BINGO! I have been missing right for months. When I realized that I was too open and watched this video, I went out and checked it out: 154, 188, 251, 188! The lanes were dry, so I had lots of miss room on the right. Very encouraging for a 90-year old with a 168 average.

Last year in my league, I was really working on getting more revs and hooking the ball harder while still playing ten to seven. This year, I decided to ease up and just let the ball work and shoot around the same line. The difference is fewer splits, more strikes, and a plus 15 in average from 182 to 197.

I moved to a new town about a year ago and decided to get into a league after 9 years away from it. I've never had any coaching and i knew my release was weak in terms of rev rate and i realized how much I'd short arm my swing. I've watched many videos trying to learn the yoyo technique, and it just never felt right for me. When I'd get more hook out of the ball, it took me away from what has always worked and felt natural. So i went back to keeping it simple and focused on my follow through. That improvement alone, my average is 224. Last time i bowled league was 9 years ago, my average was 185. It's only been 3 months. I use 1 ball that's 12 years old. It's crazy how much a simple follow through has improved my game. Great video. Keeping it simple pays off.

Thanks fellows. I’m a 62 year-old lefty straight ball bowler. I threw my first ball about six months ago. Back then I was scoring in the low 60s regularly. Last week, I hit my all-time high of 123. Much of that increase is a result of your tips. This video is going to really help me. I’m sure of that.

Just started bowling in a league again after 20 years. Obviously I was struggling, and have been lucky to shoot about 110. I found this video 3 weeks ago and have been watching it every week since then 2 or 3 times before my Sunday league. I have been able to get back to my way of throwing the ball which is right up 5 to 10, depending on the night and have been able increase my consistency as well as my game. 2 weeks ago, I shot a 555 series and this past week, not as high still much much better than when I started out. I have been practicing more keeping my hips closed down and just letting the ball basically fall off my hand as Brad suggested. Thanks guys, this has really helped me out A LOT!

Two bowlers who are great to watch for those interested in playing straight are Shannon O’Keefe and Stefanie Johnson on the PWBA. Shannon actually lines up, hips pointing towards the headpin and begins by walking in the direction of the target. That allows her to open up a bit during the swing and yet be squared to the lane at the release. Shannon does this when she’s trying to play an extreme outside line, like 5 board and out. Stephanie doesn’t angle in to as extreme a degree as Shannon, but she is very good at staying square to the foul line throughout her approach and walking straight, something that is hard to do for a lot of modern players.

Good topic. As a senior, bowling on the house shot I found the broken or relaxed wrist along with less open hips works most of time. Have to expect more corner pins but it stays in the pocket more often. You will know on your first practice shot right away if you have to change for the lanes. How much time you have to spend on the game you can do more but this approach definitely makes it less frustrating on the house shot for sure.

I watch these videos to see what I can take away to use in my game (which is two-handed). My biggest problem in bowling -- and I've never seen this covered before -- is this: When I practice, I get my share of 200+ games and also a few lower games, say 170s-190s. However, in league, my game tends to fall apart and I'm too often in the 150s-160s. When I practice I often hit the 10 pin like a pro. Game time, I'm off. Something about being in a game just messes me up. Practice I'm relaxed. In a game, my mind starts to get the better of me. I don't know why.
@andrewsmith1358
@andrewsmith1358 Год назад
The mental game is the hardest part of bowling for many people (myself included). For me, it's all about getting a process together that starts in the settee area. Grab your ball the same way, set up your feet the same way, wipe your ball the same way, breathe the same way, count the same way. Anything happens to interrupt, put the ball down and start over.
@brigham2250
@brigham2250 Год назад
@@andrewsmith1358 - Yes, you are absolutely right. I have to work on my mental game. It sounds easy but I have to learn how to chase the negative thoughts from my head during gametime. I get this inner doubting voice that I don't have during practice.

Had rotator cuff surgery as a result my backswing is not very high and can’t generate much speed. Also I tend to chicken wing my elbow. What can I do to play straight.
@stompingpeak2043
@stompingpeak2043 Год назад
@@ronwalleck9973 just hold the ball higher when you start your approach and walk faster. You'll throw 20mph with a low backswing. It's all about the momentum of you walking/dropping the ball getting transferred to the ball on release. High backswings are really cool but not required in bowling. Just bringing back around waist height is enough
@andrewsmith1358
@andrewsmith1358 Год назад
@@ronwalleck9973 If you need to generate speed, yes, hold the ball higher when you set up. But what you really should do is forget about a high backswing, don't worry about speed, and worry more about your release. You chicken wing because you're bringing your hand around the side of the ball, whereas proper rotation is from staying behind the ball and "flicking" or "yo yoing" the ball. Think of the "yo yo" motion, that's what you want your wrist to be doing. Do some drills where you hold your hand under the ball and let it roll forward off your hand, coming off your thumb first. Then, when you can repeat that with just a small change in grip pressure, add a little arm swing, remembering to keep your hand dead behind the ball. Focus on the feeling of the ball in your hand and on your fingers. Try to repeat that over and over, and then add your approach and do it again. You will come up the back of the ball. You DO NOT need a ton of rotation to hook the ball, that is the point here in this video.

