How to Build a DIY Trailer Ramp for under $50 bucks

This is a video of my trailer ramp & gate for my tandem axle, 4' by 13' utility trailer. I used 1.5" square tubing for the frame and some heavy duty expanded metal grate for the ramp.
The whole project took me about 4-6 hours spread over a few evenings and it has served me very well so far.

Just found your channel, awesome video, I would like to do same with my trailer over here in the West of Scotland! What type of welder do you have? I'm looking towards getting a mig for my wee workshop.
@ChrisOfAllTrades
@ChrisOfAllTrades 6 лет назад
Well Johnnystrang74. I'm glad you found it too. my friends are actually going over there this summer and are renting a place for a month. not sure where. they're thinking of possibly moving there from canada and stay for a year or longer. anyways, about the welder, i just used my old (50 year old) sears stick welder for that project. in the meantime I got me a used mig welder for $250 and i much prefer it but for heavier welds like these ramps i would still use the stick welder. i find i can place thicker beads quicker. in any case i hope things work out for your shop; there's just nothing like having your own tools to make/fix your own stuff. thanks for watching and i hope you stick around.
@johnnystrang74
@johnnystrang74 6 лет назад
Your friends will love it here, I'd recommend they take a week and tour the NC500 route, taking in the Bealach na Ba' pass and sampling the Whisky straight from the distillery! Re the welder, I've got a small inverter stuck welder which is awesome for repairs, but looking at Sealy migs for the new shop as I feel will be a better all rounder general welding fabrication. Keep the videos coming!

Title should read $50 trailer ramp with $20, 000 worth of equipment.....in a fully enclosed DIY shop. Better equipped than a small commercial shop. A quick count of tools. Welder Lathe Drill press Metal cutter Multimeter Clamps Torches Plasma cutter Spray gun Welding table Various grinders Vice Fully enclosed shop.

Do you want some tissues? Years of investment in tools yields continuous pay off. You also don't need 3/4 of this equipment to build this - Some things are just easier to use if you have them available. I've built full sets of steel recovery bumpers with sub $200 welder and a $10 angle grinder.

Better check Modern day prices, 2021. Expanded metal 3/4" flat is $139/sheet and I made my ramp 5'x5' using 1.5 x 1.5" angle iron 45' was $85. and some 10" hinges $14ea.

For anyone building a ramp, the wire mesh in this video was welded on backwards. The overlap of the mesh should point up (towards the bed of the trailer when the ramp is down) so that when you are going up or down the ramp you have traction. Otherwise it's slippery when wet. It's an easy thing to overlook.

im in the process of building a trailer, haven't got to the gate yet but for my vertical corner supports ive taken some old steel bed frames(the kind with 4 pieces of angle iron rivetted together. used an and grinder and drill to get the rivets out(that parts a pain) cut em into 3'6" sections, and mounted to the trailer frame with brackets. i figure ill use more bed frames to build a gate, people throw those out all the time. i found drilling holes and bolting it all together works fine, not having a welder

Great craftsmanship! One thing to think about…that tailgate will act like a parachute when going down the road at highway speeds. I like to build mine a bit narrower so that if the load permits, I can lay the gate down flat in the bed of the trailer. I nearly ran out of gas on a long trip with an empty trailer! One more thing for the future, instead of the long pieces to support the gate in the up position, build a bracket at the rear of the bed rails with a pin or a spring latch to secure the gate. Looks great!

only change I would make is the last thing you built, the bar that goes from the trailer to the ramp, I would weld the "bolt" to the bar. It does not need to be free to move (or lose). the bar has enough flex in it to move back and forth without damaging it to allow the bolt to slide in and out of the hole. Then you just pull the cotter pin, pull the arm/bolt out of the ramp, and put the pin back in the bolt so you don't lose it.

Nice video, craftsmanship and tools. I watched this because I want to do the same and I was making plans. Square tubing is stronger than angle, but most designs use angle on the edges so the expanded metal can be sandwiched. If laid flat, tubing in middle would be below expanded metal and angle on sides would be on top making it sandwich the expanded metal. Could you just weld the hinge directly to the back of the trailer instead of using that extra piece of angle? What do you think?
@ChrisOfAllTrades

I couldn't weld the hinge to the trailer directly because the material of the trailer bed is wood.
