Shopping List for How to Build a Grass Driveway:
- Grass and gravel pavers
- 3/4-inch crushed stone
- Loam
- Sod or grass seed
Tools List for How to Build a Grass Driveway:
-Shovel
-Tamper
-Wheelbarrow
-Reciprocating saw
-Push broom
Steps for How to Build a Grass Driveway:
1. Call utility locating service to make sure it's safe to dig where you are installing pavers.
2. Using shovels, dig down about 6 inches from street grade level.
3. Compact soil using a tamper.
4. Put down 2 to 3 inches of 3/4-inch crushed stone. Compact it using a tamper and repeat.
5. Lay paver tile about an inch below grade.
6. Snap the pieces together.
7. To stagger the joints, cut pieces in half using a reciprocating saw and attach.
8. Once all pavers are in place, fill in the grid with loam.
9. Even out the loam using a push broom.
10. Water the soil to help compact it into the honeycomb grid.
11. Lay down sod across the grid. As an alternative to sod, you could plant grass seed.

There a lot of advantages, rainwater percolates through rather than running off and contributing to flooding. Another is that if you live in a northern climate, the rougher surface provides better traction than asphalt. I have had it on part of my driveway for 8 years and has held up well - better than the asphalt sections.
@codycross7063
@codycross7063 4 года назад
does it kill the grass you plant on top of it at all(from driving)? do you have any pictures? just curious
@travel734
@travel734 4 года назад
@@codycross7063 It all depends on the amount of traffic and the climate. At William the Conqueror's castle in Falaise they used it in the keep for a path to allow deliveries. At ground level it is barely noticeable. From the Bailey looking down you can make out the path but only if you know what you are looking for. The climate in Normandy is mild and fairly damp so it is great for growing grass. In a hotter more arid climate it might be different. I would not expect it to be as nice as undisturbed grass but a lot better than pavement.

On relatively flat ground I don’t see why putting yet more plastic in the ground is needed. Why not use larger gravel in place of the grid? Back in the day our farm roads were accidentally like that. Grass eventually invaded the gravel and you had a nice grassy lane to drive on with solid gravel base.

How is the sod, inches above the pavers protected from traffic?!? Leaving out the construction cloth will let the soil rinse down into the gravel layer, destabilizing the pavers. . I expected the paver cups to extend above the soil surface an inch or two, to protect the grass from being crushed by the tires. I suspect he did not read the instructions. Even then, I would expect that enough soil will form in the cups each year to fill them up, forcing the grass stems to start higher, and then up to where the tires will kill them, forming 2 dirt ruts in the grass.
