Wanted a Wood Burner for my shed mancave that would be safe an not fill the place with leathel fumes, so door had to sealed. Spent a few weeks gathering up a large gas bottle an played with a few idea's in my head an came up with this stove.
Now always wanted to try some Black Smithing as i used to visted a Black Smith when i was a child with my father.
So thought i try an mix a wood burner to head shed wit the idea of a forge.
The air vent on bottom cylinder was going to dual purpose for air stove an when the charcoal forge was up an running it be for the forced air from a blow " hair dryer".
I had a good idea it may have smoke problem when it was going to used as a forge the froced air going into it , the turkey tinfoil try worked wonders at keep smoke in the burner cylinder, i may make something more respectable like a mini hood to put on an take off when forge is not in use.
So Thanks for taking the time to read an watch the video.

Excellent work. I built a small wood burner years ago for my shed. Works well but the door seal is always a problem. I have thought of a way to make it much better but I am now banned from arc welding due to having a pacemaker. It will have to stay the way it is!

cut the door out first clamp flat bar with mole grips at door opening and bend the flat bar around the tank to get the precise curve in the flat bar to fit around the door precisely once welded onto the door edge fit in place in the door opening and weld the hinges into place that works better than what you are trying
@kellycarver2500
@kellycarver2500 5 лет назад
I would have cut out the door first and then welded the lip around it, and put the fiberglass seal on the inside of the lip, to stop all smoke leaking out. I don't think the stovepipe is too small at all. Maybe your fire is just not hot enough or it's not getting enough inflow draft through the fire chamber. Perhaps your room is too airtight? Or maybe you don't have an air inlet to the fire? Perhaps you need one of those small wheel drafts on the lower part of the door. A fire has to be producing enough heat, too, so the smoke rises. Just some ideas for you. Love the Marley joke. LOL!

It looks like the problem with the smoke coming out the door isn't the flew, but it's that the door itself is just to big overall, for the size of the stove.

it may be better to have the forge pot free standing so that you can heat more of the bar up rather than just the tip otherwise you can only work a small part of it and if you want a cheep but and quite good anvil try a sledgehammer head bolted to a bit of fence post or just fixed to something and that is a nice looking stove

Loved the process and the thinking out loud! Very impressive, truly! I’ve got a petit oval Godin I bought 40 years ago. It’s a great heater still. I’d like to get another but the cost is enormous now. So I’m thinking on making a multi burner and wanted to ask if there was a way of getting these thermal brick lining inside to match the professional ones. I’d like to burn mostly solid fuel like anthracite smokeless ovals. I had thought of attaching the fancy pig iron decor one sees on the old coal stoves but would n]know if these decorative pieces would be available. Anyway, thank you for a really interesting build and done with some dexterity too. Well done!

Great video, and your designing is awesome. Heres something i noticed. What if the flue pipe, or stove pipe, was moved lower near the bottom of the tank, causing the heat and recirculated exhaust gases to exit. It seems there maybe a lot of heat loss where the current flue location is. Plus, I'm thinking, it may result in a cleaner efficient burn, also creating a stronger ventura effect, helping it smoke less like a broken stove,
@usnva5638
@usnva5638 7 лет назад
I think the exit your flue is set too high, not too small. Drop it down to at least half way from the top plate on your dissipater. This will give the unburned wood gases time to drop down over the top of your burn tube, cool a bit, ignite and burn off.

Nice stove my friend! I am close to wrapping up my first stove build, I really like how you did the ash dump with the vent control together, if you don't mind I might have to use your idea. How big is your garage you are heating? And does it heat it good? My first stove is only a 30lb propane tank, my next one is going to be your size, I would also like to get a old air tank for a well because they are bigger around and not so tall, anyhow great job on your wood stove. I did post a few vids of my stove on my channel if your interested. Have a most blessed day!

shed is 16 feet by 28 feet, stove heats it real good an comfortable to work in, i went for the large bottle as i wasnt sure if the smaller one would produce enough heat, if the big bottle was producing too much heat, one could always restrict the air intake to reduce the heat in the stove.

have done this with one of the smaller gas bottles, for my 10ft square shed, that has been insulted and boared to be an offiice.. The heat output is lovely, But have a few issues maybe you could help me with? When i first light the wood and there are flames, i have to leave the door open, which then smokes out the shed, i have to stay out of the shed while iits burning, and leave door open, until its died down and turned to hot smolder, then i can close the door and enjoy the heat.. Or even if its smoldering away nicely, as soon as i open the door to put more wood in, it bellows out smoke into the shed! What have i done wrong? Thanks

Gamerdude 1989 well what seize of flue pipe, you need 5 inch or 6 inch would even be better, an insulated flue is best an the longer the better, insulated flue pipe heats up faster an is better for the fire to draw, had used a 4 inch flue in the past an it was too small an had similar problems like you.

How hot does your stove get?
@TheProjectGuy194
@TheProjectGuy194 2 года назад
Rebecca Stack all depends on how dry the wood is an if it's soft wood or hard wood but does create plenty of heat. Usually I would burn pallet boards etc for first hour to get a faster heat build up an then would go to good solid logs the rest of the day or night which ever when using it. Also with the sealed door an my air vents I can control the heat if it does get too warm by restricting the air floe a little.

also you might get better airflow and less sparks if you made an adapter to blow the air straight up from the bottom ash dump instead of from the side which might be causing more turbulence in the cylinder? just a thought.

That's a fine stove it would be nice if you could find a way to tack weld hood on it so you didn't need to use a turkey pan but hey whatever works. One of the things I've noticed was it took a while to get a good heat even with the blower going. I remembered a video I saw by purgatory Ironworks in America he basically broke down all the different types of fuels that home blacksmiths might try to use our put the link here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0YMMkADTsks.html To break it down I think you may be using the wrong type of fuel the stuff you're using looks like the stuff that would go inside of a barbecue. I think everybody's made this mistake or maybe I'm wrong give the video a look and decide for yourself.

For secondary combustion you need to have the gases ie smoke from the fire travel up the secondary air pipe where they warm up and ignite giving secondary burn. In your system you are pulling air from outside up to the vents but there is no way to carry the gases with it so there is nothing to burn! Might I suggest you watch a video of someone making a two can gasifier stove this may explain it better than I can? Otherwise I love the build, wish I could weld! everything I make has to be bolted together!!

For the forge you can put another piece of pipe with a screw on cap thru the door at an angle that way you can keep the door closed and with a damper on the flue pipe you would be able to control the heat better.

The only thing I can see is to figure out how to get more direct air to the fire so you can get it hotter for forging. Maybe raise the forge pan up a little and run a pipe straight across from the dryer and up to the bottom, that is removable when you take forge pan out.

Thanks for the positive reply. Have been using stove regularly over the winters an very pleased with its performance. Would be nice to have to upgrade to a glass door but think the curve of the cylinder may not give enough air flow behind a glass to stop it blacking with suit. The slide under the stove for the ashes was a big bonus for quick easy cleaning.

a man after my own heart. i made my forge same as yours without the vermiculite. and it worked very well. I made an external brick pizza oven a few years ago and used vermiculite to insulate the dome.i mixed it with sand,cement and clay but also used lime to stop it shrinking and cracking. its got to be in the correct amounts though, theres a bit of a science to it. if I find the paper I wrote it on ill post it up for you. I thought about putting a secondary burn into my log burner. the way I saw it a pipe drew air along the top above the fire and travelled down and released down closer to the burn material. that way hot air was used in the combustion instead of cold. but that's how I saw it and could be wrong. all the best.
