No way! What a suprise to see the Cape Farewell predatory fence around the bird's sanctuary. Believe it or not. I was one of the two guys who where hanging on the ropes of the side of the cliff and put up that part of the fence. And the one at the other end. It was probably the best 'office' I've ever had. Watching seals playing bellow. And no I didn't get a danger pay for that one. In fact I quit right after as it was a shi*t pay 😀
Looks good but may have been more practical in a dark colour. I am a fan of black rough sawn timber fences with a narrow paling, as they recess back in the landscape. I am old school and timber fences can take a lot longer to build but if well done last decades. Guess you could spray paint in the future
Hi Scott, good to have the regular videos back after the Xmas break. Would you be able to do a channel update? As in, are you looking to take on new projects for other people in the future or are you going to stick to your idea of building something on each continent? Love the videos and always look out for them every Friday here in the UK
Not sure how much sun you get there, I've replaced fences over here in Australia with white colourbond and it's killed alot of plants along the fencline from the heat reflection. Be interested to see how it goes! You've done a good job though, even with all the accidental plan casualties 🤣
Nice fence Scott, you quickly got your head round the problems. You didn’t savage to many of the plants and Jess was quite forgiving. Thanks for the latest exciting episode.👍👍
Metal fences are great! They tend to last much longer than wood as well. But be careful to prune anything that grows through the slats. While a wood slab can be swapped fairly easily, metal bends and can distort an entire section.
I think a wooden close board fence would have looked so much nicer and blended better with the surrounding. I have always thought the steps in the fence are not the prettiest to look at whereas a close board fence you can run a string line, but each to their own. Great job as always and I'm glad you like it 👍
Tidy job. Not sure I'm totally convinced about the durability of that system re wind loads etc. I see it has gaps in the palings and you did a good job of the anchor bolts. Then again, it's awesome to see something more aesthetically pleasing than the awful bog standard NZ H3 close-board boundary fence 😂

i never understood this NZ/AUS obsession with "digging out concrete". Yeah, sure, your tough, we all know that... But a perfectly good footing, already in the ground is a very cost effective and practical solution. Glad Scott got the memo.
Was also wondering this. He seems to get along with his neighbors and there already seems to be existing natural privacy shrubs/trees. Looks great but wonder what the need was.

You guys are so lucky having peaches and plums. When I was a kid (~60 years ago...) I used to be able to eat lovely plums from the tree in my garden. These days, Sydney is infested with fruit flys and the days of simply having backyard fruit trees are gone 😔 (Well done on keeping these pests out of your part of the world)
New Zealand's phenomenal environment flexing in the video - plants, fruits, flowers of all kinds, bursting out all over. No need for irrigation, seldom a need for a greenhouse. Want to grow something? It usually will in New Zealand.
You wouldn't say that if you ever tried to grow tomatoes along the kapiti north of Wellington. If you grow them outside of a greenhouse, you get a fantastic burst of green vines, but as soon as the fruit starts to set, the plants die from disease. Every single time.
Subscriber here 😅 We bumped into you and Jess at lake Tekapo yesterday and all I said was "scott brown here, how are ya " we were so excited to say hi that we forgot to actually have a proper conversation. We didnt want to disturb you guys since you looks busy filmming. Anyways I wish we had actually stopped to say how much My partner and I love the videos ! Fence is looking great!
Awwh! To ask is to be given. I lamented the lack of Jess and NZ summer visuals and in the very next episode...you provide. It's 0 degrees C here and we just got 3-4 cm of snow through the overnight so it's nice to see the bees and flowers. Golly! My only personal caveat regarding that fence is the plastic film waste. Every single piece seems to come film coated to protect the finish, but by the end... Yes, we try to recycle plastic, but it's the hardest to deal with. Regardless, enjoy the new privacy. And the garden is getting better than ever
The local vandals walked down the street the other day, stealing everyone's gates. But I didn't like to challenge them just in case they took offence😂.
Ideal fence for costal areas over steel. That style with the same look on both sides is often referred to as a Good Neighbor Fence. Probably just needs a wash every year for the sea salt and grime.
Beautiful finished product, and regardless the extra work, that thing will likely last 20 plus years or more, and look like the day it was installed. Good choice.
