I had a somewhat loud exhaust on my moped when I was a kid. And when it popped and banged a bit, sometimes it would really hurt my ears. My motorcycle now, '84 suzuki gs850, has an aftermarket 4 in 2 exhaust system, based on the original. It's decently quit but still gives that low rumble and decent roar when cracking the throttle. Btw, that 4 in 2 looks way better than any 4 in 1 would've been! great design upgrade!

Thank you for sharing this with me yes I believe its been mentioned here a few times in the comments already however I will say it again because its so true. Just because Its loud music doesn’t make the music better and same for exhausts on bikes I think :)

loud pipes save lives, awesome video. In Germany (80 million people crowded in little space) there is a huge debate about loud motorcycles, in part hysterically. In fact your neighbous don´t like you if the bike is to loud. If the tone is deep it is more accepted than a screaming sound. Thats why I only do two cylinder bikes. I admire your work and your garage. I am only doing hobby shop stuff on a low budget, a million miles away from your professional set up. My bikes are never finished. I constantly work on them and try to improve them.

I’ve got two: a 2000 BMW R1100RS that I share with my dad, but since he’s eight hours away it’s mostly mine (plus he has three of his own). I also picked up a 1970 Honda SL 100 barn find (was actually sitting a farmer’s tree grove) this Spring for something to learn wrenching on. I’ve currently got the tank de-rusting in an electrolysis tank; once that’s done I can try starting it for the first time. Love your channel - it’s been helping me learn how these machines work.

Dude, your videos are so helpful! I'm right in the beginning of building my own bike, had 3 bikes already, and couldn't find the one I want, so decided to build one myself. And it's going to be honda cb750, your channel is such a diamond find for me! Thank you for your hard work, I know how much time it takes to film your process, think about what you say, edit it and actually build the bike in the same time, you do it really well! And the quality is insane, both your work and the content! Thank you! I'm gonna use your videos as a bible when I'll start building my own bike. Cheers from Russia 🥶🤝!

Another truly awesome video Dan running the pipes both sides is ascetically perfect, keeping both sides of the bike the same just looks so much better. Noise wise I love a nice rasp but would reign it in from stupid loud and find a happy balance. I would want heads to turn in admiration not displeasure. I am working on a CB750 same model as yours but a scrambler build. All your videos on this bike have been such a inspiration towards starting my build. So much so I became a Patreon quite a few months back and just currently setting up my own RU-vid channel, again all with help and advice from you via the Patreon messaging. Hey Dan, I am a big fan of your videos. I have a 1982 CM450C and a 1980 CCB650C. Both are Cafe racer projects I got as rusted out basket cases with no idea if the motor would start. I find it very rewarding to give these old girls a new life and in my area (Northern Wisconsin) it is rare to see cafe racers so I always get comments and questions. Even in Harley country people cant help but love the look of a clean cafe racer. keep up the great work!

Hey love the show. I have a stock cb750 from about 1984 or 85 with fairing / wind shield etc. it currently has 4 into 1s on it from a previous owner. A good mate donated it to me to finish the build and it is patiently waiting in my shed until time and money and skill are mot my main excuses for not taking it further. Your vids are great for the process & skills side of things and to keep me motivated to do it. I can see welding is key to good results will get that sorted before tackling the bike. Also sourcing parts like an upgraded front end for safety will be a priority. Thanks for the great content - keeping it coming!

Wonderful with the 2 into 1 on each side. The pooping you mentioned, in my experience anyway was more than not a little much on the air side of your mixture. I would jet up a size and most often it would be a perfect fit.

Hi Dan from Boston! I do love watching your videos and am learning quite a bit. I’ve been in IT my entire career but at 57 am thinking about “what’s next?”. I’ve taken the last year and a half off as a sabbatical and during that time, have been tearing down and rebuilding my own bike…..a 2013 Moto Guzzi v7 Racer. While I love the OEM look of this bike AND the fact there just are not that many of them on the road, I still wanted to make it my own. While I’m limited in what I can do myself (which is why I enjoy watching your videos as well as Jish in the UK), working with my hands on my bike and taking it apart is so incredibly relaxing and will hopefully be able to start doing this full time before long. In the mean time, keep posting these vids (I know this one is from about a year ago) and I’ll keep watching and learning! By the by, love the 2 into 1 on each side…..looks awesome!

