@@ninagalvani1007 I even tried it a second time and it happened again. Only this time it was 23 babies but the mom died so I had to donate them to my local pet store.
This is a wonderful video and as a pet mouse breeder I really appreciate that you follow the same ethical standards for your feeder mice as a pet breeder should. Reptiles have to eat and seeing a push for more responsible, ethical feeder breeding over general feeder practices like back-to-back litters, extremely small enclosures, no enrichment, etc. is wonderful. Thank you.
@@gusherboi4537 Wow. You actually got offended on someone else's behalf, despite the fact that she liked the comment herself. You'll melt soon, like all snowflakes.
Josser: isn't she the cutest? She: does this mean you won't make me reptile food? Josser: ... She: ... Josser: Sorry? In all seriousness, I see the great amount of respect and care you give to these mice, and also understand that you have them for a reason. Thank you for this video, I definitely think it'll help a lot of people, and save them a lot of time and money from trial and error, including me.
I thought it was funny when you said, the female mouse wasn't comfortable, lol. I had a flashback to your video of knocking a mouse out and breaking its neck with tongs.
Could you maybe do a video about a correct heating setup? I find it very difficult to get a good tutorial about how the mats and lamps are best placed, wired with the thermosthat etc and I always have a mess with the cables. Especially getting the thermosthat into the enclosure (sliding doors) and to stay there.
Nazareth I own a couple of different species and although most of them do not require lighting I find that my boa for example does seem to enjoy the uvb I provided her, before she was hiding all day and now she comes out between 12 and 5 pm to bask ^^
A person i used to be friends with own 3 girl mouse lol when it came to them being in heat the damn girl mouse would try humping the other girl and my friend would yell HEY stop and they would stop their shit she train them too XD lmao and if they would fight over a toy not like in fighting but trying to take the toy away she would get mad at them and take it away so they can behave
If you have time to for your mice, an easy toy for enrichment is cutting a toilet paper tube up into rings and making a ball out of the rings. You can fill it with food or treats or vegetables, they have to roll it and chew it to get the food out, they love to play with the rings after they destroy it too. 💚 lovely set up.
i know this video is from 2019 but for anyone interested in mice as pets this is Not how you care for them this is like absolutely bare minimum for mice and it's a pretty sad life. But since they're feeders, it's not as big of a deal (and proper pet sort of care would make it hard to even get the babies outta the bin haha). If you have them as pets please do good research-- best thing for them to start is a 40 gallon tub; check out Emiology for pet mice and rats!
Yessss hemp bedding is the absolute best! Especially if you have male mice. Before I used hemp I used wood shavings or paper bedding, the boys were so stinky and I had to clean so much more often.
I realize this is a basic "how to breed video" but what about the whole picture? I recently bought mice to breed....I have 1 male and two females per bin, (2 bins, & 2 empty bins) I started so my BP would have food as I am in a rural area, (or I would have researched more prior to starting) Since no one has feeders around here, I decided to try and sell some once I have thriving colonies.( although, Where I live people's pets are full grown adults, so a lot of people need the larger mice, rats, jumbo rats and rabbits even) Question: To separate males from females after impregnation do they get their own bin? If I keep segregated tubs for males and female, will the males fight? Keep males solo? or simply keep mostly females? I will be euthanizing with CO2 a variety of sizes for frozen. Is this done with mostly males? (Note: I have done my homework on the correct way to euthanize safely and humanely...although I am not looking forward to it!) This may all be common sense to most, but I am just wanting to learn and do things correctly so I don't over look something ( for the sake of the animals as well as myself). This is what snakes eat, and supply is limited in my area, so it is what it is.... plus I may just save or even recoup a few dollars.
I would recommend paper or Aspen bedding, I don't know much about that hemp bedding, but if it has a scent (like eucalyptus) it shouldn't be used, I also don't know anything about the food she used, but I would recommend Oxbow
I'm a first time reptile owner, what is your opinion on taking it to the vet once a year? Is it worth the money? Please take the time to talk about this subject because there is little info and no one wants to talk about it.