I was thinking, "Thank goodness Jess is there to protect the plants". You did very well to avoid killing most, and soon that fence will make a lovely back drop for all the plants, flowers and trees. 👏🏼
curious why that threaded rod was spinning in the concrete. did you bend over the end of the rod embedded in the concrete or use j-hooks like in a foundation? j-hooks can be spendy and around here they are too big as required by code for those posts. but in the past i've just bent over the end of the rod. i'd be worried that threaded rod will pull right out, without it having a way to stay captured by the concrete. maybe there are nuts and washers down there?
Scott/Ray, when you get an overheated battery, throw it in the fridge for 10 minutes. I live in QLD Aus so this is a regular occurrence for me 🥵. Works like a charm every time and gets the pack charging straight away when you pull it out of the fridge. You will get strange looks from the missus but she’ll get used to it 😂
I’ve just watched this episode again .. I don’t know that I saw your completed fence.. it looks smart and fits in with your garden !! Loving your garden Jess .😎
its more work - but its a premium effect - and the thousands we throw at houses sometimes, and the little extra you would outlay on this compared to a normal fence makes a massive difference. Does it make the garden $15K better looking come sale time - yes easy - its a lovely fence.
I can see the pros to this sort of fence, but there are downsides, too. A lot more plastic waste, and if that's the only colour it comes in, would need to paint it anyway. For my personal taste, I would paint it a dark green so it's a subtle background & blends into the garden. My nosy self wants to know why you decided to put up such a 'solid' fence. Hopefully it doesn't have anything to do with the neighbours 😆😆
G,day Scotty and Jess from Sydney Australia. Very modernistic powder coated fence. The red Deablo saw blades have really caught my attention with the quality tungsten carbide teeth "a little 'hexy' all the same" Gardening gossip Little glass bottles with lids stored in a wooden rack, another fun way to display and label rare seeds saved from the flowers. Calligraphy to give them a vintage image. 🌺🇦🇺
I’ve enjoyed lurking and watching your content… great stuff & thank you. But now I’m compelled to comment… what on earth is that fence!?! To my eyes it too bright - it’s just way too visible and ruins the lovely natural aesthetic of the garden. And, is there a reason it needs to be so high? Are the neighbors getting a dog? Or worse… children?
12:40 oh wow what a view there.. i'm not sure i've ever noticed a shot from that angle before.. already thought you had a cool place but that cements it
Like the fence. I think it is good to work with a different material from time to time. What material are the screws made of? In the end the master gardener comes in to work on the beauty of the place. The whole place really changed over the years. Not only the house but the garden as well. Looks great.
nice job as usual. i’m just very partial to a beautiful wood look but keeping it up would be hard with a garden that dense. so i understand why you went with the aluminum
I miss sliding fixing points. It looks like all your fixing points are fixed. What about termal expansion of aluminum🤯 Check the thermal expansion coeficient for aluminium, you are going to be surprised
Milwaukee getting a little hot under the collar so Makita comes in to Cool things down! Well done Makita. It could have been a little different and a B!@j@& but that would be tooooo naughty here! 😂🤣
Looks kind of industrial in that wilderness. Not my fence style for that particular garden. But if you like it or needed that way, fine by me. Looking forward for more stuff.
I firmly believe that putting hot /warm batteries on a charger drastically reduces its life. I had several batteries die and about two years ago I told my guys to let batteries cool completely down before charging and have lost a battery since. Just a theory but it seems to hold true in my case.
Well done Scott! Is there a reason the fence can't come pre-assembled in 8x4 panels that you just slot between the fence posts so you save all that time putting all the parts together?
That looks great! Your yard/garden area is really turning into a nice place. It will be a blast once everything gets established. Will be waiting for a video or 3 of you both enjoying all the work thats been done!
Considering how many hoops you need to jump through with the council to update your home - did you not have the same amount of red tape to build a fence? Property lines are taken much more seriously than interior changes at least here in my part of the states.
If its like most of Australia then there is a maximum height and in some estates there are covenants on materials used but if the neighbour is sweet with it then it's all good. Bushfire areas and corner blocks have other rules but generally the only problems will come from a neighbour.
i’ve seen new houses built with a lot less concrete in the the footings than that fence has…I think you ended up with a better install using the concrete…no dogs can dig under it for sure😊
5:18 dude, you should know better than to do this, very dangerous, not worth it, long weldeds gloves, sit on the other side, and move legs out of the way!
Now this is a story all about how Scott Brown's life got flipped, turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there I'll tell you how he got a fence from a company called BelAire
*tip* if battery is overheated and wont take a charge place battery in the charger and both inside the fridge let it sit until you hear the fan start working
