I don't know how I stumbled upon your videos, but I am so glad that youtube's algorithm led me here. You are like a much nicer version of my dad, as he is the type to tackle all kinds of projects on his own, which is now how I am. I used to be so hard headed, and not wanting to go to work with him growing up, but the older I get, the more I appreciate it.

Nice red ride, bought an JD 825I gator in 2013, wouldn't give it up for nothing, well almost. Built nice tool holder for 3 of those black tools in top of cab between roll cage, your going to love that ride. They sure beat using a tractor all the time and gets into the woods a lot better.

Not at all wanting to be a trouble maker here. Gate building 101: The diagonal is actually to prevent the gate from sagging. The bottom diagonal support should be the hinge side. Yes it does help keep the gate square, however support from a more solid point on the gate prevents the weight from pulling down the opposite side.
@dunch1988
@dunch1988 4 года назад
You beat me to it. Correct indeed, brace should be from the hinge side up on a timber gate.

@xaderalert

Correct. You want the weight of the gate to be pushing the diagonal support into the bottom hinge, not pulling it away from the upper.

Wranglerstar, I finally got the notification when my favorite family friendly channel. I was very excited to see all the work that everyone is doing around your farm. Even Sweetloaf is helping feed the little critters and following her big brother Jack around learning how to help with the daily chores. It’s always nice to see how everyone has their own things to do during this unusual experience with what is happening around our country and nationwide shutdown of many businesses. I have noticed an uptick in my neighborhood with women who are now getting back to the basics of making starter dough for sourdough bread! My daughter found my plus 40 year old cookbook. Now I have the recipes I have made many types of bread and fruit pies that I used to sell almost every weekend. And a few loyal church members would drop by to buy their favorite type of bread. It’s like bringing back some old traditional values to our communities! Cody a very sturdy Douglas fir gate👍

I always thought that the brace in the gate was to help keep the gate from sagging, which is the same as keeping it square. The brace meets the bottom of the gate at the hinge side. That way the weight of the gate gets transferred down to the post. Otherwise the gate can still sag
@montycantsin8861
@montycantsin8861 4 года назад
Yeah, I thought the same. Wood has incredible compression strength, but when you angle the brace down from the top of the hinge side, your just pulling on your fasteners or joinery. I see sagging gates all the time, and every single time, the brace is coming top hinge side to bottom latch side.

My gosh I've missed the woodshop! Amazing work and incredible craftsmanship as always. Its so great to see your projects develop from plan to completion. I have my grandad's wood plane which I meticulously care for, a gift to me before he died and I totally agree nothing beats the quality finish of a razor sharp hand plane. He was a WW2 special forces veteran and used to sharpen his tools so that they could split hairs or as he put it 'finish a Nazi'. I'm deeply thankful for your videos good sir and I pray that God is richly blessing you and yours. While writing this comment Psalm 91 came to mind, not sure why. God bless.

Hey Cody, just a tip. For pocket holes I recommend using pan head screws. It doesn’t have to be actual kreg screws. The pan head really closes any gaps and pulls the joint tight. The deck like screws your using can split the wood and they tend to not pull the joint as tight. As always I enjoy your videos

In England, we like to build the apprentices character. Things like catching sparks (getting them to hold a bucket while someone uses an angle grinder) bump start a large circular saw (they run as fast as they can with the blade on the floor) or getting air samples for testing (waving a black sack around in the air) and then other items such as putting a broom through the sleeves of their overalls while putting them bum first into a bin full of water or putting ketchup under the inner soles of their boots when they aint looking so when they step in them, saucy feet. Ahh good times. Luckily when i was an apprentice the only thing that happened to me was getting pinned down in a chair and having a salmon rubbed on my face.