That's a good tip on using that bit of wood to mark 180°, I've got a Harley Sportster which I've changed the exhaust system to it, the old one was drowning the engine, more of a free flow exhaust, loud pipes save lives I suppose, also,,, I fitted a Kickstart, more of a panhead look

Hey Dan, i think the final exhaust is the best. I didn't like the line of that third pipe that you changed. Good decision. I was surprised how loud it was, especially after your video with the CX exhaust. My son and I are building a Monster 900. I also ride one and it has after market pipes. They give it the Ducati sound we love without being offensive. I think a lot of bikes sounds can be offensive and off putting. Especially small bore bikes with noisy pipes! Love your work! Keep it coming!

Ugh late to the party as per usual.... G'day, Dan! Where in Oz are you? I'm S/E Vic. Prolly doesn't mean much now but when I was building car exhausts years ago I did a twin system for a ZD (1970) Fairlane with a built 302 Windsor motor. Dual 2" all the way from the Tri-Y headers with 12" long hotdogs and 16" long narrow bodied straight through glass-pack mufflers before the diff with full tail pipes exiting at the rear bumper. Started her up and man, she sounded soooo tuff!! Real American muscle car sound! Well, the owner came back a few days later and wasn't really happy with it as it was a bit too "racey" for him lol. I cut a balance pipe in it and it sounded crap. To me, anyways. It may make the motors run a bit smoother equalizing the exhausts but in my opinion balance pipes kill the knarly, raw muscle sound. Each to their own but I won't ever run a balancer in my twins. What did you end up going with and how was the sound quality in the end? I really like how your's sounds at the end of this video lol! Love it!! Beautiful bike and skills, too, mate. Bravo!! *oh the old bloke really liked the sound of his Fairlane in the end, go figure!

Hi Dan, my current project is a Yamaha XV700. It needs a lot of work as I got as a roller with plastic tub of parts. I have been working through what exists of the wiring loom and have got it to a point where it will turn over and now has spark. I've got to get the fuel system installed and try to patch together what exhaust it has before I can attempt a start. It's been a welcome distraction in these trying times. Keep up the good work you do.

Amazing build, quite a inspiration, thank you:-) To your question, i hate loud pipes more then everything. Lived for quite a while in Asia / USA and Mexico and one thing these three countrys have in ccommon is loud pipes. The first thing people do on the bike is going straight pipes. So the us navy officer, the Mexican Druglord and the Asia Surfer wake up there whole neighborhood when the go to fight another country, go selling some dope or try to catch waves in sunrise. IT SUCKS I like exhaust systems where i can drive easy out my hood without be a pia for everyone but when i hit the throttle outside of town it makes a good sound:-) My 2 Cents Best regards from switzerland

Just to answer your question, I have a suzuki DL 1000 and the stock exhaust was too "civilised" and sometimes cars and other vehicles couldn't hear me approaching, so I have put some road legal aftermarket exhausts (with dB killers) and that gave a not too loud but much nicer and richer sound. I like an exhaust that is audible but not too loud.

Sounds great as it is Dan .mines a 06 Bandit 650 4 into 1 with a 450mm freeflow stubbie exhaust and yup louder than std and has saved me as people hear that pipe more than the drainpipe sized original OEM.. Yes to loud pipes . Love that little scissor lift it's got a great aspect for doing just what your using it for .interested in the pipe clamps you were using are they specifics or just a modified type like a vice clamp with different jaws .. Missed out for a brekkie watch but glad I got the evening show lol ..great vid as always Dan thanks

Wow that's loud! Loosing some power on that. Anyroad, thank you for all those tips. Making a "third hand" is always helpful. Whether it is tape or a weldwire. Well done! I ride a Honda CB650R -19 with some customizition and more on the way. But no bigbuild though. And I would not ride a loud bike, rules or not. Just before you changed your exhaust into 4-2 I thought that a 4-2 system would look better...

Thank you John, You are 100% right, I believe it's been mentioned here a few times in the comments already however I will say it again because it's so true. Just because Its loud music doesn’t make the music better and same for exhausts on bikes I think :) Great choice in bike, what year is yours?