I recently started practicing throwing a straight ball and this video was very helpful. I was still trying to be a bit aggressive and will now start throwing a softer release. I usually average about 160 due to my inconsistent aggressive throw. I am hoping this change to straight will help me have stronger and more consistent hits in the pocket. For reference I have a GameBreaker and a Big Hit. The faster or harder I was throwing it, my ball didn’t have time to react and funny enough I’d throw 12 miles per hour, but the pocket and strike verses hitting the pocket anywhere from 15-18 mph to leave the 10 pin.

Ball either over hooks because I sent it to far right or goes straight because of oil length or volume of oil from 10 to 10. Now I play 10 to 8 and my thoughts are about setting the ball and rolling the ball. My ball speed is up with less effort and the ball is reacting more consistent. When I remember to keep my hips squared and not let the trail leg swing too far, I’m striking or just leaving the 10 pin. Honestly, that whole soft hand thing is a good idea, even when trying to cover more boards. I heard Randy Peterson talking about Pete Weber once...I think Randy said it anyway...Pete said, "if I feel it on my fingers at all," then basically it's not a good shot. Something to that affect anyway. I'm left handed and tend to use much more of the lane than most others even though I'm not a high rev guy. The softer I am with the hand, the better roll and carry I get.

I see something I've never noticed before out in you Brad. It looks like you don't get down in your approach. Bending down low that is. You stand more straight up. I've always tried to get down low to the lane. A few weeks ago I hurt my back at work so I could not bend too well. So I've had to stand more erect at the line and my game has improved because of it. The reason I'm talking about this is I always try to play the shot you are shooting right now. I love the straight Norm Duke style. I'm also using the radical urethane ball so a soft hand lets the ball read sooner just as you say. Great video, keep up the good work.

@billzwit4064
@billzwit4064 6 месяцев назад
Getting your hips to go down the “boards” will relate to your left and right shoulders being down the lane or with the boards. The trail leg has the angle of about 7 o’clock. Anything toward 8 o’clock or 9 o’clock for the trail leg, you lose the leverage on the ball at release. If you make a definite effort to line up hips and shoulders as a set, the slide foot direction will point front to back to the 3 pin or 6 pin.

straighter is greater is the saying, lived by that on the left side for 40 yrs. today house bowlers and league bowlers dont want to bowl straight with a slight hook they get all excited about watching their ball traveling the lane covering as many boards as possible. love seeing that and when they start missing,, bingo easy win, im a rev dom player but have my drilling to calm the balls down and adjust the cover to go from 10 to 5 and into the pocket

Do you guys recommend fingertip or semi fingertip? Also if you have different balls for first and second shots how should the two bowling balls differ from each other…is it weight? Grip? Is there a formula when choosing to go with different bowling balls for first and second shots? Ty

I am an old school shooter. Aim between the 8 and 9 pin. Let the ball go soft off the hand and let the ball do the job. If you try to over boss the ball, it will buck like a teenager in puberty. LOL I am now learning to go left and get more aggressive with the release.. avg went up 20 pins and I have a new weapon in my arsenal. Good video gents..

What are some tips for drifting to the left for right-handers?

It’s hilarious that peeps literally get mad at me when my left foot finishes at 17 and I throw up 8 with speed around 16.5 throwing a 16 pound ball and carring a 225 average. They tell me they can’t throw that because you have to be so accurate. I tell them back, it’s a lot easier being accurate when you have your hips squared and not turned, it’s amazing how you make WAY more spares too!! Great video!!

While the modern pro game has lost the soft-hand approach, it is still alive and well in many leagues. As a power stroker, I don't have the rev rate to open my angles significantly, so the best I try for is a soft hand, slower speed, letting the ball do all the work. Great topic. Controlling a reactive ball to throw spares is a top-tier skill, and players at all levels should strive to learn how to do it.

For anyone it is kinda hard to bend an 1/8 inch thick piece of steel. For newer bowlers just buy a robbys wrist brace so there is resistance to getting your hand in a really aggressive spot. I know they are a thing of the past for most, but when I was junior learning to bowl that is what I did. And once I knew what it felt like, now I just lock my wrist into that position myself without it. Am I crazy for thinking this way lol.

One thing I'd add to help keep the hips square is to keep your feet even instead of staggering them when you're standing there before you begin your approach.

I had a lesson some what recently and when we were working on playing straight he gave me this exact tip. You're eyes will play tricks on you like they said and it will looks like you are super closed and aimed left. But this tip has worked very well for me when I play straight up the lane.

Would be cool if B&K did a video about how to get the hips left, since I struggle with that and it's been taking me out of competitions.

I use a Motiv Venom and a RotoGrip UMC3. I like them both but the Venom is my favorite for now.

So what type of ball do you recommend for a soft release more straight bowler that still needs the ball to hook at the end?
