Cross training is the application of trials-based skills to dirt riding, and it's got solid backing from the world's top riders. Graham Jarvis says "Going fast is the easy bit. It’s going slowly that will help you develop control over your brakes. Often we have the incorrect mix of front and rear brake. You want to learn how to ride dirt bikes with our free enduro training videos? Our Cross Training Enduro is a mix of trials and dirt riding skills and techniques for when learning how to brake on a dirt bike. This dirt bike channel also had lots of wheelies, reviews, philosophy, and dirt bike fails videos. Initially, cross training enduro skills slow you right down (even to a stand still!) so that you can relearn key dirt riding skills then gradually build up your speed again. Your best braking is when the wheels are just short of locking up. Find a smooth consistent surface and practice braking hard enough to just start locking the front wheel up - just like ABS braking. In most cases about three quarters of our braking should be done by the front brake- even less if you are doing stoppies. Most of us favour the rear brake too much because it's way less scary locking up the rear wheel than the front wheel when learning how to brake on an enduro bike. Losing traction is a cardinal sin in trials riding, and riders go to extreme lengths to ensure their tires don't slip. Wheel spin and slides look great but in most cases mean you losing control of the bike to some extent. The top extreme enduro riders will only lose traction deliberately for certain techniques, such as locking up the rear brake to line themselves up into a tight turn. Maintaining traction is a critical skill in cross training. The growth of extreme enduro, endurocross and hard enduro events leads to cross training enduro - trials skills changed to dirt riding on enduro bikes. Almost all the best extreme riders are previously trials champions. Balance in your dirt bike riding also means you can spend more time standing on the footpegs in tough terrain instead of sitting - so you will have far more control when learning how to brake on a dirt bike. Your front brake works best in a straight line with the bike upright. In most cases you should avoid braking into a corner as the front wheel could wash out. A key part of moves like this is the use of body positioning and 'weighting' - choosing when to exert pressure on the pegs and when to 'de-weight' or lift the bike up. Everything in tough gnarly terrain is trying to throw you off balance, so balancing lays a strong foundation for enduro skills for guys like Jonny Walker and Ruben Chadwick. Don't overdo the rear brake. Most of us lock the rear wheel up way too much. Yes it can be useful, but most of the time it's sloppy riding that might feel good but just slows you down. Braking in cross training has a strong focus on being able to balance on your enduro bike, even at a stand still - this is a handy skill when you have minimal run up to your next obstacle. I've got the same sort of "encouraged to use 1 finger" front brake lever on my bike, it's a free mod, called "gravity" and finished off with a "grinder".

Good video. In MSF (motorcycle safety course) for street license in the US. They teach slow, head turn, press, lean and roll. Slow before entering the corner. Turn your head to look through the corner. Press on the bar to initiate the lean. Lean and slowly roll on the throttle as you exit the corner. Applies nicely to dirt as well as you mentioned. They also teach what your talking about what your talking about with braking to use both front and rear brakes so slow quicker. Also applies to dirt.

I find most ppl are too afraid to be anywhere near the front brake on corner entry when in actual fact trailing into the first third of the corner with 5 to 20% brake or so helps the bike turn in so much better as the front end is loader up, forks are compressed, rake angle decreases and wheel base is decreased which gives a real confidence inspiring sharp turn in... takes practice of course if u aren't use to it. Love the vids mate.

Trail braking can be useful on certain types of corners. Used it a lot on road racing bikes. A little bit so far on dirt bikes.

Great vid. Large aircraft max brake with antiskid (depending on conditions) to max perform the brakes. That's exactly what you simulate by braking at the limit of skidding on a dirtbike, max performing the brakes!

At the top of steep downhills, I like to quickly jab the front brake (untill it briefly locks) to gauge the grip level I'll likely have for that run down the hill. Don't be afraid of the front brake peoples 🙂

Well duh, of cource it is a different thing😂 But what i was trying to say is that there are alot of people who think everything related to motorcycles etc. is the same and when he/she said that he/she uses 95% front brake i thought that he/she is that kind of person.... that's why i said the obvious thing "dirt riding different compared to street riding"😅👍🏼

I found swapping from the 'standard' wave rotor to a solid pattern 'mud' disc helped immensely. You're not short on stopping power in your foot, but the extra pressure needed to lock up on the solid rotor compared to the wave gave far more feel.

