Materials:
Marine Grade Outdoor Vinyl - www.sailrite.com
Stainless Steel Staples (prevents rust) - amzn.to/2DElvB5
Hot Glue Sticks - amzn.to/2V1Kf13
Automotive Headliner Material - amzn.to/2VwGFLv
Tips:
Be sure to use a high quality marine outdoor grade vinyl for long lasting results. Be sure to use stainless steel staples to prevent rusting over time. Be sure to use thin foam or automotive headliner material to wrap around the edges creating a protective barrier between the edge of the wood and the vinyl (not shown in video). This video is just meant to be a helpful guide, there are many different ways to do upholstery, this is just the way that worked for me, individual results will very.

Thank you.... I've taken my boat seats apart down to the frame. You've given me the confidence to upholster the myself instead of Donkey off $500 for a back seat

If you do the Blue first, then you could do a 3/4"-1" Catch loop with the white, so that water falls and captures in the vinyl fold, instead of working it's way into the wood! My wife and I just did a Seadoo Jet boat bench seat that was really hard, but I used the fold and it worked great!! Thanks for sharing!

Make sure you use copper or stainless steel staples so they don't rust out. I have also discovered to check the grain of the vinyl so when you are stretching it, will pull best in one direction. Look good enough for the girls I go out with.
@MileHighCampers

Agreed!! I may not have mentioned it in this video but yes I did use stainless steel staples. Great tip with the grain of the vinyl, thanks for sharing!!

I’ve used the monel staples instead of stainless. Supposed to be more corrosion resistant especially in salt water.

Hey nice job looks great!!! I have the same boat 91 Bayliner Capri not sure the model mine is the stern drive but everything else is the same. These videos are a slam dunk they are helping me a lot. What did you do for the seats did you redo them or did you by new ??
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 4 года назад
Awesome! I'm so glad to hear my videos are helping you out!! You will like the stern drive better, The out board can get in the way when doing water sports. The main seats, I got lucky and the previous owner had bought new ones so they were relatively brand new. I have talked to some upholsters and they have told me that it is cheaper to buy the main seats after market than it is too have them reupholstered. The cushions in the rear I did cover, but at that point I was so in a hurry to get the boat done for our first trip that I failed to capture that on video. I talked my mom into sewing them for me, lol! But you still could cover them by stretching the vinyl but you will have a fold in the corners more than likely. If you watch my final video in the playlist you can see that's how I did the backrests for the rear seats, it's not perfect but it looks alright... sometimes it's all about what your willing to live with. Anyway hope that helps!! Be sure to post some pics on instagram when you are done and tag us so we can check it out, would love to see how yours turns out!!

I wonder if it’s the same in every boat upholstery work shop. My friend does several boat upholstery projects and he says it’s hard to explain how they do it at the shop.

Staple the hell out of the tack strip and you won't need the glue. Nice work overall tho I think I will tackle my seats I was hesitant because I didn't want a solid color but didn't think of lapping the vinyl instead of sewing

What kind of tack straps did you use? Most of what I'm finding is metal.

I purchased mine from Sailrite, I'm not affiliated with them in any way so here is a link to what I used... www.sailrite.com/Cardboard-Upholstery-Tack-Strip-1-2

Where are your other clips? I don’t know how to get my panels off. It’s a 1987 Thundercraft. Should be EZ. I’ll be doing what you did to my boat when it get fixed. Did you use marine grade vinyl?
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 4 года назад
I have more videos in this playlist that shows removal: ru-vid.com/group/PLbCRDVO1HHsVcsmrpZ7eIbDEPesL7mRPO Of course every boat will be different. I did use marine grade vinyl.

Would it be wise to start from the bottom and work up? This way your seams overlap so water can't get to the wood.
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 5 лет назад
Looking back, Yes I would 100% agree with you. I think I did it that way because in my mind I had it that the carpet went on last because that's how the factory did it, but I would think if you reversed the seams that you are correct keeping water from being able to flow down into the seams would be much better. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

@@MileHighCampersthanks! Just an observation, being in the roofing business it seemed like the best way to keep water tight. I'll be doing this soon. Looking for materials...
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 5 лет назад
It was a great observation in my book! I'm not affiliated with this site or anything like that, I just like them www.sailrite.com/ bought some of my materials thru them. I got my vinyl thru a local Mom & Pop shop.

I’m wondering why you went from the top down instead of bottom to top? Wouldn’t having your bottom piece tucked under your top piece help shed water instead of hold it? Just curious I’ve never redid boat upholstery but I am familiar with water flow.
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 4 года назад
You would absolutely be correct! I cannot remember if I was just following the way it was originally or not, but the better way to do it would be to have the bottom tucked under the top!

Some of the materials I used for the project I bought from www.sailrite.com , the vinyl I bought locally from a fabric supply store: www.westernupholsterysupply.com Thanks for watching!!

can you just go over existing vinyl?
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 5 лет назад
I'm sure you could if you wanted to... depending on how bad the vinyl is the cracked you may be able to feel it on the new layer... but trying a panel to test it may be worth a try.

What type of staple gun? 18g

Yeah it was just a cheap 18G gun from Harbor Freight. Cheap but it did the trick! Thanks for watching!
@nalvarez3505

What type of vinyl is that?
@MileHighCampers
@MileHighCampers 5 лет назад
It's a marine grade outdoor vinyl made by a company called Morbern. There are so many different brands and qualities that it's tough to make a solid recommendation. My advice would be to do your research and go with the best quality vinyl that fits your budget.
