Been working on a small backpack for a couple weeks. As much as I have I still need some things. It takes time to figure things out. Clothing ..food...hygiene. .medical...shelter. I have a couple lists going ..that helps.

I'd say, to add to the shelter part, throw in a SOL sport utility blanket, super reliable, super tough, and waterproof, and the heat reflection is crazy. Also like 20 bucks.

Anyone who is in an urban environment might want to consider a short length of chain and a lock. It can be used to secure a gate or door and if you live in one of the major cities where carrying a knife will get you arrested you can clasp the lock on one end and swing it defensively. Also maybe a cheep siphon pump to "borrow" some gas if need be.

I'd take a shorter USB cable. Depending on the quality of the long one this can really have a significant effect on the resistance of the cable, and thus the charging speed and capacity. Great video.

i do have a video i made a few years ago called my summer ultralight backpacking gear setup where i use the 22 ltr backpack . many of the things i used in that video have changed nowadays for me .. i have gotten lighter and smaller . i guess i should say that mine is more of a entire kit full 1 pound 5 ounces wanderlust nomad tent or a Terra nova solar competition 1p tent 2 pounds 3 oz , xlight neoair mattress , depending on the time of year cold zpacks 10 deg sleeping bag or summer Kelty Cosmic down 40 , sawyer mini squeeze filter , Cloraflock chemical treatment , snow peaks 700 ml titanium cup and UGI trywing stove with esbit solid fuel . .. so this is nice to see you showing how to make a little kit with a cheap price to do it . and i will say i do prefer to use a Osprey Excos 34ltr pack . but you have done a great job to help someone that is overwhelmed with it all .

Wish I lived in America for the simple fact that everything is so cheap! You have no idea how much of a rip off all that stuff is down under.

cabelas has an ultralight bag like that REI one. but the price is lower and it has waterbottle sleeves on both sides and is hydration pack compatible if you eant that. plus if it is empty it folds inside out into its own small carry pouch that makes a decent pillow in a pinch. i think it was less than 20 bucks and its been great.

great ideas for a starter pack. you can always upgrade items from there as money allows, but this basic kit would get you by even if you never get around to upgrading anything. Personally, my 1st upgrade would be the canteen, but that's just me. I like a good lightweight metal bottle with a nesting cup,which the one you put in your kit would work fine, just a metal bottle, but your idea would work if you don't want to spend the extra money.

Add a water spigot tool. 3-4 bucks and a few ounces is worth your life. I have mine in my bag and another in my Jeep. I "borrow" water from stores all the time when I'm traveling far.

Nice video. As an urban medic I prefer the swat tourniquet over thinner brands. It can be awkward to use, but after testing several brands I find it the least uncomfortable.

If you live in the Desert buy one of those $1 rain gear coats anyway the reason being is you can use the plastic from it to create a solar still. If you dont know what that is LEARN. Simply put a hole you put plastic over and sometimes fill with vegetation you seal the plastic around the hole and place your water container in the bottom of the hole then put a light weight pebble in the center of the plastic so that the moisture from the sun collects in the hole on the plastic and drips to the center down into your cup. Having a rain coat like that would provide enough plastic to make several which is what you need to get your days water intake.

