Hey Gang! Welcome to the channel, today we're doing something a little different and that's building a Floating Platform bed out of regular framing lumber from the local big box store! This build is a QUEEN size bed, but if you have something else, all you have to do is measure the length and width of your mattress and match your cuts accordingly! We thought this would be a fun project to tackle and hopefully it inspires & helps some of you build your own version!
If at any point the instructions are unclear then feel free to refer back to the video to clear things up. If that doesn't help please leave us a comment with any questions you have and we'll try to respond ASAP!
MATERIALS NEEDED (Bed Frame)
12 - 2x6x8ft
8 - 1x4x8ft (for the slats)
2 - 4x8 sheets of Masonite
Box of #9 3 in. Construction Screws
Box of 1 1/2 in. Construction Screws
Combination Square (definitely optional but inexpensive & will help a TON)
STEP 1: Pick your best Three 2x6 from the pile and those will be your lip pieces. Really try to look at the grain of the wood & see if you can get them to match (This will help later)
STEP 2: Cut Three 2x6 at 80in. // Two 2x6 at 65 1/2 in. // 8 1x4 at 65 1/2 in.
Now Pre-drill for your 3 screw holes on the end of the 65 1/2 in. boards 3/4 of an inch from the edge. Lay your pieces flat on the ground (use your scraps if you need to) and screw the frame together
STEP 3: @ 3/4in. on both sides, mark the end of your slats for predrilling and drill the holes. Now cut a scrap piece of 1x4 to 7 7/8in. This will be your spacer for the slats. Screw in your first 2 slats on each side of the frame. Then using your spacer block screw in the rest of the slats with 2 screws on each point touching the 2x6
STEP 4: Measure 2 1/2 inches from each corner of the frame (on top of the slats) this will give you a guide line for your lip to follow later on. Now it's time to cut the Miters on the lip pieces (this step is optional if you like a butt joint look better) Mark your cuts to be where the 2 1/2 in. lines meet at the beginning of this step, that will be the short side of the miter.
STEP 5: Go around and measure in 1 3/4 in. of the slats and make a mark, then pre-drill on those lines at a slight angle. Secure your 2 Lip Pieces using the holes you just drilled from underneath, starting with the 1 1/2 in. screws on each edge. Use the existing space between the boards to measure for your final cut. When the Joints look good, remove the lip and pre drill your holes at slight angle like before (We had 6) And then once again from the bottom secure the lip!
STEP 6: Cut Two 2x6 at 68in. // Two 2x6 at 41 1/2 in.
Assemble the Base using the same technique in STEP 2.
STEP 7: Cut 4 scrap 2x6 that will fit the gap between the top frame and bottom frame. Pre drill 4 staggered holes and then secure 2 scrap pieces at the headboard end of the bed FIRST. Make sure your two frame pieces are centered before you sink the screws. (Refer to video for assembly of spacer blocks and toe-screwing)
STEP 8: Cut the Masonite! Use your assembled frame to make exact measurements that fit your build best! You're looking for 2 even sheets as shown in the video.
BEFORE WE CONTINUE. Know that how much time you take and attention you pay from here on out will make or break this project so do it right! It's worthit.
STEP 9: SANDING BABY! Get your headphones. Start with 80 Grit and work your way through 120 ending on 220 Grit. Sand every surface that will be seen when the bed is finished. (No need to sand the Bottom Base or Slats)
After you've finished sanding get ride of all of the left behind dust on the boards. Use a rag or vacuum with a bristle brush.
STEP 10: Apply the Pre-Stain Conditioner. Wipe off any excess left over and let it dry fully for at least 30 minutes, but no more than an hour.
Apply the Stain! Using the foam brush coat your boards with your preferred stain! Let it sink into the wood for a few seconds and then wipe the excess with a rag! LET IT DRY FOR A DAY. If you don't you run the risk of spreading wet stain around with the Poly application and you'll be mad.
STEP 11: Apply the Poly! Using a clean foam brush apply your Poly to the wood. Follow the steps in the video for an amazing finish!
STEP 12: Assembly will differ from room to room so watch how we do it to get some ideas! We designed this to be easily taken apart so if that's what it takes that what it takes! You can RGB strip or not it's up to You!

This is for a queen size bed 60" x 80" Also, we're getting a lot of comments about the price of lumber. We put this video out before the Pandemic and at this time the price was right! We know...lumber prices are crippling right now and everyone's feeling it. Hang in there gang!

