In this video I’ll show you how to build a DIY gravel patio and create a gas fire pit seating are with POLYWOOD chairs. I’ll also show how I created a D.G. (decomposed granite) and gravel pathway with steel landscape edging. Well at this is how I built mine and it’s working great! In addition to the video I’ve outlined the entire process below and will keep it updated with answers and explanations to frequently asked questions.
PATIO
1. Excavate down 6 inches.
2. Add rich soil to the boarder for planting later.
3. Cover patio area with landscaping fabric.
4. Add steel edging or plastic bender board to the patio boarder. A taut string tied to two stakes helps to mark any strait lines. I used this for the pathway edge.
5. Add 4 inches of road base (crushed rock) to the entire patio are, then level and compact it.
6. Next I added one inch of decomposed granite and compacted that. This could be the final step if you want want a D.G. patio, but I used this layer as a base for the final layer.
7. Finish the patio with a 1” layer of gravel for which I used my personal favorite - Sonoma Gold Pathfines. Pathfines hold in place
better than pea gravel, but they don’t get muddy like D.G. Does. This stuff is awesome.
My pathfines source: www.gohasties....
CHAIRS
These POLYWOOD Adirondack chairs might just be my favorite part of this patio. POLYWOOD makes amazing outdoor furniture out of landfill-bound, and ocean-bound plastics! Not only are they comfortable and beautiful, but they are also extremely durable and come with a 20 year warranty, yes 20 YEARS! Oh, and free delivery in the U.S.! I highly recommend these chairs.

FIRE PIT
You’re probably wondering where I got this fire pit - I was fortunate to find it as a damaged item on Overstock a got it for a major discount. I wish you luck in your search.
I knew I wanted a gas fire pit, but it was way to expensive to plumb gas all the way to this spot, so I opted for the propane fire bowl which is a delicious I am very pleased with, especially after concealing the gas line in PVC pipe that I painted with Gorilla glue then covered with gravel. I concealed the tank under a hollow plastic rock that I found in the irrigation section of my local nursery.

FAQs:
Ask and you shall receive
Q: Why all of the layers? Are they really necessary?
A: For my space and vision these layers were the best way to achieve my goals. The base rock layer is important for stability and drainage. As for the layers above that - I I stated in the video you could finish with the DG layer if you want a DG patio, but in that case I would apply a 2” layer of DG. You could also skip the DG and just do a 2” layer of pathfines, but they cost twice as much as the DG which was the main reason I did 1” DG first.

Can I till the yard with the bark in it to get it prepped for a project like this or do I have to rake and remove all the old bark and weeds first?

You prepped as though you were going to lay pavers. Why all the road base and sand if you're using gravel? I also have lots of roots, so was just gonna lay some weed barrier and cover with 2-3" of crushed gravel. Any downsides to that?

Great job! Draining well is so important in our area. How will you protect /clean the fire pit in offseason? Just wondering if there are drain holes or a cover for it.

Thank you! Great question. It’s completely open on the bottom for drainage and I also keep it covered when it rains.

Never heard of Crush and Run before...THANK YOU! I'm working on a DIY renovation, originally done 30 years ago. It's a large yard and huge task and doing it as frugally as possible is almost as important as making it beautiful, dog-friendly and long lasting. Edit: Is there anything you'd have done differently? Another thing...does any of that much smaller gold top gravel you use, make it into the house by way of your dog's paws???

I’m happy with it all and would change nothing, which I’m pleasantly surprised by, but also I’ve been doing this for a bit so I learned most lessons from previous projects. My dog does not track it in.

How long after watering the DG did you wait before compacting the DG? Thanks.
@urbanfarmstead
@urbanfarmstead 2 года назад
Just about 5-10 minutes, and be sure not to over saturate it which will create a sticky muddy mess.
@bonsummers2657
@bonsummers2657 2 года назад
@@urbanfarmstead Thanks. I'm gaining my experience on the variable details of DG installation, because I'm in the landscape biz. Although it seems that compaction factors depend on the grain blend of the particular DG (some different DG's have somewhat different sticky/clodding potentials/characteristics) as to the appropriate delay in time from watering to compacting. For full compaction there's got to be full saturation. And for non-sticky/non-cloddy compaction there has to be sufficient dry time so the moistened DG won't stick to the compactor-surface, whether a tamper, a roller, or a motorized plate compactor. But, in contrast, for a counter example, roadbase normally won't stick even if it's compacted immediately after watering in any amount. Even a lite watering will make some DG sticky/cloddy to the compactor surface if compacted 'soon' after watering, but again, if the full depth of DG isn't moistened, it won't fully compact compared to being fully moistened. Thanks again for sharing on this forum :)
@bonsummers2657
@bonsummers2657 2 года назад
… and, time to compaction after watering can be however long it takes to not be sticky, typically within 20 hours 'at most', can be much less depending on the grain-characeristics. The minimum dry time depends on the particular DG.

Hey mate, thanks for your video. I was super excited to get a similar DIY project underway for my backyard, but I've become concerned about laying the roadbase and decomposed granite without first ensuring that I have proper drainage for the yard, as we can get some pretty heavy rain occasionally and I've had parts of the yard pool with water a few times. I couldn't see any stormwater channels or pits in your video. What sort of surface drainage do you rely on? Did you do any grading to the base earth when you excavated and/or do you have any subsurface drainage like an agi pipe for the area? Curious about how you managed drainage and if you've encountered any issues re excess stormwater. Thanks again, AJ.
