Acid Start Up for White & Colored Plaster Pools Step by Step - Part one of two: • Acid Start Up for Whit...
In this video I bring up the pool from zero Alkalinity and a pH under 6.0 up to safe levels to start the pool pump and finish the start up process.
The problem is that there is no way to know where the pH is and how low the Alkalinity is as I bring things back up to safe levels. As I mention you can use thepoolcalculator.com but you are entering "start" numbers that are only guesses. For example you can enter 5.3 as the pH but it could be 5.5.
The Taylor Base Demand is also not going to help as it is too far down to register an accurate reading. In this pool it took 25 drops of base demand to get it to 7.2. The chart only goes to 10 drops.
So the best thing to do is use a combination of Soda Ash and Borax. 1.4 oz of Soda Ash will raise the Alkalinity by 1 ppm and of course raise the pH at the same time. So I add 5 lbs of Soda Ash to start bringing the pH and Alkalinity up. I then switch over to Borax which will raise the pH and keep the Alkalinity low.
So the Soda Ash raised the pH in this pool and the Alkalinity to 50-60 ppm. It was pretty close to 60 ppm with the final drop. Both the pH and Alkalinity will contin ue to rise daily in a new plaster pool so check it daily for the first week and add acid to bring both the pH and Alkalinity back down.
New plaster has a very high acid demand -- usually for the first 6 months. Then it tapers off a bit.
Not a very difficult process. If you go to high on the pH you can always lower it the next day by adding some acid. As long as you get the pool running right away the plaster will be fine. The key is to get the system started as soon as you can after the Acid Start up has finished.
