no more than handling spam calls now. Friends/schools/companies could just define a number that they will use to call with. If we wanted to receive a call from them we would just setup that number in our phone. For instance, our kid's school number, or the pharmacy we get our prescriptions filled at, we would pre-select those numbers to go through. Then, anytime we get a call we know it is from someone we want calling us. If everyone did this, it would essentilly end spam calls. The key would be getting everyone on board with presenting a specific OUTBOUND CALLING NUMBER.
If someone could invent a way to actually track and/or cease spam calls they'd become a billonaire overnight. In the meantime those apps are like a band-aid on a bleeding wound.
Great video... This used to be a non issue but, today I get about 1 a day, and it's a real issue now. Today the calls look like real numbers since they appear to come from my fairly uncommon area code.
I remember in my old school a number called my mom that said "scam likely" And she answered and it was the school but I didn't believe it was the school because the name was sketchy but luckily she never talked
Scam calls are robots..because when you talk to them they can’t comprehend to how I talk to them as I talk to a human, it’s always a delay between the conversation we have..😂
The Do Not Call Registry is ONLY for Telemarking. This is only for SOLICITORS. So if a survey company is calling...they are not restricted from calling. FYI.
Android has an inbuilt spam filter. Every spam call I get shows up as spam or marketing with the name of the person/company so I just disconnect and put it on block list. 1 years since the nougat update I haven't answered any spam call.
How can you be sure Google's only filtering the spam calls and not calls they hope you won't answer? After all they run a business on ad revenue. Maybe some poor sap trusted the company with his company's number on Adsense or something and then didn't pay as much as Google hoped he would so they pull this on him until he does. They've done it with search results. EU fined them a crazy huge amount for it so you know they do it. Wouldn't be a huge leap to think they could "Scam Likely" a phone number just like they suppress search results.
Ralph Lati It works like this, say if you have received a spam call and you report it, once you have done that and several others have done the same google marks it as spam. There is no auto detection, because in this process you maybe the first one to get a spam call and it will show in the whitelist. It has happened with me and even if I report it as spam it wont show as spam to others unless many people have reported the same. There will always be some problems like you said above but I can say that by itself the spam filter works and is very helpful.
"no harm trying them out"? You mean besides Trucaller downloading your entire contact list and then storing that for anyone to access. So even if you've never used their service your name and number are stored on their servers without your permission.
I get phone calls from random numbers but when I call back it just rings like they didn’t even call or there not at there phone at the moment but they literally just called what is this ? Maybe scammers calling from peoples phones ?
Do these stop the call or do they send the caller to voicemail? I have a Private caller and can not block them. It will send the call to voicemail and I want the call to me stopped before it gets sent to my phone.
I still don’t understand why there can’t be a setting on my phone that I can toggle that doesn’t let any number through that’s not in my contact list. I might miss a few legit calls, but it would be worth it. Basically, I want a beefed up, customizable Do Not Disturb feature on all calls except who in my contact list that also doesn’t block app notifications. Is that too much to ask for?
I rarely get calls so I just didn't set up my voicemail. I rarely get spam calls now that they realized they can't leave any spam messages on my voicemail and they instantly get denied if their number isn't in my address book. I get a spam call maybe once every few days. Definitely not a technique most people can use but works great for me.
I added everyone I want to take a call from to my favorites list, then turned on do not disturb with the setting to ring thru favorites... I now get 0 spam calls. The only downside is when you are expecting a call from someone whose number you don't know, you have to remember to turn off Do Not Disturb, or it will go to voicemail.
There’s a simpler way to deal with these. Just don’t answer any number that you don’t know. If they really want to get a hold of you then they will leave a voicemail. Only then you’ll know if it is a scam or not. In which you can block the number after if it is.
