Hey thanks for this vid helps alot with the injection method but how did you maintain the gap? at the bottom and sides?
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 4 года назад
Hey there thanks for your feedback. To maintain the gap at the bottom the glass has a lot of weight so it stays in place. All you have to do is place the glass down on the level ground and then just give it some space from the bottom panel. The weight of the glass itself hold it in place. Along with the metal clamps at the top of the tank to hold the top. The bottom of the side panels will hold itself in place as the glass is heavy.

How did u ensure a gap on the bottom before silicone? Another few toothpicks? Then do you remove them after dry and fill those spots later?
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 3 года назад
Hello Itskano - no I did not leave toothpicks in the bottom as I was siliconing the tank. All I did was adjust the bottom glass to be even all the way around the edges which was approx a Toothpick thickness away from the side walls. The side panels of glass are so heavy that when the side panels are standing up the weight of the glass itself will hold its place when you have adjusted the spacing as you like it. What is important are those clamps at the top of the tank to hold it all square snd straight and also be sure to keep the tank level when building

Hey bro thank you for the dope video ! I have one question , I know say put painters tape on the seam so silicone won’t come out and pull it off so it won’t get stuck, do you put tape on the bottom seams as well ?
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 3 года назад
Hey Solomon’s Island for your feedback and support. No I do not put tape at the bottom of the tank. I leave the bottom just resting on the drop cloth sheet. Once tank is dry after 3-5 days I lift up the tank and peel back the drop cloth that is stuck to the silicone that squished out the bottom and dried to the drop cloth sheet. Once the drop cloth is removed, you can simply cut any excess silicone off with a fresh razor blade. This is the best method so far that works for me. I have used tape before at the bottom and it doesn’t work that well because the tape really gets stuck to the silicone. I prefer to use a strong professional grade drop cloth. Under the drop cloth is a 3/4” thick plywood which is sitting on a level and flat surface.
@solomonsisland2018
@solomonsisland2018 3 года назад
@@LeoPazzo perfect thank you so much I didn’t want to pull out the silicone from the bottom of the tank so I will use a drop cloth as well, and last question I didn’t take in to account the toothpick gap when I was doing my measurements for my 60 gallon will that change the size of the tank a little?

Really interesting! Does the gap being larger not make the tank weaker? I've build a bunch of 40s and now I'm looking at a 275 but I'm really stressing on the joints, have you had any experience with mitred joint glass? Also I'm thinking of tempered for the base and annealed for the sides, would annealed also work for the base? As it would be cheaper to to have all the glass the same. Thanks a bunch for the vid
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo Год назад
Hey Sean. No I haven’t built a tank with 45 degree mitred corners. I have also used flat cut with beveled edges. You can use tempered glass for the bottom but for this tank build I didn’t use tempered glass. I am not familiar with “ annealed “ glass so I can’t answer that question or give my opinion about it. For that 275 gallon tank I would use 3/4 inch glass for bottom and use 5/8 inch glass for the sides. I would euro brace the bottom of the tank from the inside and I would euro brace the top of the tank as well.
@seanwilkinson5403
@seanwilkinson5403 Год назад

Would you say your experiment with injecting from the inside and taping the outside was a success? Also, are the side panels siliconed to the sides of the bottom panel or are they resting on (and siliconed onto) the bottom panel? If the latter option, how do you keep spacing between the bottom and the side panels while applying silicone and curing?
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 3 года назад
Heyyy Jaap. Yes the side panels are siliconed to the sides of the bottom panel. Not on top. The weight of the glass will hold its position at the bottom. You just have to space it out at the bottom and then space it out at side / top and then clamp it in the 4 corners . Hope this helps 💯💯

Yo... I just bought an older Hagen 120g tank. The previous owner pulled a side panel off trying to "Drag It" across his carpet apparently... anyway... as I stated, the side panel is pulled off... the top and bottom trim attached to this panel broke off obviously compromising structural integrity. The glass is 1/2" thick, polished and beveled. I tore it apart and cleaned up the glass (A torturous process if anyone is considering doing this... but keep in mind, everything is better with a bag of weed lol). I noticed you built your tank with a "Flat" bottom... could I do the same? The tank I have is slightly tinted blue/green so obviously an older tank, I would assume early to mid 90's. I have done my research... fully confident of being able to reassemble the aquarium... I would hate to have it all fall apart in my house just because of no Trim or not being raised up the 1/2" or so that the factory trim held the bottom panel up... not sure that made sense lol but the Original Factory Trim (Which is Broken now) held the bottom glass panel up into the wall panels about 1/2" or maybe 3/8". I don't expect you to know... but I figured I'd ask. Any help or information from anyone who has tried this please let me know. Thanks
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 4 года назад
White Trash and Hellbound i understand what u mean about the bottom panel being raised up. This must be a store bought tank and. It custom built. You would need new trim at top and bottom if damaged at allllll. As the factory uses thinner glass to save money and uses plastic trim to support it as plastic mould is cheaper then thicker glass. So they use the plastic trim as structure to the tank build. Any damage to plastic trim then the structural strength of the tank has lowered and is now risky. I honestly don’t recommend fixing that size tank. If anything here is an option. Find out if the glass is tempered glass tank - walls and bottom. If not tempered you can strip down the tank 100% clean all silicone and have someone cut the glass for you into a smaller sized tank and maybe buy 1-2 pcs if really needed and build yourself a tank injection method.

