All references to “mild” is only a descriptor of flavor. No cigar should be considered to present a reduced risk of harm compared to other cigars.
Do you have some precious smokes that are dried out? Let Al Remp, Thompson Cigar cigar expert, show you how to bring them back!

I use a shot glass of bourbon and keep humidity between 65 and 70. I place the dry ones on bottom tray (dark and cooler). After 2 shot glasses of bourbon has evaporated enjoy your cigars and a wonderful aroma. O maybe worth mentioning my humidor only holds 200 cigars.

Thompsons is local to me in Tampa FL. When I would into their showroom their cigars are out in the open and they do not use any humidor. It's possible the whole building is set to a certain temp... But ive seen high dollar premium cigars with dried out cracked wrappers. I never purchased cigars from them and never will until they setup a proper humidor. Its sad because they have a massive building with lots of cigars.

do you need to place cigars with wrappers on in a humidor
@Daniel-nv8nm
@Daniel-nv8nm 10 лет назад
Are you referring to the cellophane wrappers that most cigars are slipped into these days? The answer to that is yes--the cellophane will slow down the drying a but, but it will not stop it. BTW, all cigars have 'wrappers,' the outermost layer of tobacco on the cigar is called the cigar's wrapper.
@sluggotg
@sluggotg 9 лет назад
I assume you mean the Cellophane. If they came with Cellophane I leave it on. The reason I do this is because it protects the outer layer of tobacco, (The Wrapper), from abrading and cracking. Some Humidors have Drawers and shelves in them. When you are looking for a good smoke, you tend to shift the cigars around a bit. (Opening and closing the drawers and moving the shelves in and out). The wrapper helps them keep from rolling around and provide excellent abrasion protection. Many of my Highest end Cigars do not come with Cellophane wrappers. (I think it is a protest thing... "We will not soil our masterpiece with Cello".. But I wish they would just provide them with Cello. (Many of my Pedron's come with no Cello, same with My Liga Provada T52's.. But all my Opus X's have cello!). Sluggo

So why can't you just lay it back in your humidor with other cigars and keep it a inch or two away from other cigars?
@reily6488

@lNORTHl They can be too moist. They taste pretty bitter, and go out very easily. Keep your humi between 65-70%. I prefer the lower end of that spectrum.

Me also I've went to 55% on some older cigars then brought them up to 60% to burn.

Yes and it will keep going out. Just leave it out for a day in cool place like 70 to 75 degrees. If that don't work put it in the freezer over night.

I heard the taste gets ruined if they have dried out ... regardless of being rehydrated? True?

I think there is "point of no return" when a cigar is dried for too long and starts to degrade. But if they just got dried out sitting in your kitchen for a couple weeks it's reasonable that they should be able to be revived.

Danil, Holy Crap nice find!!! I hope you still have them. Certainly get a mid quality humidor and some calibrated hydrometers, (or the kind that teach you how to calibrate them). Get some Gel Jars and some Bodiva Packs. Initially put them in the humidor and start at the lower end of the humidity spectrum. (65% to 74% is the broad spectrum, start in the low 60s). Keep them in the low 60's for a several weeks then bump them to 72% for several weeks. Make sure you buy a separate humidor and keep it at 65%. When you are ready to try one of these, put it in the 65% for 4 or 5 day, then smoke it. In general, the 70-74% humidity range is perfect for long term storage. For Smoking.. 65% seems to be much better. Another way to do this is pull your Stogies out of the 72% humidor, set them on the counter and let them dry for a few hours before smoking. The Cigars you found could be worth a lot of money. Rubes like me will pay great prices to smoke a cigar that is almost 100 years old. People with real money will pay mega bucks. If nothing else contact some of the big cigar dealerships like Cigar.com and see if you can make a deal. Those cigars my just come back after some time cooking in the humidor and taste really cool! Good Luck! Sluggo

I was wondering if you (or anyone reading this) may have gotten what you thought the cigars were worth. Or if you researched anywhere in particular that gave you an estimate on yours that seemed accurate that you may share. I have come across a box of cigars from the 20's and not sure of estimated value as I can find nothing on internet. Just ran across this site and I hope you are still on here and able to respond with any help. Thank you!

Patience is what's missing here. Simply place your now No. 2 pencil back in a properly humid humidor and flip once a week. I learned as a teen, when my well intentioned but ignorant Dad would buy me cigars too far before X-Mas. Faster methods might be as mentioned by NeptuneCigar, but you do risk swelling - thus wrapper crackage. For those of us with more time to spend, but less resources than someone in Al's position has - give it a month.

Cigars pick up flavors just like wine, this is why distilled water is used for humidification, This would probably imbue raw potato notes in your cigars.

How long does this insane embargo have to last? We have gone decades without any political drama with our Cuban friends. In fact, we have been at war with the world ever since, yet its still illegal to buy a true Cuban cigar? How many congressmen have and smoke cubans while walking around Washington D.C.
@Daniel-nv8nm
@Daniel-nv8nm 10 лет назад
Mr. Smith, not to mention that President Obama's close friends like to visit Cuba. It would be nice if the embargo were lifted. That would help the Cuban people not to mention make our hobby better. I wonder though, since there are now a lot more cigar smokers, would Cuba be able to keep up with the demand without sacrificing quality? In any event, Fidel is dead, let's move on and get some good Cubans here without having to rely on black market sources who are charging us exorbitant prices!

I have a friend from Cuba who lives in Miami. He told me he finds way better cigars in the US then the Cuban brands he smoked when he lived in Cuba.. I myself have had Cuban cigars. The type I bought was box of Fonseca Habana's 4 1/2 cadets. Still have a few tho they where ok but prefer Dominicans myself. But that's just me. Everyone's opinions vary.
@charleskirkland8133
@charleskirkland8133 10 лет назад
John O'Neill I agree with you on the Dominicans John. I think that part of the whole *_Cuban cigar mystic_* is just that they are harder to get in the USA so people want them more. It's like a beer that is not sold in my state, I will have it when I visit another state that does sell and think it's wonderful. But when it starts becoming readily available in my state, that mystic is gone and it's just another beer. Truth be told I've have good Cuban cigars and I've had really bad Cuban cigars, more on the so-so side than anything--except for that mystic of it being something that is hard to get and therefore somehow better.

@sechiatano1973 9 лет назад
John O'Neill . I have smoked a Cuban Cohiba like 5 months ago. I found it kind of week and 3 months ago I got a Cohiba just down the street and that stick smoked a lot more better then the Cuban cigar.
@Johnnyo2408
@Johnnyo2408 9 лет назад
Joe A That's what I'm saying.. Alot of the cigars I smoke now so far are better then any real Cubans I have had in the past. But then again the ones I have tried where not the best kinds.

Today, Jan 7 2024, as I watch this....this man is wrong. Cigars can be saved. They may look ugly after some rpairs and rehydrating. But they can be smoked and enjoyed fully.

JUST CUT UP HALF INCH WIDE POTATO COINS/DISCS AND KEEP IN BOX. DON'T LET CIGARS TOUCH THEM, CHANGE TATERS AFTER EVERY TWO DAYS OR SO. GUARANTEED FIX IN FEW DAYS. TRY IT ":^) Uuuuur Welcome, Chaps!!