Biggest thing I would say to y'all is dont worry about it happening right away take your time and buy when you have the money. You dont have to go on amazon and spend $300 on tons of shit that is just going to sit there. Cause it will... I bought a cheap camo walmart bag $25 it was like a lunch holder really, insulated. I didn't buy anything else for a while than I bought some fishing shit. Threw some line in the bag some lures and it sat there. Started watching survival vids and learned how to run a ridge line so I bought a double sided mylar and reflective shelter tarp $12 again and some Paracord Tender I had some bandannas and knowing their multi use I tossed one in my bag gathered random items over time that I knew could be used to survive My exs old mini mirror now a signal device in my pack old pencil sharpener now a tender item. Didn't buy anything for a long time. Then I bought a UST firesteel and some storm proof matches. Later I got some rolls of paracord. I was given a decent cheap Knife. A few weeks later I bought a Stanley cooker set, a Bic lighter. Over a period of about a year or more I built a bag just buying small when it was convenient. DO NOT make the mistake of buying lots of small items at the same time it adds up FAST even at walmart. The most expensive item is going to be a Knife. Doesn't mean you need to buy one maybe you already have a nice fixed blade. If you make everything new you are going to break the bank for a bag that is just going to sit there lets be honest. Just take your time let it add up use what you have learn multiple uses for everyday items. Theres a saying the more you know the less you carry. Its important to note we all are not bugging out to the woods. So what you put in a suitcase or duffel is just as good. You dont need tons of gear take weight into consideration. You may not be only walking a mile you might need to travel several is that pack weight truly ideal? Consider EDC keychains or mini kits as fast lightweight alternatives. You only need what you truly need. Police dont disappear when SHTF so pack what you legally can carry dont go to prison over having something you aren't supposed to because of a week long civil unrest event.

Shit, i have spent probably around $2000 on my INCH bag. With that being said, i could build someone a solid bugout bag for $500. I'd start with a surplus large ALICE pack. Just cover the essentials. It can be done if you know what gear to get and the prices. Most bug out bag videos on RU-vid have too much useless crap. Mora Bushcraft Black, Gerber Suspension multi tool, maybe a large chopper knife like the Ontario SP53, and a Silky Gomboy for sure with the tools. Good headlamp, sawyer mini, stainless steel water bottle and nesting cup, cheaper sil nylon tarp or military poncho, Mylar sport utility blanket, paracord, green patrol bag from the modular sleep system and compression sack, cheap mess kit. Ferro rod and bic lighters with wetfire and trioxane, med kit with essentials, 1inch gorilla tape and gorilla glue, contractor trash bags, stainless steel cook pot, basic hygiene kit, shemagh, and couple of bandanas. That about covers it. Maybe a cheaper lensatic compass. It is very overwhelming, but buy it one piece at a time.

Hand disinfectant = fire starter. +1 on the pencil sharpener, wool hat, clean underwear, socks, space blanket. A good magnetic compass, iodine pills, crank AM radio or police scanner (to listen for help or areas to avoid). A big bag of shelled-salted-peanuts are great. First, they're very light, second they make you stop & sit n rest, to eat. You're resting, reevaluating and eating all at the same time.

Not bad choices, not my choices but I know I could do one up pretty cheap as well.

I can only think well I'm from Missouri the show me state. show me how this is going to fit in that 18 ltr pack show me you actually use this exact kit for a 3 day backpacking trip . i think you could get the rei flash 22 ltr backpack for the price you said that is a much much better choice of pack it has mesh bottle holders something you need to have and more room still in the ultralight category . i have actually used the flash 22 ltr backpacking in winter down to the low 20s that said was not a kit that would fall into a beginner price range. but the pack is a better choice .

Great ideas! I'm an American living in the Philippines. Ive been seriously prepping for a year now and still not done but I have what I need. Do I need all of it? Hell yes!!! Typhoons, earth quakes, tsunami's now they elected a dictator as President that vows to fill Manila Bay with dead bodies. This is info for anyone with relatives here or is going to the Philippines. People comment to me to just get out, well I have a plan in place to evacuate to Thailand but here is the thing. Manila International airport is against manila Bay. To get to it you have to travel about 20 miles of dangerous city just to get to it and Manila will get dangerous if civil war or Marshall Law is enacted so keep that in mind travelers.

have you considered a "evolution" pack/system - base (core) + 1/2 upgrades/additions + 3/4 upgrades/additions + ???? + cache system + ???? = book of Eli system ? just a thought since you seem a "practical" type ...

enjoyed the VID, without saying I think you imply to update your bag, especially if in an area where have large seasonal changes. clothing options for winters in Wisconsin is different than summers.... some inexpensive options would add, sunglasses and in an urban area, safety vest. Walking home or injured lying down, want to be seen, now a days dog walkers, bikers, runners, walkers all wearing safety vests. This would not be out of place and may prevent you from becoming a casualty.

