Its true, some cats take a lot longer to warm up to this than others. It is important to make sure your cat's mouth is checked by a competent veterinarian if your cat resists tooth brushing. Resorption lesions are really common in cats, they are similar to cavities in humans, and are very painful. Often if a cat hates having its mouth touched, it is because it hurts, but we can help. Extracting the affected tooth can make a cat much more comfortable and happy to be handled!

Helpful Vancouver Vet I will try this with my kitty Cas...she’s 5 months old!! But does the dental treats help as well?? We bought some...before I learned we can actually brush them with this video!! lol

It looks like our cat, lost her right fang we just had her at the vet, so I don't know how she lost it or it just came out. I checked her other teeth, they look fine but will start this teeth brushing routine..

I had no idea. Is it a product of the diets we have them on and on-diet treats we give them? Wild cats don't get their teeth brushed, so I would just assume it wasn't necessary for them. Maybe wild cats just don't live long enough :(

It might seem silly to some people to brush their cat's teeth, but dental care is so important! My 11 year-old cat just had her top two canines and a bottom premolar removed. She had to go under anesthesia for the procedure, it was stressful for her, and it cost several hundred dollars. I wish I had known how to brush her teeth when she was younger! People with younger cats - squish that cat and brush those teeth!!

We had no idea that you need to brush your cat's teeth. Our cat Orangy got a bad infection, went in to get her tooth pulled and her kidney's failed. She had to be put down the next day. She was only 6. So tragic and so sad. Now we try to brush our cat's teeth every second day, but they hate it. We've bought the enzyme chicken flavoured toothpaste and i give their molars a few swishes of the paste on my fingers. Better than nothing, but I wish I would have known sooner about complication from infected teeth.

lindsaysimplyliving my sister's cat ended up dying from something dental related. they never knew to brush his teeth. he stopped eating one day so they took him to the vet, who said he couldn't eat because his teeth were so fucked up. they had to put him under anesthesia and extracted half of his teeth at once. but he never really recovered from that surgery, so they had to put him down, it was so sad. you bet your ass the day I heard he was sick, I went out and bought toothbrush kits for my cats. they are adults already so it's hard to get them to cooperate but they've gotten better over time. it does help to SQUISH THAT CAT like he says so they back up against your body/can't escape out of your arms.

It's like a novel..."How to Brush Your Cat's Teeth...A Fantasy!" I know it's important to start when your cat is a kitten. It's the key to all cat care. Not everyone is lucky enough to have gotten their cats when they were kittens, though. I got my Reny when he was a kitten, got him used to having his claws trimmed, and he loves being brushed, but I never even thought about brushing his teeth. Thankfully, at age 14+, his teeth are still sound and strong.

Another motivation to start brushing your cat's teeth early is the savings. We have two cats that weren't acclimated to it while kittens and its pretty hard to brush their teeth ourselves. As such, one of them is at the vet this morning for an annual $250 cleaning...it adds up ;) Great video as always!

Both of my cats, Pumpkin and Tux, are brushed daily. At the end of the brushing session they each get a dental treat :) They are both very good during their brushing.

thank you for video - 2 of my cats (adults) have gum problems and Vet recommended brushing with pet toothpaste and pet toothbrush - I was not getting very good responses so looked at RU-vid and found this helpful video! I have just tried a very short time just lightly massaging (with my finger) the gums around the back teeth and I shall persevere as so far the cats have allowed me to do this!! I shall introduce just the toothpaste on my finger eventually (not using the brush) so am feeling more hopeful!

Great video and helpful tips. I got 2 cats both 11 months old and been brushing their teeth for 2 months after watching your video and following the advice. Initially they didn’t like it but now accept as regular routine. They used to have stench kitty mouth breath and now their mouths smell fresh. Thanks

It's so great that you make these videos, they're so clear and soothing to watch but also help to raise awareness on pet care. So many dog/cat owners aren't even aware that they should be brushing their pet's teeth and it's so sad to see a cat come in and have half of its teeth extracted when that could be so easily avoided with just a better awareness. :( Some studies have also suggested that cats with dental disease may be at increased risk of kidney disease later in life, so all the more reason for simple practices like this to be incorporated early on wherever it is possible. Thank you for helping to spread this message!

Thank you for demonstrating this as i needed it on my former cat but did not understand how to shape the behavior. But i always was allowing him to mouth my fingers with his teeth gently so i could have armed my self with a soft baby brush and some of that enzymatic tooth paste and given him a good brushing now and then, because he was ok with the handling. When he got two hard with the nibbles, i used to gently move a finger toward the back of his throat and he let go right away, but it made us both respect the prerogatives of each, and we were both very hands on with the other.
