Seriously heartwarming knowing that he's teaching his familly the way i read about in my grandfathers journal I wish my family had continued the tradition but sadly they moved far far away from the country life and moved to a city where half the kids (my siblings) don't really like when we were 5yr. now 32 im saving to buy back a piece of land that was in our family for generations

I was glad to hear you say 'can't is not in our vocabulary'. I would never allow my daughter to use that word. One day she said to me ' Daddy , you know that word that you said that I could never use, well sometimes I just need to use it.' I told her that she did not. I told her that she could say that 'up until now I have been successful in attaining that goal' and that would be true but saying that I can't would limit her future. She is now 28 and she meets no limits. She says that she never thinks about whether she can, only whether she wants to or not. She has been well more successful than I have been and I attribute a lot of that to not allowing the use of that four letter word. The very first word I hear from a lot of people is ' I can't'. If you say you can or if you say you can't, you are right. Make the choice. It's yours to make.

My great grandfather had a peach orchard on it years ago, the swales and berms still exist and continue to function today. may i add some surgestions: 1. how about taking that tarp double, i dont thing there is that much needed for the floor before the dam 2. you could baricade some of the tark to release some presure into the ground, with sticks or more 2by4s 3. maybe ad another piece of tube directly next to it, as it would double the flow rate, without much stress. these were just some thoughts of a german IT student, watching this after dinner. keep on going, i love the content and its comforting to watch.

I started flood irrigation around 12. Those are some nice gates and a backhoe would have been cool, but as a kid I had a lot of fun building dams and digging with a shovel. We had farmers that would pay us 25c a gopher so when they would flood the field in the summer we would stack up the gophers and make some money.

I remember being taught this with the fire service, granted was for making a water dam for use to cool heated acetylene tanks but principle is the same. we use a sort exension ladder split into its 3 pieces and lased together, place the tarp, or savage sheet into it and secure. its an amazingly strong and ingenious method. Great to see "old" techniques being used to great effect.

Here in my part of Wyoming we've been irrigating with ditchboxes and canvas dams for decades, and many still are. Though water law varies by state it would be to your benefit to check into your adjudicated water rights, that way you would know your priority in the system in years of drought and also your allotted amount ...likely in cubic feet per second. You right may have priorty to several times the amount your are receiving .... same with it you are on a private ditch company. Either way if the state or ditch company administers your water rights there should be a ditch rider/water commissioner to keep everyone honest on their water usage. I'm currently in the process of rebuilding a number of my irrigation features. Good Luck to you !!!

@larrycutting4514
@larrycutting4514 3 года назад
Your "old" method was used while I was growing up in So. CO. in the 60s & 70s. On top of that, aluminum and plastic pipes and hoses were used to siphon out of the ditch into the field instead of a culvert. Thereby allowing more control and flexibility. But those were agriculture rows and lands where you're flooding instead. Learning the "old" ways again.

Personal experience as a field irrigator in Central Oregon, when using those tarps it's best to have about a dozen 15+ lb rocks to line the bottom of each tarps edge under the water to prevent it from pushing out prematurely during the ditch fill. Have lots of tarps and boards on standby because they can blow out pretty easily and with no warning. Other then that I say no to rain boots and yes to crocs and shorts to just get right in that ditch to set your tarps but I don't think you intend to change out as much as I do in a day

I was watching some of the older vids on your channel, and watched the Series of 5 about 50 Tools every Dude should own... I do HVAC, have for about 15 yrs now, and I found that if you get 2-3 Glow in the Dark Colors, and mark your Tape Measure at the 6In with just the one color for just the Half-Inch ticks, 1Ft in one and 2Ft in the other, then Alternate on Odds and Even Foot marks (DON'T USE THE Half Inch Color), after you memorize the color specifics you've set up, it makes measuring Duct runs and Copper Tubing and wiring a breeze under a dark house. ( I'm a 3rd Generation Stanley Tape user, but that little change for my line of work, was a pretty sweet couple hours to do it.) Just thought I'd share my weird, semi-useless modification.