@@JossersJungle ah! I wish I could find one like that. They're perfect. I use a large clear tote but I guess it will have to do for now 😃 Thanks so much for the video
Just a note: newspaper ink is toxic over time so maybe use some hay instead? You can get it at pet stores in overpriced little bags or probably get a small bale of it for much cheaper at a feed store... or you could just collect some grass from a spot where you know pesticides haven't been used for free. It'll dry naturally and the mice will happily use it as it's often what they use in the wild! I couldn't feed the cute little pirate mouse at the start of the video. 😅❤❤❤
I need this video to train my cat to be a better mouser. I'm teaching him to catch mice. This is what I need him to do. I have real mice at my house and he catches them quite well but I need him to be better. I want him to take his training more seriously.
No, it's way too dusty. It will give them a respiratory infection. Carefresh paper bedding is amazing but it can be pretty pricy if you have a lot of mice.
Hi, thanks for sharing this information! I have bought a pet mouse and discovered she is pregnant, due this week. We have her set up now, and she is happily nesting. What is the red plastic cover you showed? It would be helpful in order to see her and not disturb her too much. Thanks in advance!
I 've seen so many videos in which the mouse person recommends not breeding mice unless you know what you're doing or are an expert. Hogwash, I had mice when I was younger and bred them with no problems. I just let them go to it and let nature do what it's suppose to do. Yes, they do multiply but if you're ok with that, then what's the problem. There are many, many people when are looking for mice, as pets and as feeders. I used to give mine away to other mouse people or reptile owners...no worries. Nice video and great attitude.
That's because the mouse person cared about the mice's well being. They didn't mean you *can* not, but that you *should* not. It's easy to breed most animals, including humans. Otherwise life would have died out long ago. If you just supply food and keep the two genders together, most animals will reproduce fine. You'll lose a few to difficult births, parents eating the babies or just killing them outright, mom's dying early from overexertion, one gender killing the other due to different opinions in when to mate etc. and what doesn't kill them outright might still make them suffer. But, they will - indeed - reproduce. Such is life. A lot of reptile owners breed their own mice specifically so they don't grow up in miserable conditions, however, which is a great thing to see. This is a good enough set-up, _great_ for a feeder tank - too few houses and not enough space if it were a pet cage. Although I wouldn't keep more than two females per male and cage. Sometimes females get territorial about their young (mostly if the females are unrelated). With lab cages (like the one here) the lack of space for all of them (mouse females can think ahead) could make the mice cannibalize their young, or even attack other females to make room. They could also do this if the food supply seems scarce at any time. Just a few things to keep in mind, should anyone read this while setting up their breeding. I'm a lifelong pet breeder, but still no expert. Even (or, especially rather) scientists are still trying to optimize breeding.
That was the reason I couldn't get a snake for soooo long...I couldn't imagine feeding them live mice. I didn't know it was normal to feed them frozen thawed mice... Now I have three snakes. But wouldn't you know the first snake I got that has to eat mice...wouldn't eat and I had to feed him live...grrr He's back on f/t now but that's life for ya...I only had to feed him two live mice and now he's eating like he should be... But now I'm wondering if I should just breed my own mice...how things change...
Would this be ok to breed for ferrets I’m planning on getting ferrets soon and I’m look at the best options for food I’m thinking breeding my own mice/ rats would be a solution I’ve never owned an animal that eat mice before I didn’t realise how expensive they are
Hi Josser! I got my first snake today he is a ball python named Bhageera. A coral glow. He's so so so amazing and I can't thank you enough for teaching me so much about these beautiful animals ❤
My boyfriend cleans at an office building and brings me the empty small cube tissue boxes, doubles as a hide and chew toy replaced once a week at clean out or sooner if they completely destroy it. Some have a thin sheet of plastic where the tissues come out but it's easy and recommended to remove it.
have you had issues with females fighting? adter all 5 got pregnant i reintroduced after pups were weaned and the moment all 5 females we're back with the same male again they tried to kill each other
Has anyone found a decently priced online retailer to get a cage similar to the one used in the video? I found one company but they charge separately for the tubs and the lids but do not offer a combo price. to get 5 good size tubs and the lids is like $350 american and with their largest size which would be best you have to order in packs of 5
You never know what you're mice will like better for hides you might get mice that appreciate literal garbage more than something you spent 20 bucks on. So I recommend buying whatever's cheap, and/or cardboard boxes. I've seen people use Dollar tree hard plastic bowls, and then they cut a door out of it. Those should be more reusable.
