How to Bore Holes for Deadbolt, Doorknob and Latch Install | Metal or Wood Door

In this video, I cut a door knob hole in a steel door for a new deadbolt. This hole cutting method can work both for metal and wood doors. Having a door knob installation kit does make it a lot easier but you could do it without.

Dude your channel is a wealth of relevant info. Old house problems and knowing how to solve them realistically is priceless. Much better than these channels that are like "The floor is little uneven so we demolished the entire house and are building a new one from scratch, you can do it on a budget also!"

Another way of finding the strike plate location is to use AC foil tape. Place it on the jam and use the deadbolt to make an indentation.

Couple of Pro tips. When using a hole saw and paddle bit. Use an impact driver. This will save your wrists. When the bits meet the material, the impact driver will ratchet when it contacts the material. With the hole saw. Drill in and stop just before the core reaches the material. Put drill in reverse. Drill till the material is etched. Then put drill in forward. This will give a much cleaner hole.

I would also run the drill at a much lower speed on the metal part than he did here.

There's a Kwikset tool that you can probably find online for a few bucks. You take the knob off and stick this down the hole where the rod that connects the two knobs together. The tool also helps you remove the rod. You stick it down the hole and it will release the springclips that hold the key cylinder in and you just flip it around. I did thousands of rekeys when I worked at Home Depot.

The lock pins should always be at the top so that dust and dirt don't cause a "sticky" lock-set eventually. You installed the deadbolt correctly, but the doorknob lock is upside down. You can get your hardware store or home center to reverse the lock cylinder so that the pins are on top and the keys to the doorknob and deadbolt face the same way.
@mikewhittle3683
@mikewhittle3683 8 месяцев назад
While you're at it, you can have the home center key the two locks to the same pin configuration as long as both the deadbolt and doorknob lock are from the same manufacturer. I have one key that functions with all the locks in my house - 13 locks/deadbolts total.

Fixer, if you have come across the issue where the latch or deadbolt is loose or falling out due to the screws stripping out the inside of the door. There is a new door hardware that solves this problem, ReSecure Latch. No more glue, sticks, puddy, or that ugly metal sleeve that ruins the look of your door. They have demonstration videos on how it works here on YT. Great for DYI people, property owners/maintenance technicians.

Your oops is pretty much how I find where to find where the striker goes. Even with the jig when you’re pressed up against it. Make some slight marks where it’s bumped up and boom ya got it.

Looks like even if you chisel a little too deep for the strike plates it really doesn't matter as long as they don't interfere with the closing of the door.

Over the years the big thing I learned about deadbolts and handle sets is "no Kwikset hardware." Or, at least, not the contractor grade stuff used for apartments, rentals, and new developments - the guts are all aluminum and they wear on each other very quickly. My wife and I switched over to higher-end Schlage hardware, while her mom upgraded to some Yale stuff that normally would end up in high security commercial buildings.

You can sharpen those hole saws. Install a thin diamond blade in a circulating saw or a cut off saw, have a cup of water to cool the hole saw after a few teeth & grind each tooth till all are sharp again. I drilled 384 holes in plaster with a 3" hole saw and the hole saw got too dull to cut after every 6 holes. Note: to use a skill saw, mount it upside down in plywood with a slit for the blade and clamp the trigger on - use safety glasses. Every other tooth needs an alternating relief angle, left, right, left etc.

Thanks for showing your video. It takes a lot of hard work to do that doesn’t it you did a nice job if you buy templaco equipment and a router it should make your job 100% easier and you won’t have to buy any more paddle bits. just fostner bits. Your job will be done in half the time. Of course it will cost you an arm and a leg to get set up properly as you know, but boy, will you be the coolest locksmith in town ha ha😂

I've got the Ryobi door knob kit and it worked good. I didn't think about it till the end of your post your Ryobi driver. I've got one of those also but mine is giving me trouble. I can pull the trigger it will work fine but stop using it for 10 sec. and the light stays on and you can't pull the trigger. It will not work I can pull the battery and it resets until the trigger is pulled again. It does the same thing with 3 different battery's I have. It's like a year old thanks for any help .

You can get a combo where both locks use the same key. Never install a deadbolt that is keyed on both sides, don't want to use a key to exit in an emergency. Don't need a jig, lockset comes with a paper template.
@ekraszewski
@ekraszewski Месяц назад
Double keyed deadbolts have their applications. A door with a sidelight next to it or having a window close enough to the lock for someone to reach in and unlock the door is the most common. My advice would be to leave a key in the inside lock when at home and remove it when leaving. As far as the jig is concerned, it removes a lot of the possibility for error. Nothing worse than a door that’s drilled incorrectly because the paper template slipped.

@ekraszewski
@ekraszewski Месяц назад
You don’t. You need to use what’s known as a drive in bolt or round faced bolt. There is a way to cut the door edge to accommodate the bolt that comes with the lock. But it involves additional hardware and more work.

I'm not familiar with your area or even know what area you're in, hopefully it's safe. I was always told that if there's a window in the exterior door, the dead bolt should be the keyed type on both sides or someone could just break the window, reach in and unlock the door. I don't have any windows in any of my exterior doors buy only use the dead bolts keyed on both sides. Of course, you ALWAYS need to know where your keys are in case of any emergency. Also, if someone were to break in, through a window, they wouldn't be able to unlock and exit through a door with double keyed locks.

On a completely metal door, it’s easiest to drill the 1 inch hole on the edge and use a drive-in bolt. If there isn’t a way to convert the bolt that came with the lock, the hardware store where you bought the lock should have one for purchase.
@Guillotines_For_Globalists
@Guillotines_For_Globalists 8 месяцев назад
Since the door swings in I think you might want to get 2 pairs of those L-brackets that you would lag bolt to the structure and then place some 2x4s or 2x6s across so that the door could not be kicked in. If you were feeling like your neighborhood could be on the down-and-out, of course...

You should show how to do it without a jig. Where you would have to measure and square everything. Good job.

Are you aware that since exterior doors have a slight bevel, measuring from the outside and inside will give you different drill points?

You know what I had a problem with my locking and my front door and I was like the deadbolt and the other part of my lock and I figured out how to do it and I decided you know what what if I sprayed some WD-40 in the end the whole where the the key goes in and I put it in there and lo and behold guess what it goes in the key works easily and I don't have to fight with it at all and I don't have to fight with the damn lock trying to get it open at all I couldn't believe it when I put the WD-40 in it after I used it it's easy to lock and it's easy to to unlock with the key and to remind you lock it on the phone the inside it's easier to lock to so I can't believe it that that worked
