Given how many close fits you have here, have you discovered the joy that is self-adhesive UHMW tape? I keep it on hand in a few thicknesses. When you have a couple of pieces of metal that you think might interfere, stick a chunk of the tape there. It will provide a self-lubricating wear layer that both prevents damage and serves as a witness mark so you know if contact is happening. It's also useful when you want metal to slide against other metal with relatively little friction, but there isn't enough friction to justify a more complex bearing.

@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 2 года назад
@@SuperfastMatt when you use that stuff I have a tip. It's awesome but the self-adhesive part is kind of sarcastic unless you acetone clean the paint and heat up both the thing you're going to stick it to and the UHMW strip with a heat gun slightly before you adhere them. It makes a significant difference in how well they stick. If you're going to skip one of those and cut corners skip the cleaning more than the heating.

If I’m reading it right, the FIA record for 500cc unsupercharged wheel driven cars is only 138 mph, which doesn’t sound like a lot when you say it quickly. (As an aside, some of the 500cc supercharged records are held by a 1930s MG!) Those are probably both direction averages though, which makes things quite a bit more complicated, and I’m not so sure speed week events do that 2 way running, anyway.

Something that you may find interesting is that running a mechanical water pump actually robs a fair amount of HP from the engine. It could potentially be worth it to explore the idea of running an electronic water pump to cool the engine off of a slightly larger light weight lithium battery(only larger if you decide to not run the rectifier for your runs). This method is newly being used in professional motocross where it’s gaining 3-5hp in 250cc single cylinders(this is with the little bit of extra draw from the stator). I imagine you could pick up a somewhat significant amount of hp for a very small amount of added weight. Especially with how much water is being pushed through that motor and the rectifier disconnected. Usually the impeller is just removed from the water pump and the shaft seal remains.

Today I learned "Engineering Intuition" means "Add more struts". Also, if you're contemplating disconnecting your battery from its charger at high RPM, you may want to consider the weight and charge/discharge efficiencies of replacing the battery with a small super capacitor bank. You will need to jumpstart the engine from something else, but once it does start, it will run significantly better than with a lossy Lead-Acid charge/discharge cycle. Works Cited: My riding mower.

A lot of drag racer engines in some of the more "street" classes are cooled by an "ice box," which is essentially what you have already, just add ice. They run this "ice water" into the engine block. Doing that and eliminating the heat exchanger will be way more efficient. This gives you another 40 or 50 degrees lower water temp on the cool side.

Just my 2 cents: The OEM Regulator/Rectifier will be a diode shunt regulator, wasting some 30-60W of Power once the Battery is full. If you care, either buy one of the MOSFET Series-Regulators (less power losses) or place the relay between one of the three input phases from the alternator. The latter (cutting one of the phases) is sometimes done in "professional" racing. BTW nice project :)

In front of the driver cage, there would ideally be a 'crush zone'. This implies not using simple longitudinal girders, but an angled-element (foldable) design that can smoothly crush for a more comfortable crash. Advanced designs would limit peak deacceleration force. Yes, acknowledge that it'll be run in an open area, but still... If there's a tree within 200 miles it'll eventually crash into it.

Q: what do people do when they’re not in the garage? A: they’re at the Petersen Museum staving off range anxiety.

Something I’ve heard from race car builders like you, one time someone said how it takes 3 times as long as you plan it, I know how Kevin Talbot didn’t plan for a frame to sit for 2 plus years to now basically be complete. Life Motorsport with their pikes peak cars… The point is, a goal will get you closer to accomplishing it then not one at all.

I just know if I was your neighbour, I'd be obnoxious, we would yell a bit and then end up having way to many beers together and bitch about things. Love it. Cheers mate. 🍻❤😁

As a guy who has never really had any game in the garage, I usually drive my hobby cars, go for long walks and I've recently taken up bicycle riding, for the first time in almost 30 years.
