In this video, we show a time-lapse recording of a dining room banquette being built. This provides a good indication of what is involved in a project like this. We've added some tips to help with the project if you're planning to try it out yourself. If you have any questions on this build, please leave us a comment below and we'll get back to you asap.
Our Gear (please note that these are affiliate links - buying through these links will help us out with the channel a bit):
Camera: amzn.to/2HI1CJM
Microphone: amzn.to/2Fus1u1
Mic to Camera Patch Cable: amzn.to/2BQX5V8
Step by step:
1. Measure the size you want the bench to be and mark your baseboards. Cut your baseboards at this point so you can remove them. If you don't have a took to cut them, you'll have to remove the whole baseboard and then cut it. I used a rotary bit tool and a chisel to cut mine in place.
2. Remove the baseboards and set them aside for reinstallation later.
3. Measure and cut 2x4s for the wall portion of the bottom frame. Remember to allow 3/4" for the plywood panels. Screw the 2x4s directly into the studs and wall footer. Use spacing behind them if necessary (I had to in order to match the wainscoting depth).
4. Cut the 2x4 spacers for the depth. I made ours 21" deep so our spacers were 21" - 3" (two 2x4s) - 3/4" (plywood panel) - 3/4" (trim/baseboard) for a spacer length of 16 1/2". Screw these spacers into the back part of the frame.
5. Measure cut and install the 2x4s for the front part of the lower frame. You may have to leave a space for a vent as I had to do in the video.
6. Measure and cut 2x4 risers. I wanted a 20" total height, including cushions without compression (this decision was based on a table height of 30 1/2"). We made 4" cushions so our bench is 16" total height. This made our risers 16" - 7" (two 2x4s, long side) - 3/4" (top plywood) for a riser length of 8 1/4".
7. Tack the risers in place. I had a spacer on each corner and never left more than a two foot gap anywhere on the frame. This should be sufficient to support the weight of the bench.
8. Measure and cut the parts for the top of the frame. Your spacer length should match that of the bottom. As with the risers, I never left more than a two foot gap with the spacers. This gives added support to the seating as the top plywood will rest on these.
9. Measure, cut, and install the plywood panels. I measured mine up and had them cut it at Home Depot when I bought the plywood. For the top, I put a two inch piece across the back of each section, along the wall. This gives a surface to attach the piano hinges to.
10. After the panels were on, I drilled 1" diameter holes in the top to allow for lifting.
11. Install trim on the bench. My trim extends up to cover the edge of the plywood on the top so when the benches are closed, the top sits down inside.
12. I added wainscoting to the bench at this point.
13. I routered all the exposed edges, then sanded everything.
14. Finally, I cleaned everything up and added the primer.
We made the cushions by sewing heavy-duty fabric. We cut the foam from an IKEA foam mattress using an electric knife. We had underestimated the cost, time, and effort involved in making the cushions. This is something to keep in mind if you`re considering this project. We didn`t record video of the cushion work, but we still have one piece of foam left and may record a demo video to give an indication of what`s required.

Hey Jason: I used your video, pretty-much step-by-step to build a similar window-seat base in our dining room/kitchen area. Loved the simplicity of it. Everything worked out great. We're going to have the cushions fabricated by an upholsterer. but I did everything else myself. My project involved working with a lot of 45-degree angles, so a little different than yours, but it was so incredibly helpful to be able to watch your project unfold in time-lapse because seeing a video like that allowed me to have confidence in the soundness of doing it that way by seeing actual results. Saved me a lot of time too.Thanks again and congrats to you and your wife on the new addition to your family. P.S. If you like, I can send you a photo of the window seat if you let me know how you'd like to receive it. Cheers!

Ty this was so helpful! No one else does it this way and its hard to understand the scope of a project when seeing it in detail as it progresses vs. a fast full run through. YES please do the cushion video. I was horrified at difficulty of making outdoor pillows to fit an odd size loveseat. The fabric was very thick n slippery and foam ridiculously expensive.
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 5 лет назад
Ha. In hindsight, it would have been great to do a cushion video. It was a big job making the cushions and we hope they last for many years. I don't think we be making a video unless these ones die. The online fabric store on RU-vid was where we learned to make them. Hope that helps.

Handyverse what type of plywood did you use? I'd like to do it this weekend.
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 6 лет назад
Just 3/4" spruce plywood. It only needs to be finished on one side and if you're covering it with wainscoting and using cushions, it doesn't even need a great finished side. Just make sure you get as flat a piece as possible. That will help! Good luck and if you have any other questions, just let us know.

Really interested in doing this project myself! What is the thickness of your plywood? Would you have a link to the exact type of plywood you used? Wouldn't want to buy one that isn't sturdy, or that wouldn't warp! Thanks :) Awesome video!
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 6 лет назад
Honestly, I just used the cheapest, 3/4" plywood I could find. I didn't even bother get one that had a finished side since I knew we were going to be using cushions on the top and I was covering the faces with trim and wainscoting. Plywood tends to be pretty warp resistant so as long as you make sure it's flat when you buy it, you should be ok. Good luck with the project and if you have any other questions, we'd be happy to help out!