GideonsTactical is a great and extremely recommended channel to anybody who is interested in a vast amount of product reviews and great advice to consider for preparation for when 'CHTF" either hiking a mountainous rigid trail or in the middle of an urban densely populated city environment which is what I tend encounter, living in NYC. Great , great work keep it up. Might I add some advisory ? Yes there's a "although" something that I saw particularly in this video , no harm is meant by this comment on the product more or less I'm hoping to look out for you and others, if you don't already know, or might of have heard. Those Clif protein bars you show at 23:41 pack a high amount of protein and advertise how much protein they pack to appeal to consumers, well when you get a chance take a look at the ingredients it's first ingredient is a soy product (Soya, Soy protein isolate). Okay and ? Well soy in particular isn't a suggested product for males. Hopefully this will encourage you to do some research on your own don't only take my advise about the negatives of soy products on men.In a tight pinch or once in a while it isn't considered the worst thing for you, but for a male to consistently consume soy products it's not suggested, here's why, soy beans or soy products don't really care what gender anyone is and tends to produce chemicals with considerably similar effects to the female hormone estrogen when consumed. So with that said a consistent amount of soy products can cause some odd gender bending symptoms to males. Just thought I'd bring it to your attention. My 2 centYou can get a backpack on craigslist or at the thrift store that is cheaper and better quality. I don't recommend that people get battery flashlights because batteries eventually die. (don't leave them in your flashlight because they have a tendency to leak.) You can buy a hand-crank flashlight that will last you a long time. A hand-crack flashlight radio is even better. There are all kinds of options at affordable prices. You can buy cheaper larger Ferro rods that are non name brand. They will last a lot longer for you than that skinny little thing. Everyone has cotton and Vaseline sitting somewhere in their home. Simply carry both to start a easy fire. If you separate both you can use the Vaseline for medical use, for dry lips, an you can also put it on your tools. Just mix it with cotton if you are looking for a accelerant that will keep a fire long enough in bad weather. The mora knife is probably the best knife you can get. You don't necessarily need to get a bahco. You can get a 12" bow saw for 5$ or less and it is much more versatile because you can carry different blades. Which means, you can carry hacksaw blades which would allow you to cut metal. Don't give up the saw for a multitool. The mora 511 cost under 10$. A bow saw with blades 10$ and get yourself a 3$ cheap china multi tool. The knife on the multi tool wont be the best quality but you'll have plyers, and a cross an flat screw driver for urban use. That's 23$ total and you have a all around good set up. However, if I was you I would also go with a chopping tool. Something like a large knife or axe so you can break down wood an chop at wood to make things. And both will offer you a defensive weapon. You can get a hatchet on ebay for cheap. The Ontario machete only cost 20$ and it is a great tool. You'll have to make a sheath. Dave Canterbury recommends duct take for a medical kit. That's it. lol. You really don't need to put a lot of money in a kit. Some antibiotic cream, some ibuprofen, and some tweezers. Cut up a shirt and carry a few strips that will tie around a arm or leg. total cost of a medical kit, 0$ because you should have all of it at home already. A emergency blanket or a poncho is insufficient shelter. There are videos on youtube in which people have went out with their bags with only that type of shelter and they could not make it. It also does not address the possibility or the reality that you will be with family. Buy a good 12 x12 tarp. It is light. It will give you the ability to make two important kinds of shelter. (1) you can make a enclosed winter type shelter that at least two other people can fit in. (2) It will give you the ability to make a lean too or another type of open shelter that will cover at least 2 or 3 people. If you pair a tarp up with a bug net you will have a really good set up. If that doesn't interest you I suggest a 2 man tent. You can actually fit 3 or 4 people in one. Water is the most important thing in your whole kit in my opinion. If you bug out you will find yourself walking long distances and you will need water. A plastic bottle like that only carries 32 oz I think and that is not enough. What I always recommend is that people carry a small 1 gallon water jug in their hands. A jug is sturdy and you can carry a lot more water with you. If you wrap duct tap around it, it will provide protection and in turn you'll have tap to go to. However, you should also carry the other water bottle so you have two containers in case one fails, or you need t ditch the jug. I don't recommend that you put food inside your bag. (1) you'll have to watch the expiration dates and a lot of people forget. (2) it weighs down your bag with perishable items. What you should do is carry a separate bag with food in it. And I would carry as much food as I possibly can. I'm thinking a few weeks. Why carry a few days when you can carry so much more. Who knows how long it will be before you can g home, if at all. If you're going in your vehicle fill it up with food and water. Keep your bob separate from the food. keep only survival items inside it. You should add a small sewing kit, toilet paper, a small sharpening stone or rod, a map of the area, and about 15 feet for climbing rope so you can carry wood, and other things, use as a belt, hang things in tree, and all kinds of other stuff. If you make those adjustments you'll have a bob the functions as a short term set up but will provide long term if needed.

