Great encouragement on breeding Medaka. i acquired my first two this July, the last two in this county, (in England) and have had a delightful time watching them. I learned a lot by watching Ryo Watanabe's videos in Japan and how the Japanese have enjoyed them in their mini ponds for hundreds of years. Now my female started spawning after a couple of days and I managed to harvest a few batches of her eggs. The male seemed to dance about her once in awhile as I thought he was fertilizing the eggs still stuck to her. I am now just at two weeks since the first spawn. I hope what I see are little eyes inside the eggs. I had one shocking experience when one later batch that I put in a separate 4 litre jar disappeared the next morning. I had left them hanging on some Elodea plant. Completely gone!! I searched with light, no sign of eggs and then discovered a young blood worm, not totally red yet, that must have snuck in when I added some water from my rain barrel outside. It was quite small itself but I am sure it ate the eggs!! I fed him to one of the parents as he was still small enough for their small mouths. Blood worms are a larvae of some flying insect. Beware of them around eggs. The last unfortunate thing that happened two days ago was I came down and my male was dead! Why? I can only surmise. So sad, now I must find another mate and may have to pay a lot to have one shipped from some other place in England as I see there are some. Two aquarium shops said with the pandemic it is hard to get their shipments by air from the countries they buy them and to keep them at a reasonable price. Just to say I have found these little fish have given me some other interest during this strange time in our world. Who would have thought a little fish could do this for an elderly widow! I don't feel elderly, though!!
If you go on eBay and search “medaka_uk” or “medaka eggs” you’ll be able to buy batches of fertilised eggs like I just have, cheers from England too :)
Great video!! I also keep Medaka as I live in Japan!! There are readily available and fairly cheap for most variety!! Really excited more people in the states are keeping these great little fish!
Thank you so much. I have two baby Medaka and now I’m setting up a breeding tank for their parents. Too hot outdoors in FL so moved them indoors where it’s about 80 deg F. Wish me. luck. Love my Medaka.
Gotta ❤ medakas 😁 Super hardy and low maintenance. I enjoyed this video. Thank you. Hornwort is a great alternative for outdoor mini tubs or ponds to lay eggs on. 👍
I used this method with my summer tubs. I pulled moss 3 times during the first 6 weeks or so. When I broke down the tub a couple of weeks ago, I ended up with 150 fry. I had higher fry survival rates once the water went green. I plan to do some selective breeding over the winter and early spring. The fish all look good, but they're not breeding true. My hope is to improve that over the winter and spring, to get a jump on next year's outdoor season.
Great info on breeding these guys! I just bought a group of orange from you on EBay (under my hub Scott's account). Couldn't find any locally--they're really popular now! Btw, I've known Cory for years through the local fish club, and Aquarium Co Op is just a few miles away from me. It's been fun to watch his store and channel take off!
Thank you! I also enjoyed watching Cory's channel evolve, I was a sub from the beginning with the daily doses. I wish I was close to the Co Op, they have so many fish I want, especially those guppies from Vienna!
I’m hoping to get a breeding group of 6-12, I’ll keep and breed them outside all year round. Winter will do the culling for me, all I have to do is add some new genes every so often and I’ll have very hardy medaka. They are hardy because there is a high cull rate if you allow them to overwinter. If people start inbreeding them in warmer water, they will become noticeably weaker.
I just started breeding these guys and got my first hatch, I moved the eggs to a big glass vase with plants and a air stone on low with some methlyane blue, I was having a lot of fungus on the eggs before. Did you have issues with fungus?
I do just got em working on getting more wi have better prices and deals Cause it’s bullshit these are so expensive and I believe everyone should have em available
@@WorldAquariumSingapore I’m in America bro paid about 100 for 20 taxes and all and to add on something I forgot I’m probably gonna drop another 100 because I want strong genetics fish are to weak these days
Do you notice if the shrimp will prey on the rice fish eggs??? I have a group of 5 younger orange medaka rice fish in a 5 gallon growing out but I notice one of the females has been having like 2-3 eggs (nothing big) hanging from the under fin so I just threw a small breeder mop in the tank just to see if I can get a few eggs. I checked today got 4 eggs total out of the mop but I’m wondering if the cherries I have in there will eat them cuz I’ve noticed them in the mop a few different times...?!?!
Do the snails eat healthy eggs? Just wondering how important it is to remove snails, cause I’m not sure if that’s possible in my tanks 😂 I just have ramshorns and bladder snails.
Thank you! Here's the link for the racks I use, I just put some wood stained with waterproof stain to evenly distribute the weight. www.walmart.com/ip/Edsal-77-W-x-24-D-x-72-H-Steel-Welded-Storage-Rack-Black/21685759?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228016992894&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=40873631552&wl4=aud-430887228898:pla-78766299272&wl5=9003674&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=21685759&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYL3BRDVARIsAF9E4GfSNWA1PnU9NVawSV0iOFZ64rsYOk18PpIv0Zt2xHwNgafc8LsumtUaAjYHEALw_wcB
Awesome fish room! I'm very interested in getting some medaka rice fish, may I ask what's the best way to acclimate them when I got them from mail? (never ordered fish online) and how often you do water change for them? Will 50% water change every few days be good for them? thank you very much.

@@Tristan2681 im late, but i started my youkihi group in a summer tub a few months back with a ratio of 2:3 males to females. I now have hundreds and i have to keep on giving them away to my lfs.
@@fishboy1415 I wanna get some orange rice fish to breed in a nano scape but I dont wanna put moss because it grows so wildly. How many do you think fit in a 8-10gal? Also are the female orange rice fish whitish and the males a deep orange?
Fish Boy I don’t have any moss in the tank but if I add something like guppy grass or floating plants would they choose plants near the surface or the plants in the bottom of the tank?
