I would just like to second that I would really enjoy the documents/handouts. I was inspired by this idea to smash a bunch of content together. Would love to see the handouts.

Love the idea of a background handout - really a cool way to collaborate w/ your players right from the jump of your campaign! As a DM, I really feel like I could stand to find more ways to give my players opportunities to engage in "World Building" through their PCs

Thanks! One example: my player created the bloodhunter from Oakhurst. So, I asked if the bloodhunter conclave should be near Oakhurst or far away. He said near. So now, in this campaign, there's a a keep near Oakhurst where bloodhunters are created and trained. This is especially helpful when using a persistent homebrew world. Because returning players know their old characters are the reason certain things are the way they are.

Great video! Looking forward to the series. I like your take on the player handout. And it's helpful to see exactly how you're setting up the sandbox, while keeping the scope small. My problem is i get carried away with ideas and end up with too many locations.

Thanks! I used to do that, too. Just remember there is always another campaign. You can explore other places and more stories in the next campaign.

Super! Im running a homebrew world and campaign, but will be using a lot of adventures out there to stitch it together. The theme from phandelver and Below will fit perfect for what Im aiming for. Will follow this series since your simple prep sheet helped me a lot.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. A lot of people would have hated this behind some sort of patreon and that alone deserves a like and sub. Keep up the good work.

@@direden Absolutely, I am a bit new and I see you use a lot of 4E content. Do you have any videos about converting?

Before even watching this video I wanted to say I had once an idea to do something like this, but with Lost Mine of Phandelver, since Shattered obelisk wasn't out yet, and addint Ghosts of Saltmarsh and Against the Cult of the Reptile God. I'm curious to see how you will pull it off

That would be a cool combo! Thanks, the next campaign prep video will be out on Saturday. And if people continue to watch and enjoy those videos... I'll do regular recap & session prep videos throughout the campaign.

Im newer to DMing, and this will be great! Tips for prep are always helpful but also the only adventure I've run so far is Mines of Phandelver and I want to do Shattered Obelisk as a continuation but I tried a bit of customization originally that may unbalance the continuation of the game. I want to sandbox the game up to level 5, have their old pcs doing the goblins, the thugs in town and the wave echo cave. During their side adventures as they come back they'll hear about their old pcs and the good they're doing. They may possibly meet them at some point and I also want to use the second half of the campaign to corrupt those pcs for some custom fun battles for them. But i suspect my ambitions exceed my capabilities so im here to learn any and all tips you can help with! Also feedback if my idea is even worth executing is appreciated too!

That sounds perfectly do-able. I would suggest running Dragons of Icespire Peak... it's a perfect sandbox to run alongside Lost Mine of Phandelver... and you could easily build up to the 2nd half of Shattered Obelisk.

This video and the factions one are so good I’m running DoIP, LMoP as separate campaigns and this gives me a perfect template to “put more meat on the bone” for the DoIP campaign. Especially since I’ve wanted to run some/a lot of Tales from the Yawning Portal I’ll def add Sunless and Forge I to my already going DoIP campaign, prob not Phandelver since the same players also play in my LMoP campaign. One request though…. You kind of touched on it inadvertently in the factions video… but since SC is levels 1-3 and my players prob wont see it till 5-8, I’d love to see an in-depth video on Scaling up and down, especially in the context of such an open sandbox when anything can happen at any point…

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-05VWofhNMHI.htmlsi=QGkmNC_mEXzpoNzj This video on the LazyDM deadly encounter benchmark should be helpful for determining challenge rating. I ran Sunless Citadel for a group of twelve 1st-3rd level players... which is basically like running it for four 4-6th level players. I added 1-2 Hobgoblins/bugbears to every group of goblins. I made the goblinoid leader a Hobgoblin Captain. I used the Knight & Priest stat blocks as Dragonborn leaders for the kobolds. (You could also use the Half-Dragon stat block) I made Balsag an Ettin (see why below.) I upgraded the Twig Blights with Needle Blights, Vine Blights, and Awakened Trees. I made the 2 tree spawn adventurers... Vampire Spawn stat blocks. I used the Mage stat block for Belak. Then, I replaced the giant frog with Chimera. I made Belak’s faction a cult of Demogorgon... the chimera was their avatar of Demogoron (ya know...the multi-headed thing.) To sell the chimera theme. The goblins wore goat skull masks... The hobgoblins had dragons carved on their armor... the Bugbears had big fur collars on their hide armor (making them look like lions.)

Lendore Isles series from AD&D mixed with Keep on the Borderlands. Start in Restenford from Secret of Bonehill adventure... Splash in Keep on the Borderlands (cool dungeon crawl) and Assassin's Knot (a murder mystery) for that sandbox feel. The Sandbox progresses to the Bonehill dungeon... and the Deep Dwarven Delve. The main thing you need is a plot, because despite the name there is no real secret in Bonehill. If you want 5e... you could add Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and a cool independent adventure called The Claws of Madness. And put those two in the middle of Ghost of Saltmarsh. The other two are both island themed adventures, which fits really well with Saltmarsh. All you need to do is create a map that includes them all.

I will check out these adventures, I have been wanting to do a sandbox and I really like the idea od stitching together pre written adventures.Keep on the borderlands is on my list, I'm watching the rest of your vids now, thanks!@@direden

Great video! Does anyone know what quest is being referenced with the two gangs of Orcs in Leilon? And what campaign it is from?
@direden
@direden Месяц назад
That's one I just made up inspired by old movies from the 60s, Fist Full of Dollars and Yojimbo. In those movies, two gangs fight for control of a town, and the hero plays both sides against each other. Which is exactly what my players did in the game... even though they had no clue about those old movies.
