Breathing - so essential to life, and yet most of us are doing it wrong! Dr. Belisa Vranich, psychologist and breathing expert, shares some surprising information about breathing and teaches us all how to do it right.
Dr. Belisa Vranich is a clinical psychologist, author, public speaker, and the author of “Breathe: The Simple, Revolutionary 14-Day Program to Improve your Mental and Physical Health”. As founder of The Breathing Class™, Belisa has taught and lectured nationwide on topics related to dysfunctional breathing patterns and stress. The Breathing Class™ addresses both physical and psychological problems related to oxygenation that is out of balance, and teaches people to breathe in an anatomically congruous way that maximizes balanced inhales and exhales. Belisa received her PhD in Psychology from New York University and completed an internship at Bellevue Hospital with specialization in neuropsychology, psychiatric consultation and liaison, and bilingual treatment. An outspoken advocate for women’s health issues and veterans’ rights, Belisa also volunteers with several animal rescue organizations and is an advisory board member of Philosophy’s Hope and Grace Mental Health Campaign.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Lots of people making jokes about knowing how to breathe already, but breathing correctly during times of stress can actually save you 1000s of dollars in medical expenses - stress Fs your entire body.

Breathing is like posture. Most humans take it for granted. But breathing is the most essential process. You can live weeks without food, days without liquid, and only minutes without air. Wake up! Take care of breathing and everything else becomes easier. Great job, Belisa!

Whenever I maintain a good posture it becomes hard for me to breathe. The fact that she said that you can round your shoulders while breathing made me wonder how would we maintain a good posture when a good breathing technique obliges you to round your shoulders. The question that occured to me now is do we even need to be postured parallel to the wall? is it really a good posture? I've seen videos about the importance of a good posture but this and that don't fit for my personal case. I'm eager to some useful info about this matter.

Everyone thinks they "know" how to breathe. Most people think that they know how to run, too. But there are vastly different levels of skill. This woman is clearly an expert, if not a master in the art and science of breathing. True skill requires time and attention. Dr. Belisa Vranich is "a breath of fresh air" in the field of self-optimization. If you are serious about your health, study her work.

I have anxiety. Have had it for about 7 years also. Sometimes I even forget to breathe or hold my breath unconsciously. If I eat something that triggers my anxiety I get sick right away. Major stomachache which leads to dizziness, stiffen neck and shoulders/shoulder pain, cold hands and feet etc. After months of cutting out I ate bread and dairy over the weekend and immediately with lack of sleep felt sick. No energy all of above sensations. Short anxiety attacks coming and going fast. Just wanted something to calm my nerves and found this. It helped me relax quite a lot to keep my thoughts away from being anxious.

My thoughts exactly! If she wanted to help slow everyone down and breathe correctly, she needed to count slowly. For example, when someone is experiencing anxiety and difficulty breathing, you don't make them breathe at YOUR pace. You count to THIER pace and gradually help them slow down. She may be an expert, but presentation needs some work...

Dr. Belisa is incredible. Not only have I read her book...I've been in her workshops. Her workshops are an "experience" in which have taught me the importance of breathing. Now I'm a horizontal breather without even thinking about it. What's also great is that it's not so esoteric, it's scientifically based. It can only help. Especially for those who practice meditation, praying, in a stressful situation. It absolutely works. Hands down. I know from experience. When I'm going through stress overload, it helps every time. Especially when I'm working - many on my computer - I do her excercises while sitting at my desk. I recommend reading her book and trying it for yourself. And trust me, I'm a very skeptical person, but actually doing these excercises - it's changed me. I find I have more endurance and I'm not as tired as I used to be. I went from drinking 5-7 cups of coffee a day to just one. All I can say is it works for me. It's funny on how I see my belly breathing without even thinking about it. :).

Very good points and finally a breathing expert with a practical and science-based approach. I teach wheelchair Tai Ji and use many of Dr Belisa's technics (which can be found her book) with my students. It definitely enriches my practice. Breathing is indeed a natural mechanism. It does seem obvious and we shouldn't feel guilty to take it for granted. But it's far from being silly to teach it. It's also a science, an art and a powerfull tool. We need more experts like Dr Belisa and more videos about breathing! Thanks for sharing your knowledge...

I was taught this from a choir teacher in primary school, 3 singing coaches in career and an opera singer. I also deep cycle breath (belly breath) just as illustrated on every rep when I'm working out in the gym. Out on the initial lift and in when putting the weight down. Maximising the oxygen intake on the most difficult part of the lift, which is putting it down. I've found it difficult to show people how to do this. My singing teachers said push down when inhaling and singing higher pitched notes. It can be difficult at first but has many benefits. It is awesome!
