This is the first desk I ever built. I would love to get your feedback on it!
In this video we put together my dream desk! The ultimate desk… at least as I see it. I work from home as do many of us in 2020. In a typical day I might do video editing, animation, product design, voice recording and editing, graphic design, VR experience development, and I might even make a few drawings in the process. My perfect desk is the one that makes all of that happen without too much clutter. I set out to design and build the ultimate productivity solution.
To pull that off the desk features a monitor stand for a 4K 32” monitor and 2 secondary monitors, A 5.1 surround sound system, in-desk A/C power and USB charging, a custom USB 3.0 Hub and an easy access wireless charger, a large drawer for all the random stuff I keep by my side, a shelf for a virtual reality headset with a place to store its cable, adjustable legs (sit-stand desk), and with all this stuff cable management is a high priority. It’s a lot to pack into a desk.
For this build I designed 2 different styles of cable guides and clips to effectively manage over 20 cables running through the desk. A custom USB hub is another 3D printed part that made it into the final desk. During the process of the build I also designed and used multiple functional 3D printed tools and attachments. It was quite a build!
It makes a great gaming desk as well. It needed to be very sturdy to support all those graphics cards!

This episode’s featured design is “Stay Vigilant - Remember Chicxulub”
It reminds us to #RememberChicxulub. That’s the name of the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs. It can be hard to see a killer asteroid heralding towards earth. So just remember to stay vigilant! Keep your eyes to the skys! Promote asteroid impact awareness. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!
It’s serious but it’s also a joke… NASA and other agencies are constantly scanning space for large dangerous objects and the likelihood of impact in the next few hundred years is LOW. GOOD NEWS! Great Build. I see we have the same taste in elevating desk solutions and zoom recorders. Granted I went the easy route and just used a 1" thick end grain butcher block countertop from a big box home improvement store for my desk surface. Still it will be a good base for me to continue to build off of now that you've given me a few ideas. Computer sits on a 24u rolling mini rack which keeps everything clean and only 1 sheathed umbilical to the desk proper. Haven't gone all drawer crazy because the ankle biters are still at the age where nothing is safe. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Andrew! Sounds like a quality setup. The store-bought butcher block is a good choice for sure. The prices are reasonable and there are a fair number of wood options. I was looking at those for another project earlier this year. I had originally planned on making some sort of pedestal for the PC, possibly with integrated cooling, but that idea will have to wait for some other day. Thanks for watching. The director's cut of this video should be uploaded Sunday. I go into a lot more detail about the process of making the desk.

Thanks for watching! Glad you like the ideas. I am probably not going to put some of those files up for download until I can make some improvements to the designs. I go over the good and the bad of printed tools in the Director's Cut. I should have that video up by next weekend at the latest.

@@The3DHandyman I look forward to it! Thanks. I work off a 65" 4K TV lol. Not the best solution for my old eyes, as my range of focus is less fluid than it used to be. ;) Added work space doesn't help if you have trouble focusing on it. Maybe I should find a curved screen.

@@ryanmacewen511 I watched this video last week and think you might like it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-burNkdZG0Bs.html The contrast, brightness, and refresh rate aren't great on some TVs and I find monitors in general to be preferable. It's also important to get the right viewing distance. When I planed out this desk I actually made it less deep than my old desk so that I could sit 3 inches closer to my main screen. This allows me to see the details in the 4k screen much better than before. This is a nice chart to tell you how much resolution is worth it for your setup: blogs-images.forbes.com/kevinmurnane/files/2017/10/chart_Rtings.com_.jpg

How about pulleys for retractable peripheral wires for the sake of wire management? Or making a modular extension panel for every port a pc could have on the back?

There are a few active projects at the moment. The PC case is unfortunately still in the concept phase, but it is coming. At least I have a place to put it now! The tablet tray is solid enough to wobble the whole desk rather than wobble itself. The arm that it sits on is pretty solid.

