It is finally breeding time! We have been planning for this for several months, and it is finally go time. Eric went to artificial insemination school in February. I was supposed to go in March, but it was cancelled due to the Corona virus. We are excited to be breeding this group of heifers. They were all born and raised on our farm and now Eric is breeding them. We selected GAR Momentum as the sire. We were able to get the semen through Select Sires. Out of 34 heifers, we ended up breeding 27 total which is very good. Hopefully at least 70% will take. The remaining heifers will be bred by our clean up bull, which is an angus bull. In this video we will walk you through the process of how to breed a heifer through artificial insemination.
There are several different methods for artificial insemination, but this is the method we like best. Check out our CIDR videos to see the entire process.
In this video we use our Arrowquip Q-Catch 86 series that we recently purchased. It is our first time breeding with it and it definitely didn't disappoint.
Please feel free to leave comments as we always enjoy answering any questions. Thanks for watching!

What age or weight size do you look for before breeding a heifer
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 2 года назад
We typically breed our heifers when they are 14-18 months. Most of them are born August-October and we breed usually in December. We usually just look for uniformity in our heifers. If something looks small we always pull it out and breed it in May.

Do you guys do all your own synchro shots and stuff before breeding?
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 3 года назад
Yes we do. For a few years we had a guy do the breeding part of it. Eric went to a class about 2 years ago and started doing that part also. I went to the class earlier this year so looking forward to breeding some this fall.

@@FarmerHunt It is. I don't know anything about cattle, but I moved to a state a couple years ago where the main industry is cattle and I've been trying to learn more.

I’m still learning myself. I bought 6 heifers about 6 years ago and have been trying to expand since then. This is our third year artificially inseminating some of our cows and heifers. It has really helped us boost the genetics in our herd.

@@FarmerHunt What is your success rate? What percentage does cleanup bull get?
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 2 года назад
@@idahohops typically of the ones that come into heat (usually 70-80% of what we setup) we will have about 60% on the low end and 80% conception on the high end.

Isn’t it painful for the cow to place the Insinuation injection
@FarmerHunt

We go through lots of training to learn the correct way to do everything. With proper procedures it isn’t painful for the cow