Hei there! I love your channel! I myself keep mice as pets since years and I agree with most of the things you said! But whilst I see that you breed mice for your snakes I think it would be a good idea to say that that bigger enclosures would be better for mice. Usually for about 4 pet mice a good sized enclosure would be at least 50cmx100cmx50cm. And it would offer lots of hides and entertainment, since mice are curious little animals that like to explore, climb and hide. I see that this is not always possible in breeding but for keeping pet mice it should be. (You can get used enclosures of that size for quite a good prize on ebay and it is easy to build hides yourself...) I do not judge you or other breeders but it would be good to explain these things to people who want to keep mice as pets. Also I would not advice people to breed mice if they do not feed them off. You can easily forget a male with some females (since sexing is quite difficult when they are young) and end up with more babies than you can care for. That said it is nice to see a video about pet mice and one can clearly see that you care for them a lot! ;)
Once the female is pregnant, do you take her away from the box that contains the other females? Does she need her own box to give birth in now that she’s pregnant? I think that’s the only question I didn’t get answered! I know we have a box of females and one male. Once one of them or more, is pregnant, what do we do so they can get ready for birth
im trying to put together a pet mouse colony:) i really want my VERY well tempered male and my slightly more skittish (but absolutely beautiful) female to breed. i feel like the temperaments would be really great, and they would also be a very diverse group of babies. my male is a black and white pied, and his fur is suuuuper soft and long. he has black eyes. my female is a fawn color with short fur and ruby eyes. i’ve been doing research for forever and i think i’m finally ready!!
@@earlydoc6122 coming back four years later to update! my male mouse ended up being infertile hahahaha. they both passed over the rainbow bridge so long ago now and they ended up being my last mice for awhile. but i'm back now to say that i am officially breeding show type mice this year! personally i am much more thorough with my mice's enclosures than this video because my mice are SO much less stressed, better tempered, and healthier when they are provided with ample space, tons of clutter, different substrates, sprays, forage, and things that stimulate their brains. also suitable wheels & substrates are important too which i notice are a big issue in the mouse breeding community also. i'm also more thorough in my entire process because i am a show type breeder so i have way less litters than most breeders do. i focus more on passion than profit because i love my animals :)
Just a lilttle learner, I know the struggle, in gnaw the g is silent so it is naw!!! Thanks for the the videos imma watch a few more and might have a request for ya! Thanks
I have a quick question. If you don’t house more than one male with females. Where do the rest of the males go. Do you house each male individually Or do they get housed together? are they sold and fed off before they get old enough to fight?
I have a question... one of my females just had babies today.. can i remove her babies and place them with my other two mother mouses? I only want to because the new mother has killed one of the other mothers babies for absolutely no reason. I dont want her babies killed because shes a psycho
I’ve been trying to find out if you need to separate males from females before they give birth? Can they stay housed together I only have one male and one female atm. I want to raise pinkies as feeders for our 2 small king snakes. I’m also wondering if I should remove babies right after birth or wait a day or two I wonder which is better for female I want to spare her as little stress and grief as possible
Just found your page I’m learning how to breed mine now and where did you get that cage from it’s nice and it’s hold everything together I rather have that then a tank
Very interesting with everything..I have always loved all the animals especially the cats dogs rabbits and also the mice with angels too..if I had a son or a daughter that loves mice as pets
Tak for din fine video. Kan du dele enten navn eller link til foderet? Jeg har prøvet at Sodicuffs, men det er nok ikke stavet korrekt. Alternativt hvor køber du det? På forhånd tak :)
@@JossersJungle I left him in and the babies are here. So far he seems to be protecting her and them but kind of wish I had as don't want loads more haha.
Excellent! New subscriber here! I cant get a snake until I graduate University but I look forward to the future everyday!! Planning to be as self sustaining as possible too. Is it cheaper to raise a colony of mice for your snake? Of course I will probably need to supplement the diet at first. Is it cheaper to just buy frozen mice or buy food for mice?
Hello, im a rat and mice breeder and wanted to let know in the comments to other breeders to avoid at all cost the aspen that petsmart sells, their own brand (great choice). It killed a lot of my rats and i was able to contact other professional breeders and they confirmed that their house brand aspen is fatal for rats.
