Thank you for making this video, you never know how important your videos are to us. You are so clever with the different styles of edging. They are all beautiful. I planned to pay someone to build my pond, but I plan to do it myself now. Excited as I am, I know my pond will bring character to my patio.

Hey I'm glad you like it. I picked it up at my local rock yard. It is Mexican Beach Pebble and it comes in several different grades. 3" to 5", 2" to 3", 1" to 2", and 3/8" to 3/4". I typically will pick up a couple bags of each depending on the size of the pond and work in the different grades to help naturalize the edges.

Tip-course sand! Pour liberally over your varied sized gravel, and gently rinse in to both decrese weeds by filling in gaps, and cover the liner even better! Love your rock placement!!!!

Those were excellent ways to hide the liner around the edge. I think I prefer the last method. It looks very random and natural. I also liked the boulder that was placed back about 1-2' on the right-hand side. I'm interested in having 1 bog garden next to and separate from my pond and 1 that is actually part of it (i.e. the water from the pond seeps over into the bog to keep the plants moist/wet). Either of those would also have been a cool edition to finishing the edge. This series is great!

This is true. Most of my clients that use bark around the pond freshen it up every 12 to 18 months by pulling away last years bark and adding new. If in fact you left the bark, it turned to mulch and weeds began to grow in the shallow dirt, weeding would be easy because the liner would keep the weeds from getting a good hold in the earth.

Hey Lyndi that's a great question. Installing UV filters below ground can be tricky. Most of the manufacturers don't want to you install them below grade, I do know that! We have on occasion installed a UV below grade in tricky situations. It's probably not a good idea to recommend an installation not recommended by the manufacturers. I don't want to make any enemies!

Great series! Have any suggestions for hiding an in-ground UV light? We installed it in-line with the shut-off valves exposed (and obviously so we could get to the bulb to change it), but now we have to hide it. We're thinking of building a small deck (platform) to cover it and move as necessary. Any suggestions?

Great series. I am about to rejuvenate a pond in a house I just bought and these videos are invaluable. My main concern however is making the pond safe for the grandkids and our puppy. Do you have any advise on how to make a pond safe without detracting too much from the aesthetics? Thanks.
@ThePondDigger
@ThePondDigger 7 лет назад
The steps and shelves are important for a safety precaution. consider a fence around the pond if you have small grandkids. Have an alarm on the back doors of your house so if the kids venture out back the alarm will make a beep notifying you. Just like safety measures for swimming pools.

These videos are wonderful! I am just in the stage of ground prepping -- getting rid of roots and such. I love seeing the various edging techniques. One question: would it be good to go ahead and use waterfall foam between the coping stones and the liner regardless of the edging technique? It seems like (in my yard situation) dirt could accidentally begin to accumulate with plant and mulch decomposition. Is it a problem to use the foam all around as "insurance" against a wicking type of leak? Thank you for all these great tutorials!

I’m sorry if you’ve already explained this but- what kind of filter is on this pond? Just the skimmer? Does the pump move water from the skimmer into the waterfall? And biological filtration happens naturally on the rocks?
@1065Olivia
@1065Olivia 6 лет назад
Does it not make it very difficult to clean the pond bottom when the pond is all rocked inside? It seems it would make a great place for particles to get trapped... I know they are not cleaned until years later it just seems it would make everything more difficult, especially if a leak ever developed. We are digging our pond now and in previous ponds we have only placed rocks on our ledges. It certainly is beautiful the way you do it.

I keep coming back to this. I can't figure out the best way to do my pond's edging. I was thinking of going more informal but the shape might require a more formal edging... The pond is basically a rectangular "hole" in a concrete yard, with the waterfall coming off from a back retaining wall (sort of "spilling" through it"). There is no step inside the pond to place rocks on, it is a sheer 4 foot drop. I was thinking of overhanging some type of flagstone 2-3" over the water to hide the liner. Any tips?
@ThePondDigger
@ThePondDigger 8 лет назад
Go formal edges on the formal pond. Use large flagstone or slate and hang over the edge 3 to 4 inches.
@ItsAlleged
@ItsAlleged 8 лет назад
Thank you so much! I think that's the best idea. I feel that if I try to make a rectangle look natural with bigger stones it will still turn out looking unnatural and just messy.