Sure Ed. The chair is called the "Focal Upright - Locus Chair" I got it on sale years ago. Otherwise, its pretty expensive. I like to use it for a few hours a day. Beyond that, my legs start to get tired of the continuous leaning. That said, my back loves it.

Hey The 3D Handyman what kind of gear you got here, like the monitors, VR glasses, and your PC mods for rendering your ideas since I am trying to be a creator myself? Do you use VR gloves to create as well?
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 3 года назад
Hi Edwin. The monitors are actually some old stock Dell's. I got these years ago, anything new will be better. For your main monitor I would recommend anything with an sRGB color pallet and 4K. Accurate colors are key. I picked up a Valve index earlier this year expecting to be working on VR experiences. This year has not gone as planned tho and so far its only been used to play Half-Life Alyx. Hopefully next year I can get back to making content. The headset is one of the best I've ever used as far as resolution brightness and framerate. It is comfortable for long wear. I don't have any other VR peripherals. Right now things have shifted away from VR towards product design. I should have some videos coming out on the whole process of designing a product from start to finish in the coming months. There are 3 2070s in my rig that do all the GPU rendering for the channel. Average render times are about 1 minute per frame. At this point a 3090 and a good knowledge of Unreal 4 might get you renders as good as mine in real time. Much more efficient. CPU is a 9900k but if I were to build a rig today I would probably go with AMD because there are more PCI express lanes on their chips. Redshift is my rendering software at the moment but I used Vray for years and intel is generally better for that software. What sort of content are you wanting to create?

@@The3DHandyman Hey brother thank you so much for the response and insights for the build and software are going to be so useful, along with how you roll with your gear set up. In my arsenal I have my surface pro, a little 17 inch Seiki TV monitor and my old, old, old Dell Desk top which I still love. I am blessed to have those things and space to modify them to a temp set-up as I practice and envision what I could build it into and growing my skill sets too. I love your channel and got into it from your mask making series which is great. I have ideas on creating my own a series of masks and accessories as an entrepreneur, I may not have the building tools or a 3d printer but if I can see it then I can design and build right. So, I am kind of right in that field with you, I sometimes feel like I am back in shop class trying to figure how to make stuff and get it to work, lol. It is great also to see a guy health minded about folks taking care of each other wearing a mask, so that is awesome. My tip if it helps is get those tool makers you use or stores to sponsor some of your videos, heck lead a zoom video project with kids who are under served and get the sponsors to provide the essentials needed to complete the it with parents. Because a blessing of learning is having the hard skills with tools as well as soft skills with technology to create the idea in your mind and reality. If I create content, I would like to do something inspiring for others along with learning skills and bringing ideas to life to inspire other creators in different skill sets and building unity and community. Once again thank you so much please let me know if I can help certainly will have ton more questions for you and you are awesome keep shinning brother and God bless you.

Thanks for the complements, Edwin! I hope that I was able to help some people with the mask designs. Currently a hospital grade mask is in the works now that I have a resin printer at my disposal. I should upload a video about it sometime in the next month or so. It's been slow going. I grew up in a fairly poor area where a lot of kids had nothing or close to it. Community service is a real joy for me. I would like to start a maker space at some point to teach essential skills but that may be a long way off. Until then, I will help where I can. Dells are fine machines much of the time. If you are lucky enough to get one that does not have or develop bulging/leaking capacitors they tend to last a long time. A few years ago I managed a renderfarm with 20 XPS 8300s with i7-2600s. They aren't very powerful by todays standards but they still cranked out over 100,000 for my animations. My channel is a bit small at the moment for sponsors, but hopefully I will get there one of these years. Thanks for your thoughts!

@@tuganerf Thanks, Gil. Congrats on graduating at an awkward time! I graduated with a degree in game design in early 2009 after the financial collapse. Somehow I got a job in someones garage making racing games and now I'm doing video shoots from helicopters and designing amusement park attractions (both of which I will do videos on some day soon). My unsolicited advice to you is follow your creativity, don't get discouraged, and don't be afraid to work after hours on what you really love.

