New leather gun holsters can be very stiff when you first get them. You can stretch the leather and help shorten the break in period using some simple steps.

I like leather holsters for my two pistols and when I bought mine they were the same way to draw the weapon so what I done was I use wax paper from the cabinet in the kitchen and wrap my pistol kept it in the holster for about 2 weeks I'm with the wax finish of the paper getting on the leather inside of the holster it now enables me to withdraw that weapon very very smoothly very easily and not scratching up the finish

Tried this method. Left it for 48 hours. Worked great! Couldn't get gun in without slide moving and using considerable force. Afterwards, slides in and out easily, but still holds gun firmly. Perfect!!

Having worked in the shoe repair business and stretching leather shoes out, we used to spray alcohol on the shoes with a shoe stretcher devise inserted. The alcohol helped the leather stay stretched without discoloring or damaging the leather. I think if you insert the pistol while inside the bag, and then spray with alcohol, this should speed up the stretching process to overnight.

Just got my first leather holster for my EDC, always used Kydex before. It was VERY tight at first and I almost returned it immediately because I thought it was the wrong size. But, all leather products need breaking in. I did the plastic bag trick and now my firearm fits like a glove. And, it's so much more comfortable. Thank you.

I bought a custom made leather holster for my 1911 and the instructions with the holster said to mist the inside of the holster with a little bit of water from a spray bottle, wrap the pistol in Saran Wrap and stick it in the holster for a couple of days. Repeat if still too tight. I did this and it is a perfect fit now.

While your stretching the holster with the bag an old cobblers truck is to use isopropyl alcohol on the real tight areas.. this will shorten the break in without leaving and residue as the alcohol evaporates off.
@BoomStickTactical

It will also dull the finish and may even discolor the leather.

I had that same problem on an OLD (B28-Perfect Fit) kind of Hard. holster similar to this one s So after i tried 9 neat's-foot oil rub in applications, trying to slowly stretch it , I put my holster in water. Yes in water. just long enough while i wrapped my pistol in cerran wrap. I added though some strips of wood on the sides and top on the gun and wrapped it in the clear cerran wrape . I wraped it in this so the gun wouldn.t get water on it. I PUSHSED the gun in holding the slide... and PULLED (stretched) the snap strap over and snapped it . I let it fry over night so next day OH YA it worked.!!!! Nice holster now for my 380. thanks God bless

Good video. Much appreciated. I do prefer leather holsters and have several different models of hand guns. I feel that the leather holsters hold the guns closer to my body and therefore are slightly hidden better. The canvas/cloth/plastic holsters feel much more bulky and the weapon is obviously farther away from my body.

I had ordered a custom holster made for my sp101 but the retention strap was too short after I put a set of Hogue grips on it (off by 1/4") after working the strap and loosening the fibers and getting it snapped up I left it for a day and then worked in some mink oil (Just into the strap and used an old hair drier on hot setting to help it really go into the leather strap and left it like that for a few days and it's now a perfect fit with my hogue grips! ☺👍

The first holster I bought was a leather one from relentless tactical. The instruction that came with it said to get a nylon dress sock and put my gun in it for 24 hours. I did and my gun wouldn't stay in my new holster. I haven't had a leather one since then. The first cc1 I went to the instructor said I couldn't use because it took two hands to re holster. I put a light on my EDC and couldn't find a kydex holster that was "light bearing". I searched the internet looking and for one and the only place I could find was JM customize holsters. I sent him my light and a check and he was starting on it today (10-26). He's in Minot, ND and I read a couple of bad reviews, but so far he has sent me pictures every step of the way to make sure that's what I wanted. So I'm getting a leather holster that's re holster-able, according to him, with sweat guard, 0 degree chant. He did tell me with a sweat guard, my thumb may catch it when I draw. Hopefully with a lot of dry fire and draws I'll learn not to do that.

I know this video is old, but it’s great! Thank you so much for posting. I used your method and it worked like a charm. I bought a Galco leather shoulder holster for my 1911 Sig nightmare carry. To say that the holster was stiff and the fit tight was an understatement. Trying to get my gun in and out was a joke. I had even shoved it in and left it in for two days, did absolutely nothing. Put it in a freezer bag and got it in the holster. I had major doubts. There was no way I could even snap the strap. I did take it out the holster each night and worked the leather, I also worked the strap. Did this every night for 4 days. I took it out on the fifth day and it went in like butter. I was even able to snap it. I prefer leather shoulder holsters. Galco is by far the best and most comfortable. I did not like the leather hip holsters, didn’t feel right and honestly it made me uncomfortable. The Galco purchase was the best investment. I had gone through probably 6 holsters before I found one that worked for me. It was expensive, but I learned a lot from that experience. What my preferences were, what I liked, etc. Thanks again, much appreciated.

QuickTip to get your break in process done in 20 minutes. Take what you have there and put in large ziplock pour a smidge of water in and keep in the corner (not touching leather) and set it on top of a space heater. The heat/moisture will soften up the leather and you’re ready to carry out the door in 20 to 30 minutes.

I carry my Glock 43 in a Galco leather holster. It is an outside the waistband and is very comfortable. I just bought a De Santis Dual Carry 2 in leather and am stretching it now. It has the little strap that snaps on top. I put a sock over the pistol and forced it into the holster to stretch it. @@BoomStickTactical How do i get the leather to stiffen back up? I got a holster and, using your advice, got the leather to soften up nicely so that my pistol draws nice and smoothly. Problem now is I want the leather to contour to the pistol a bit better. Help?
@BoomStickTactical
@BoomStickTactical 4 года назад
@@gargoyleb stretching the leather using this technique shouldn't have made it any softer than it was originally.

Horse hide holsters do not shrink or expand like cow hide holsters do that have to have a snap strap to keep the gun in the holster

I'm thinking mink oil on the retaining strap, as it doesn't need to retain a form, but does need to stretch & to be pliable without tear. (It is v.tight, at present, 1st week). Thoughts?

Im sorry this may be an ignorant question but why use a plastic bag what purpose does it serve? And why not just put your gun in the holster and let it sit? Honestly wondering because i just bought a leather holster from 1791.

The thickness of the plastic helps to stretch the leather slightly more