I say, forget the bug out bag. Stay put N stay safe... so here I am, I'm 74 years old, not in real bad health, but I do have "health Issues" heart, diabetes and COPD. So the thing is what good would "Bugging out" do me, the answer is none... SOOoooo outside of an " Toto, I have a feeling that we're not in Kansas anymore " event or Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicking over a lamp and causing “a hot time in the ol’ town ta night”, I'm stayin put N' not goin anywhere, no sir re sir there will be more than enough 2 legged el banditos to deal with right here and even more out on the roads and in the woods. Me and the wife are stayin put right here at ol soggy bottom acres land and cattle company Where we have a huracain fence and four walls that suround us and a roof over our headand if we are wiped out by a thermonuclear flash bang we won’t have time to worry about “Buggin Out” anyhow... and what good would running do anyway, you'd just die tired and glowing in the dark and besides you wouldn't have time to get around the block if that were the event... Then me and the wife are sheltering in place, we live on elevated acreage so other than a Noah come to Jesus type flood we're good, we’re high and dry. We have a well, and a 300 gallon rain water collection system (for watering the garden ) a small Tom Jefferson type fish pond (actually it’s a small knee deep above ground wading pool that’s filtered and aerated as well as shaded) that I keep well stocked with freshly caught fish that I also feed until I need them. A well stocked larder and a garden, an emergency Generator. And our 1000 gal underground propane tank is kept full or no lower than 80% and we have a fire place and 4 cords of fire wood under cover. I have always kept firearms and ammo for hunting and in a real emergency they will work just fine for home protection even sticking a double barrel out the upstairs window and squeezing off a couple rounds to alert the neighbors ( oh yeah and I know some wise crackers gonna say " what ya gonna do after you shoot those 2 rounds? All you have then is a double barreled club"... well gee I dunn know guess, I’ll just reload, DUH!)... also if it really gets that bad and we run low on meat, our neighbors all have dogs and cats, as an aside and for a lead up here... did you know that while on their expedition in 1804 -06 Lewis and Clark & co. ate over 200 dogs and came to favor that meat? I don't know about you but I am not above eating fluffy or Fido to keep from starving, so if you happen to live near me and have a cat or dogs , that you want to keep, better keep them inside... , and as my full blood Delaware N/A grandfather used to joke when we had stew for supper, he'd say, " dig deep the puppy is on the bottom"... Oh and yes I do have a ”get home bag” and folding bike in my trunk so if the car for some reason dies, and there are no tow trucks…I have transport and supplies should I get stuck out and away from home overnight...

luke i also have used the Cabelas ultralight 21 ltr ultralight backpack it's a good pack as well . the thing is they are small and big enough to keep handy i always take a ultralight down jacket . 550 cord is heavy and it takes a lot of room up look into sea to submit cordage good stuff and ultralight small as can be with reflect stuff .