Why in the world do people still put the PC on the desktop?
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 3 года назад
Reasonable question! The first design put the PC on a separate pedestal that would have given me more desktop space and another drawer unit. Eventually I decided to move it to the top of the desk because it is a Sit-Stand desk. If the case were anywhere else the cables going to 12 devices would need to grow/shrink by up to 28 inches (71cm). I could have incorporated a cable chain into it to feed the cables to the devices effectively but I would have had to buy a lot of new longer cables and that was not in my budget. Thanks for the comment :)
@siskothekid4620
@siskothekid4620 3 года назад
The 3D Handyman nope. Lose the "VR goggle shelf" or drawer that only becomes storage for junk anyways, have a shelf underneath for the PC that moves up and down with the desk. Cables can stay the same. There's nothing you can say to convince me losing 25% of your desktop is good design. Name one professional editing studio or VFX department that does this, we don't.
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 3 года назад
The under the desk mount was considered but would have added a lot of complexity to the woodworking side of the build. Weight requirements for the legs were also an issue when adding anything at all. The junk drawer was a must have for me. My old setup had up to 100% of the open desktop space devoted to all the stuff that sits in my drawer now. I had to cut a second drawer from the design to save only 15lbs. The high end professional studios that I have seen also generally have rows of desks where you have access to the back side of the workstations. For me the desk is pressed up against the wall and I want to keep it there. Accessing the back of the PC is therefore easier if its more exposed. I also like to look in the window, personally. As far as professional shops are concerned, I have worked at two that had PCs on the desks. Sometimes budget requirements force less than perfect setups. PCs close to the floor also happen to collect a lot more dust. This isn't an issue in pro shops that are cleaned by a janitorial service once or twice every week... I'm not that fastidious. I'm not trying to convince you that you should want my ultimate workstation, I'm just explaining the thought process that brought me to what you see here. What's your ultimate workstation?
@siskothekid4620
@siskothekid4620 3 года назад
The 3D Handyman if you're concerned with weight, why did you use all that unnecessary 3/4" wood as structure that you just painted BLACK anyways? Laminating wood with wood? Facing a 3/4" drawer face with another 3/4" piece? I know you're really proud of your "ultimate" workstation, but it isn't in any designer/engineers eyes. I can't even imagine the hassle trying to move it, unplugging and taking everything off. Besides, you admitted my original suspicion, it's just because you like to "look in the window" and see the pretty lights that also serve no purpose. I WORK at my WORKstation. It has a stand/sit configuration, made entirely out of aluminum and steel, adjustable shelves above the monitors with adjustable LED lights underneath, a laminated wood desktop, I can add or remove more drawers and shelves, it can support over 500 pounds, has the machine underneath and it's... ON WHEELS. Nothing gets stale quicker than a desk that never moves.
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 3 года назад
The vast majority of the wood is 1/2" plywood with only a few 3/4" structural pieces to bulk it up in some places. I like the look of Baltic Birch end grain in some situations but in the preliminary renders of the desk, I wasn't loving it. The ply was also CP grade which has a lot of blemishes in it and is really only suitable for paint/stain/lamination. The 1/2" top side would barely support itself and would sag heavily with 100+ lbs of gear on it. That was the main reasoning for the thick lamination. The other reason was that I had a lot of reclaimed hard maple that I wanted to use for something. It sounds like you have a very nice desk! I watched a video that employed a similar concept. My limited metal working tools are really only suitable for light work, so wood was my only realistic option for this build. Did you laminate it with plastic or wood veneer? I considered using a piece of Ebony Macassar that I already have for the top side but thought that it would be way to gaudy. With all those LED lights underneath your desk, it sounds like you like pretty lights too... and I'm not talking about the musical artist. Thanks for reminding me this song existed! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sk9XYQMRiLY.html