@DarkHorseRowing 7 лет назад
This may be a big ask, but do you have a tool list for the tools used for this project?
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 7 лет назад
Hmmm, no official list, but it was a pretty basic project from a tool perspective, especially since I drew up the panels beforehand and had them cut at Home Depot. Going from memory: - mitre saw (for cutting the 2x4s) - cordless drill (for pilot holes and driving screws) - hammer (both for driving nails and coaxing some of the 2x4s into place!) - spokeshave (for trimming up the top pieces, making sure they fit down into place without rubbing. A plane or a lot of sanding could be used instead) - belt sander and a random orbital sander - router (for rounding the edges once everything was in place) - caulking gun (for finish work) - pry bar (for removing the old baseboard) - carpenter's square (for squaring things up as best I could) - level (the floor is not quite level, so I compensated for it during the build) That's all I can think of right now. I didn't have a Kreg jig at the time but that would have been helpful to make pocket holes for securing everything together. I just drove screws in on an angle instead. Good luck!

Did you made the cushions as well? Or you bought them?
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 5 лет назад
My wife made the cushions. She sewed the casings and we cut up an IKEA mattress to foam the cushions themselves. A big job but they turned out great!

The only thing unrealistic about this video was the having wood cut at Home Depot part... The wood cutting machine at my local Home Depot has been out of order since 2019 LOL Super helpful, thanks!

Sorry for the late response; just getting through some older comments now. I just toe-nailed screws into them to hold them in place

What were the rough dimensions of the space you built this bench in? Thanks!

The room is 8.5 x 10 feet. The bench itself is 8.5 wide to fill one wall and the sides extend out 4 feet from that wall. Thanks for watching!

@@Handyverse Thanks for providing dimentions. My nook is 6' wide by 4' deep so I will make just one long bench across the long wall. Great video!

I made it but, unfortunately, it was before we started the channel and I didn't record it. I did make an overview video of it though: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ka3PfOue21k.html

What did you use to attach the wainscoting to your bench?
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 7 лет назад
+Dennis Ginser just wood glue. They're short enough and the surfaces flat enough that they stuck really well.

I hope this isn't out of line, but how much did this cost you approximately in supplies
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 7 лет назад
+Krystin Ormsbee no worries, not out of line at all! It was a few months ago so we don't remember the exact numbers, but it was about $200 for the bench materials and the cushions cost us close to $400. We bought a foam mattress from IKEA and cut it up for the foam, then bought high quality fabric to make the covers. We're hoping that gives us good longevity for the cushions.

Suzanne actually made the cushions. We used the foam from a double mattress we picked up at IKEA and Suzanne sewed the covers. You could go without cushions if you made the bench a little higher and used better plywood. Good luck!

Hi, im trying to do literally the same nook layout, two questions, can you share the depth and height of the seats, also did you screw anything into the floor? Im trying to avoid any holes into the floor if at all possible
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 5 лет назад
I made the bench 16" high but we also are using 4" cushions on top. I was aiming for 18" high seats in total and that's about what we got when you sit on and compress the cushions. If you aren't using cushions, I would make the bench itself 18" high. Note that I based those numbers on our table height of 30.5". If you have a higher or lower table height, you might want to adjust accordingly. I made the depth of our bench 21". This works well if you are planning to use pillows at the back but is too deep without pillows (makes for a sore back in a hurry). If you expand the description of the video, I've added a lot more info there. I didn't screw into the floor itself except for one screw on one corner. We're in a 65 year old house and the floor wasn't completely level; I had to tack down a corner to prevent movement. Good luck with your project! We love ours and get a ton of use out of it.

How high is your bench from the top to the floor? I'm worried about the bench being too low for a table.
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 7 лет назад
+Dennis Ginser our bench is 16" from the top to the floor. We then have 4" thick cushions on top. It works well with our table height of 30 1/2".

@Handyverse
@Handyverse 6 лет назад
Siddiqa Shuborna I don't remember exactly, but I believe it was around $200 for the bench itself. The cushions were the most expensive part; we spent close to $400 on those between the foam, the fabric, and the batting. Thanks for watching!

Are those 2 by 4 s at the beginning??
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 5 лет назад
Yup. I used 2x4s for the whole framing. I probably could've used 2x3s along the floor and for the upright parts, but I just used what I had.

Beautiful! What was the height and depth? Thanks!
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 7 лет назад
+Chris Fraser Thanks! The height is 16" since we made 4" thick cushions (we were going for 18" high when seated on the cushion) . This is for a table height of 30.5". The depth is 21" and is a good depth for having a cushion or pillow behind the back. You could go with a shallower depth (say 18") if you weren't planning to use any cushioning. Good luck with it if you try it!

nice job but I think I would have left out the window side box for more freedom of movement
@Handyverse
@Handyverse 7 лет назад
That was something we talked about before we did it. We ultimately decided to go with the "U" to maximize seating area. We're happy we went that route as it works really well for us (plus the kittehs would be terribly upset if they didn't have their window seat!). Thanks for watching.
