How to build a 3 string cigar box guitar - How to make a scarf joint jig.
I show how to make an easy scarf joint jig, for a slanted head stock on a cigar box guitar.
Plus a cool little jam at the end of the video.

Hey Michael! Thanks for the video. I've been cutting these by hand, and with maple, it has been quite a task. I'm making this jig and leaving my scarf cut miter box alone. Your directions are clear. Your humor is awesome, and your CBGs are sweet!

Michael, isn't that a six inch head that you made? Not a 4 inch head. If you mark it four inches you should get a 4" head. Am I missing something? You said you liked a 4" head stock. Don't you have to cut some of that head stock off now? Thanks.
@clemmcguinness1087
@clemmcguinness1087 4 года назад
Oh and another thought, it gets a bit "slidey", what about a bit of blue tape on the headstock face to keep things lined up while the glue sets? I'll try it and send you another message ...

To keep the scarf joints from slipping when gluing, you should sink a couple of heavy staples or wire brads into the neck first. Cut them off with nippers so that a small amount of the staples or brads stick out. Then glue the headstock parts and clamp them together. No sliding will occur. Also some people sprinkle some grains of salt in the glue to create grit. This also works for gluing fretboards and getting them properly positioned and not slipping and sliding around when clamping.
@SouthernFireGuitars
@SouthernFireGuitars 4 года назад
There are many ways of doing it I'm sure, but I don't think I will be sprinkling salt under my fret boards. :)

I just watched this video today, went to Home Depot and got the wood I needed and built me a jig like this. Then I cut my first ever legit 15 degree scarf joint. It does look a little different from yours, but that’s got some to do with the shape/configuration of my saw. I didn’t put the screws in the jig. I can send you pics over on Facebook, if you want.

Dude. I feel so dumb. The "flip it over and make a second cut, then cut it square" is both obvious and yet amazingly brilliant. I wish I'd thought of it instead of killing myself to make a semi-functional jig for my cheap-ass bandsaw...

Hey bud…… I made your jig and wow, that makes it so easy! Thanks!!! I built 2 necks with them and they look great. The problem is …… I cut the dang neck too short overall. I have a 25 scale template from CB Gitty and when I put the neck into the cigar box, the fret board is too long. I then measured my neck from the tail of the neck to the end of the scarf joint (entire length of the neck and it’s only 28 inches. Ugh! I thought I had done 36”. My question is what length should the neck be before cutting the scarf joints? 36? The length of the cigar box is 8.5”. I am so bummed. I was so proud that I did it AND then did it wrong. It is my first build. I have been watching all your videos. Not close enough I guess. Ha! You explain things so well. I would really appreciate your help my friend. Thanks again!!!!
