How to build a 4" stainless steel snorkel pie-cut / lobster back - Timelapse

A time lapse video on how I made a 4"stainless steel snorkel using the pie-cut tube method.
This process is mainly used in the motorsport industry for custom exhausts and the like giving you the option to customize the shape and radius with no limitations that you would get using mandrel bent tube.
Fully TIG welded and powder coated satin black. Did not see the need to purge my welds.
I used a Kemppi MasterTIG MLS 2300 ACDC TIG welder with finger amp controls.
Some people like it, some don't, but I couldn't care less about the haters. It was a pleasure to build and i'm happy with how it turned out.
No, i will not make you one.
Enjoy.

At 100 bucks an hour that’s a 3 grand snorkel
@Jawscatz
@Jawscatz 4 года назад
And then in the end it's not as smooth looking as using mandrel bends and it got painted/coated flat black! Wtf.

The sugaring from the back has ruined the stainless and will eventually rust from the back thats why when u make a hot side for turbos,headers,or a cold side from staimless(which i never make mine out of stainless for weight reasons always aluminum)its always back purged thats the only reason people will pay more money for my products or other people products that back purge rather than some chinese crap thats not back purged for half the price. It just makes a pure and strong weld thats porosity free
@emertwall9427
@emertwall9427 5 лет назад
But might i add if u did back purge this would be a top notch product good welding sir
@tigertim20
@tigertim20 5 лет назад
How did you manage to get no sugaring on the inside when you werent back purging? - do you just have a fine tune on your Tig for welding that wall thickness without burning right through, or was there another trick I couldnt see? - I assume it was reasonably thick - 1.6 or 2mm?. Really liked the video - you just earned a new subscriber, great job!

Tube is 1.6mm 316. Didnt see the need to purge building this, and all the extra effort involved in doing so. Thanks for your sub!

how did you manage not to Fk-up the internal wall on the welds without back-purge? Is this AISI 304 or 316? Normally the inside, if exposed to the atmosphere, will be messy "suggary", where a crack will start. Not sure if was the camera that did not show clearly or it is really clean. Any hint on the settings or maybe you just used excess argon... ?

I don't get people liking the lobster back pattern look. It's ugly it makes it look like it's a backyard job. No offence to the fabricator he's done a professional job. Being a boilermaker myself I've had to do a lot of radial development the old school way no computer or apps. To me personally when it's polished and looks seamless. I look for where the welds were hiding your bends that's hard

Love this!!!! But me I don’t like the “Chrome” look but something about TIG Welding and the shaping and weld spots on there with the Stainless Steel makes me happy so i would of personally kept it raw! But I see you powder coated it 🤘🏽 great work!
@shannonsengineering

Thanks mate, i did keep it raw for a while but quickly oxidized due to coastal address and not pasivating the welds.

sorry mate. Used a vertical metal cutting bandsaw, cut at 85.5deg both ends giving an 9deg wedge/pie cut. To make a 90deg lobster back elbow, you need 9x 9deg pie cuts and 2x (4.5 one end 90deg the other) end pieces. Hope that makes sense.

@@shannonsengineering next time heat the welds to a blueish color and while hot spray them with transmission fluid wait for them to cool and polish out the pipe .. you can leave them outside forever and theyll never rust.. its what we used to do when making chimney extension pipes on restaurants to create more up draft on wood fired ovens.. almost 20 yrs later and still not even a spec of rust on the ones i put up down town ... ive done this with several exhausts ive built after mig welding them on my toys and even our winter salt doesnt phase it .. i just believe in being able to see my work especially after hours and hours put into 1 project ... i know an offroad vehicle doesnt have a need to be pretty but that was a beautiful snorkel..

Why do 4x4 have there intake facing backwards ? This is the most ineffective way as the air passes over the end it causes a vacuum the faster you go the more inefficient it is much better to turn it around and face the direction of travel
@shannonsengineering
@shannonsengineering 4 года назад
I personally don't think it makes any difference what way it faces. Its not a race car. In the vehicles i have owned, i have never felt any performance differences having it backwards not that i drive a diesel 4wd to go fast anyway.