@@ctonefar Since the sides of the rotor are the friction surfaces--the ONLY ones--why would the outer contour of "the wave rotor" have ANY effect on braking output, for a given amount of brake pedal pressure?

@@1TruePatriot It's not so much the outer contour, rather the lack of cross-drilled holes/slots in mud discs. Picture the full area of a brake pad being say 8 square centimeters; now two brake discs - one is just round, no wave and no holes; the other is a wave disc with plenty of holes (say a full 30% of the metal removed verses the solid disc, with the outer edge of the 'wave' matching up with the outer area of the pad). If you can put 20kg of 'force' onto your rear brake lever, then thats 20kg of force into the disc from the pads (I'm pulling numbers out of thin air here, but you get the idea). now, with 30% of the metal missing under the footprint of the brake pad on the wave disc compared to the solid (each of the holes is a 'void' that the pad cant press against), then there is more pressure and more 'grip' for the pads to bite with (you've got 20kg pushing against an area of 5.5cm instead of 8cm. Think force vs area; why a hammer will leave a little dint in a piece of wood, but will drive a nail right through it). On a road bike, this is great, more stopping power! But on the rear brake of an offroad bike, it's far too easy to apply too much pressure and lock it up, especially on loose downhills. But fit a solid/mud disc, and you have to apply far more pressure to lock up the rear, which gives you a more progressive feel to learn rear brake control. Hope this clears it up! :)

I need to find a rear hand brake set up for my quad, not being able to use the standard foot pedal at all and having the clutch lever also as a rear/ parking brake lever isn’t ideal In some situations if you need both at same time

not sure if it would ever happen. i gave up chasing manufacturers for bikes to review a long time ago, most never respond. only SWM and gas gas did.... eventually.

I went on a few rides with my rear master cylinder not working Ever since I hardly use my rear brake anymore. Only time I use my rear brake as when I want to slide . Also this is on a quad not a bike

Do you hold the clutch in when downshifting? For example, if you needed to come to a quick stop you would get off the gas--> clutch in--> downshift --> front and rear break

Good luck in contacting them. Terrible customer service! I’ve called, emailed and left texts asking about possible hydraulic rear brake for my Nissin brakes….they may have the cable set up and not sure if they will fit but the hydro system looks more promising. Absolutely no response or replies. They’re in Utah. May have drive up and drop in next time in SLC.

Gotcha. Years back I rode a bike with the Ox-brake but you really had to haul on that lever to get any braking. My fingers are getting too old for that kind of workout lol. I rode a bike with the Clake SLR which was brilliant. Very easy to lock up the rear wheel if needed, plenty of feel and control.

Front brakes are only good for flying. To make the most of breaking just mash the back brake and drop the bike.

apparently only for extended periods on long downhills as they run very lean in that case. i'm no mechanic though, this is just what i've heard....

Of course no has ever engine braked a 2 stroke street or road race bike, or a flat track bike. Not to mention all the 2 stroke diesel truck engines thru the decades. This horse shit of, don't engine brake a 2 stroke is horse shit. The cylinder is still getting some fuel in it at idle speed. If it seizes up you weren't running enough oil in your fuel to start with.

4:56, I’m pretty confused. Surely you can’t let the clutch be engaged the entirety of the time without allowing a little bit of slippage, right? Aren’t you just gonna stall the engine like that? Like I’m sure you need some clutch modulation, no? I’m very new to all this sort of thing

@@e.e9331 basically 2 stroke engines do not have valves, 4 strokes does. This produces a gas flow restriction in 4 strokes engines which is strong enough to slow down the vehicle substencially. 2 stroke will only slow you down due to friction of the different components, but this force is very very weak en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_braking