So if I was going to do a king sized bed 76” x 80” would I take your 65” measurements to 76+5, which is 81” to get the same kind of set up. Or am I not doing that right because your bed is 60” but your measurements are 65”

It looks amazing!! I was wondering how heavy is the frame? Not necessarily how many pounds it is, but is it extremely difficult to move? And how would it be getting it in a doorway?

@@mr.reliable8123 Great question! It's definitely going to be a heavy one! I would definitely be making one of these inside the room it was going into!!! Don't even want to attempt to figure how to get that into the house! 😃

THE FINEST DETAIL I noticed is where you signed & dated the project and where it was built! My Daddy “ran on ahead of me” 23 years ago & most or all of his creations or upgrades before he passed away, he signed and dated! The simplest things now with my Dad’s signature & dates written on them are my most prized possessions to this day!!! One of my sons lives in Central, La., and we have adopted that practice early on about signing & dating things…… the years fly by but seeing those brings us right back to the time & place each item was done!!! Great form !

Took me about 8 hours but I’m finally done! Design is great, instructions were really easy to follow along, and the bed is incredibly sturdy. To anyone considering building this, if your not insistent on the varnished finish. You can use a dark stain with polyurethane in it and (with a nice sand) your good to go.

When I stain wood and even with heavy grain such as oak, I use gel stain mixed with the reg stain (Usually to get my desired color) Add mineral spirits to my sponge brush and slowly glide it on for no bubbles. The mineral spirit will cause it to lay flat, yet goes on thick for coverage. Then I poly it also with 2-3 coats with some mineral spirits on my sponge. Me and the hubs made a frame for our bathroom mirror and i stained it. Looks professional.

@@just_a_guy13 no, those are overly good people to the point it could make them a bad person instead. Yes, there’re some people who are like that, and didn’t get into the wrong side of that statement, but most of the people who say that are overly good people to the point it makes them a bad person. For example, imagine if that person had a kid, they were eating and the kid didn’t like the food. They tell their kid “there’re starving people out there who would love to have that food. So eat it right now and don’t waste it”. Yes, there’re starving people out there, and it’s sad, but they’re not you. I was watching a video once, where some guy saw a meme about this exact situation, and he mocked the people who say that by saying “haha, remember, just because there’re people who have it worse than you, means that you’re never, ever allowed to feel uncomfortable or that you’re in a bad place”, and he’s right

Love the build, I think the star was the square and it's utility in the hands of an experienced tradesman. Pocket holes done earlier and the assembly sanded after piece sanding could have the miter outer corner neatened up and micro rounded for ankle protection. Some discrete rubber pad feet would stop any rocking on an unevenly tiled floor and for tech level masters a hidden induction charger installed from the bottom of the capping board would allow for a phone to be placed there and charge while you sleep.

Thank you very much for this video. My ten year old son built his last week (with some guidance and assistance from me) and it came out great! I can't thank you enough for all the details, recommendations, and tips. We made his for a full size, but all-in-all your guidance is spot-on. Once again, thank you so much!

I was a pretty diesel skateboarder when I was young and this harkened me back to building ramps with my father. Unfortunately, he passed when I was reaching my prime, but those boxes and ramps kept it alive. Thanks for the video.

This is absolutely amazing!! If you don't mind, I am saving this because my family & I have moved to another state & decided to get rid of our present beds (4 beds, to be exact) to making moving a lot easier! We saved an extra trip from San Antonio to Baton Rouge! So actually, if my husband & I can build our bed frames, instead of buying new ones, we can save quite a grip, I believe! This plan for this particular bed looks so much easier to build! Thanks for sharing!!!

The enthusiasm of the young man and the smile of the father to him, just precious! Now, the project: nice bed and easy to follow instructions; it looks great! The one thing that totally does not match the craftsmanship of the bed making is those lights … you guys need to watch some LED lights installations and best way to hide the lights and just let the glow be the star of the show. Best of luck to you both!

@Ainson84
@Ainson84 3 года назад
@@anthonycook2047 A regular Queen size bed is 60X80. A regular King is 76X80. Whatever measurement he used for the length, we used. For the width, we used 81.5. Use the same addition of measurement we used for the bed frame for the base. Instead of 2X6 for the base we used 2X8 to make the bed sit higher off the floor.

I would recommend turning your try square around so the base is on the meat of the wood when making your marks. Otherwise, it is almost resting on nothing and you could be off with your pencil marks. Jordan, you are one fortunate guy to have a Dad like you do. You will never, ever forget all your quality time together ! I am 70 and lost my Dad when I was 28. I miss our times together. Count your blessings !! This is the last video I have seen in your series. So I am at 100% now. I look forward to each and every one !
