HOW TO BUILD A KEGERATOR WITH A SIMPLE CONVERSION KIT!
Tools You’ll Need
7/8″ Hole Saw
Power Drill
Flathead Screwdriver
Spanner Wrench
Hex Wrench
Measure Your Fridge
The best type of refrigerator to convert is a full size, horizontally split kitchen fridge with a freezer on top. However, you can really convert any type of refrigerator as long as it fits a keg, while leaving 6-8 inches above to fit the coupler. You also need to leave enough room for tapping and untapping your kegs. If you’re limited on space, consider using a low profile keg coupler. A standard US Sankey Keg Coupler is 3 & 3/4″ tall and 7″ wide, where a Low Profile US Sankey Keg Coupler is 2 & 1/8″ tall and 4″ wide, giving you extra clearance in a fridge with limited space.
Beer kegs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so make sure the keg you choose will fit inside your refrigerator. keg sizes
Different brands of beers will require different keg couplers. A US Sankey Keg Coupler will fit 99% of all beers brewed in North America. For more keg coupler size information, check out our keg coupler list: www.kegworks.com/blog/keg-cou...
The Deluxe Kegerator Conversion Kit: www.kegworks.com/kit-deluxe-r...
has all the components you need to get started as well as a beer line cleaning kit, so your DIY kegerator can pour fresh beer every time. If your fridge is limited on space, the Standard Kegerator Conversion Kit - Low Profile US Sankey D System: www.kegworks.com/standard-ref...
...included low profile keg coupler will allow for more clearance.
Drill the Desired Location
Make sure the refrigerator is unplugged. With a power drill and hole saw, drill a 7/8″ hole in the door or sidewall of your refrigerator for the faucet and shank; do not drill into the back wall of the refrigerator. Check the inside of the door to be sure you have clearance for your shank. Also, make sure you have enough distance from the freezer door, so you can open it up without hitting the tap handle. Lastly, be sure to saw all the way through the door and the plastic liner on the
Connecting the Faucet and Shank
Insert the shank through the hole that you just drilled (from the outside) and secure it with a brass flanged lock nut; the black plastic flange goes on the outside to help cover up the hole you made.
Attach the faucet head to the shank and tighten with a spanner wrench.
Connecting the Beer and Air Line
Attach the beer line hex connections to the back of the shank and to the top of the keg coupler.
Attach one end of the air line to the nipple on the coupler and the other on to the regulator.
Tighten the hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver.
Then attach the regulator to your CO2 tank and tighten with a hex wrench.
Please Note: our CO2 tanks ship empty due to federal regulations. You can get them filled at a local welding supply company, or if you live in the Buffalo, NY area, you can get them filled right at The KegWorks Store.
Final Connections and Adjustments
Make sure the faucet and regulator switch are in the “off” position.
Open the CO2 tank and attach your keg coupler.
Adjust your regulator to a range of 10-12 psi.
Then turn it on to allow the flow of CO2 to your keg
DRINK!
Kegerator Conversion Kit Tips:
Draft beer should be stored and dispensed at 36-40 degrees F. Keeping a thermometer inside the fridge is always a good idea.
If your keg has been handled a great deal or has warmed up, it may take several hours to settle down and cool before pouring. So be sure to give your beer time to rest.
Open the beer faucet quickly and fully. Opening the faucet halfway will cause foam. Once you’ve filled the glass, close the faucet quickly.
When pouring, we suggest that you tilt the glass slightly so you can pour it gently down the side of the glass. For more on dispensing, check out our blog post on How to Pour a Perfect Pint.
Keep your beer system clean! We recommend flushing your draft lines with a good rinse every time you change your keg. This is the easiest way to make sure that you’re pouring nothing but crisp, tasty beer. Stock up on beer line cleaning supplies and kits here.

Expect a visit from me in about 2 months. I'm in Lockport and once the garage is built, I have a refrigerator I'm converting over.

Over the years of having tappers I have found keeping the tap inside the refer is the way to go. This doesn't work for some people but it can beww a good option. Especially in warmer areas..a tapper spout is a very welcoming place for fruit flies. If the tap head is in the refer..this won't happen. I always just used a length of 4x4 that sits on top of the half barrel...with the shank going thru the center of the block of wood. If you're using smaller size kegs, you may have to rig up something to mount your tap head to. Btw, I have never came across any wires in the side walls or the door of any refer.

Can you tell if all the parts that come in contact with beer were sanitized before assembly or do you connect the system and then sanitize?

Do you have a video that shows how to store the kegs in one room (basement) and the beer tower in another room?
@zugmeister314
@zugmeister314 4 года назад
That would be really, really hard to do. You'd need some way to actively cool those (very heavily) insulated lines between the kegs and the taps. Otherwise you'll get warm beer out of your first half dozen+ pours! Maybe you could look at how commercial vendors do it?

Can you put the tap on the side of the fridge instead of the door?
@davidrivers2835
@davidrivers2835 5 лет назад
Yes. BUT... you have to be very careful when drilling as the fridges cooling coils are usually on the sides of the fridge. Carefully drill from the inside of the fridge just through the first layer of plastic then feel around inside of there to check for cooling coils.

What if I want to run a line to a tap at a bar through a wall? My refrigerator would be in another room and was wondering on what insulation options I should consider for the line from fridge to tap?
@KegWorks
@KegWorks 3 года назад
Depending on the length of the run, you may need to look into some cooling options in addition to insulating the lines. Give our customer care a call at 877-636-3673, they will be able to direct you to our draft specialist. He'll be able to assist you in getting everything set up. Cheers!

I am a seltzer addict, have been using a spare fridge & pressure tanks to make my own for years. Just had to replace my fridge when the old one blew. I've been keeping the CO2 cylinder inside with the pressure cylinders, but would like to put the CO2 tank outside. I'm having trouble learning if there's stuff inside the side wall of a fridge that I don't want to drill through (i.e. electric wires). Any help? It's an older freezer-on-top fridge/freezer.
@KegWorks
@KegWorks 5 лет назад
On most refrigerators the electrical is reserved to the back. Unless you have water/ice dispenser on the front of the fridge. The sides I am not sure about, although they tend to be thicker than drilling through the front.
@kellyhoward6941
@kellyhoward6941 5 лет назад
Thank you for the info! Tho I realized that the "new" fridge is wider than the old one, so I don't have room to put the CO2 tank outside anyway until/unless I rearrange the laundry room. Good to know, tho! It'd be nice to have more fridge space if I can figure out how to shove things around.

What are the pros and cons of door mounter or tower mounted faucet?
@KegWorks
@KegWorks 7 лет назад
Well they require different set ups. Usually a tower is mounted to a refrigeration unit/stand alone kegerator while a Door Mounted kegerator is used with a converted fridge/freezer. Towers are stand alone units specific for beer but are usually more expensive. Door Mounted are cheaper but you may encounter some issues with the DIY nature of the fridge, as it's not specifically meant to hold a keg & CO2 system.

Usually a 4" long shank works best through fridge doors. A 3" shank might be cutting it too close on some doors.