Exhaust looks great, much better now you decided to choose for 2 into 1. About that footpedal, i don’t see why you can’t figure out to modify your welder by adding a footpedal. Strip that cable and bypass a footpedal in it! It’s not impossible...

Interesting to see you video, I have a 85 Suzuki GSX750ES cafe with gsxr front end, gs400 tank and ebay seat. Needs a new exhaust as the (gutted) standard one look too long now. Planning on early gsxr four into one downpipes with a small muffler. My welding isn't up to scratch to make one 😀

Pipes look great dan, nice work. I’ve never really liked the look of full pie cut exhausts as I reckon they look to busy. Have one of those cone mufflers on my cb550 that Taylor got me onto, sounds awesome. Maybe not as loud as in your bike cause I have a four into one on it. Cheers, Wayne.

Hi Dan. Jeremy from Newcastle, NSW here. My thoughts are the top end of legal is about right for these bikes. I think part of the attraction of riding a special bike is a great exhaust note but not so loud it’s detracts from enjoying the ride. Love the videos. I am doing an ‘83 XJ750 build myself. I have done the USD forks as well but had to engineer my own custom triple clamp. With regard to welding, I bought a CIG Transmig 220 following your review of the ultra 185. I have only only just tried using the TIG this weekend which I found quite difficult. I would like to do a SS exhaust similar to yours but thinking of keeping it 4 single pipes. I am trying to get a particular exhaust sound. So timing on release of this video was great for me. With some perseverance hopefully I can get there. Keep up the good work. There’s a lot of work to do before the XJ is roadworthy. Maybe I can have target having it ready for when Annastacia would let me in for a ride lol! Cheers.

Pretty late to the whole exhaust thing, but i built a suzuki gn 125 into somewhat of a scrambler and had some inspiration from your own build. Now as anyone can imagine 125cc bikes are not loud at all, but i once had it run without any kind of muffler, just a straight pipe and it was music to my ears. Now as good as it sounded, it still was a bit loud, so if german regulations would allow it, all i would get would be some rather cheap cone muffler from ebay or something, as i have seen people do it on the same model and they all pretty much sounded amazing. Loud is nice to a certain extent, but if you overdo it it just becomes annoying.

You mentioned what welder to buy. But what would you suggest someone new to welding do to start learning. I have no idea the diff between a mig and tig weld but I've heard both millions of times while watching these types of shows. I haven't even seen a welder in real life! Are there courses you can do somewhere?

Recently bought an '81 CB750F, (my first Honda), amazingly beautiful even as standard, might still build it some day. Got it for cheap knowing it has a rattling sound emitting more from the clutch side, do you have any idea what this might be? Keep up the Great work, hopefully you get a sponsor someday soon. I know I am a bit late replying to your question about loud pipes. Many people swear by the adage "loud pipes save lives". Though there is no scientific evidence to their safety, they do sound cool. I have a 2016 Victory Cross Country with cams and some other high performance upgrades. The worst decision I made was to put an open exhaust on the bike. Yes, it sounds cool but it took away from the power and rideability of the bike. I do long distance endurance riding and even with my high quality full face helmet, it was just too loud for a 19 hour day. In the end, I moved to a Bassani 2 into 1 full system. Performance improved and sound was more tolerable for long distance. There you go, my $0.02 (USD). :-)

Hey brother I wanted to tell you to clean up those pipes you can get a power drill and put a cup wheel wire adapter and mesh sandpaper that looks like it would be used for drywall I think, and you can glue two ends together, and using the end of the cupped wire wheel on a drill it works very well to polish out the welds, I seen it on Allen millyards RU-vid Channel, check it out brother! he built a stainless steel exhaust also and cleaned up his welds on a stainless system he made for a Kawasaki KZ turbo and it came out really nice, I know it wouldn't work the same for yours cuz yours already looks badass!!! I have a 72 CB750 that I would absolutely love to have a system just like yours on! It would be perfect! Well someday hopefully, but you should really check it out brother, it would really help you out to clean up the welds, it makes it look like they were never there and the whole system look all mandrel bent...