most of the tanks I have seen, and all the tanks I build, the walls rest on the base glass. but in your video I was pretty surprised to see the base being smaller than the perimeter. so, when you inject the sides to the base, how do you prevent the silicon to adhere to the floor (or whatever you have on the base)?
@michaelharris9849
@michaelharris9849 5 лет назад
The way you are building your tanks is wrong and puts shear forces on the silicone, the way Leo builds his is the correct way to build aquariums. As for silicone adhering to the base surface, that's why he used a drop cloth smoothed out perfectly flat so that once the silicone had dried he could flip the tank and peel away the drop cloth preventing it from sticking to the board underneath. Of course if you read through the comments section there's answers to every question you could think of, but I'll spoon feed them to you just this once.

the silicone is already contacting the glass if it is injected correctly. and any alteration is no good. next thing you know you have half dried silicone and now your shimming your tank back and forth to get it square?> not good. the tank glass should all be 100% set before starting injection method.

@LeoPazzo 3 года назад
Hello Mitch Van - depending what size tank you will be building and what thickness of glass you will be using for your tank build. The toothpick was used in this video as an example so people can see the size of the gap. Roughly estimate the thickness of the tooth pick and calculate that into the size panels of glass you would need. Your best bet is to draw it out on paper so you can visually see how you will be assembling the glass tank. And you can calculate the length and width of each glass panel . Hope this helps 💪💯

LEOPAZZO TV .....All ADA tanks are made as this video shows - All panels around the bottom glass and not on top. ADA make the best tanks and if they use this method in their highly priced tanks, I guess you could use this too. It's important to know that the silicone needs to be applied on the same plane in which the force of water is applied. All forces push down and out. The downward force is handled by the stand and the outward forces need to be handled by the silicone on the same plane. This is the correct way to build a tank. Having the sides sit on top of the bottom glass introduces a shear force going outward on all the beads of silicone on the bottom glass. That is where most of your leaks happen. Learn a lesson from the Japanese and understand the physics at play here. Build it how you want it...and fix it when it leaks.

@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 6 лет назад
not really, you can leave the glass as is once you inject the silicone. you just have to have the correct size gap to start with. once you have the correct gap, lock it in with the metal braces and inject the silicone, you can slightly tap on the glass if you think it will help with your contact bond. but ideally you should be injecting the silicone so the gap is completely full with silicone.

In normal method, (not injection) do gaps between the glasses is important ? Is yes do tell the reason behind because in injection it is necessary for injection, but what about normal one, I'm making aquarium from years and i don't like gaps in between the glasses so....
@LEOPAZZOPRODUCTIONS
@LEOPAZZOPRODUCTIONS Год назад
Good question. Both methods will require a gap with silicone between the glass. Without the silicone gap the 2 pieces of glass could / will be touching each other and can create a pressure point on the glass which could cause it to crack or break. For example when building an aquarium the normal method, you place the silicone on the 1 piece of glass and you butt up the other glass up to the glass with the silicone on it. That right there is creating a gap with silicone so the 2 pieces of glass don’t touch each other. Hope this helps and clarifies.

Hello, may i ask how did you maintain the bottom gap?
@LeoPazzo
@LeoPazzo 3 года назад
Hello. The bottom gap is maintained by the weight of the glass itself. Before applying the silicone. You have to align the glass and space it out accordingly. The weight of the side panels of glass holds its position at the bottom. It is at the google where you need to use the metal clamps to hold the top corners in place. The gap at the bottom should be the same size gap as the sides. Hope this helps - 💪

Hey man, how did you make sure that the bottom panel didn't stick to the drop cloth the tank was sitting on?
@JulianaSuperChannel
@JulianaSuperChannel 7 лет назад
Ethan Peregoy great question. The tank and silicone actually DID stick to the drop cloth. And to be honest this was intended. And I'll explain why. The drop cloth is easy to peel off from the tank bottom glass and silicone. In a previous build I used just a sheet of 3/4" plywood and had the tank glass directly on top of plywood . But when I was ready to remove the tank from the plywood the silicone was really stuck to the silicone and was hard to remove the plywood. That's why this time around. I still used the plywood as my solid straight and level base that I can easily shim if need to make level and flat if needed. From there I laid down the drop cloth nice and flat with no creases or seams overlapping. As it is very important to have the bottom pane of glass to sit flat and level in each direction, front to back and left to right. Once drop cloth was positioned, I placed the bottom pane of glass in place, on top the drop cloth. So all in all. Once silicone was dry for over 1 week I tilted the tank on its side and started to peel back the drop cloth slowly and observing the silicone that it was not being damaged or effected. And from my experience in this tank build, peeling back the drop cloth from the dry silicone was no issue and didn't effect the silicone and rip it out. Pretty straight forward. Again great question Ethan. I appreciate you tuning in. How's your tank going?
