A time laps; making a driveway by laying turfstone pavers, over gravel and sand. Before the video starts I hauled off 8 thousand pounds of gravel from the drive way to make room for the pavers. I also installed and edges on each side of the drive way, made from recycles wood and plastic deck material. This should last forever. The first thing to go on the driveway was some new gravel, we leveled this using a straight piece of 2 by material run between the 2 edges. This gravel was then compacted with a plate compactor. Next we put down bedding sand. This was made level and very flat using the same method as the gravel. Next the pavers where carefully placed on the sand. We used 110 pavers. Next we filed the holes in the pavers with a mixture of soil and sand. After the video ends I compacted the pavers into place with a plate compactor with half inch plywood between the compactor and pavers.

Everyone should be using this method to build driveways, or something similar. Much more environmentally-friendly than asphalt or interlock, as it allows water to infiltrate straight down into the soil, which can also naturally filter out many toxins. Surfaces like asphalt are impermeable, forcing water runoff to drain sideways and mix with a greater quantity of gas and other ground contaminants along the way. This contaminated runoff can eventually funnel out, polluting natural waterways and aquifers.

Compacting the gravel took a few minuets. We laid the paves in a morning, so 3 or 4 hours. I have still not gotten to the grass, I am almost done with the other projects in the back of the house, that I want to get done before I put the grass in. although the lawn is starting to take over the pavers on it's own.

Idea. Mix grass seed in with the dirt as you fill it in...?

Hi Frank, I really enjoy your vids. Very informative and interesting to watch, I particularly appreciate it when you leave in your mistakes and how you rectify them. I do have one question, I'm a relatively newcomer to the world of woodworking and for the life in me, i can't work out why you sometimes measure with the tape_measure on an angle. PS. There aren't many things in this world covet, but thats one fantastic workshop. Regards

Looks like a great job. The prep and installation was done very well and to professional standards. How long did the project take after you removed the 4 tons of gravel and can you post a video of what the pavers look like now with the grass grown in?

Any feedback from the HO on how level it has held up over the years? Freeze thaw cycles? Traffic?

8k pounds of gravel removed from just that 20' section? That would be about 40lbs/sqft, which seems unlikely.

Not really. a cubic foot of water weighs 62 pounds.

I didnt see you guys spacing the turfstone minimum of 3/16" to prevent traffic from vibrating the pavers against each other and chipping/cracking. I see this recommendation in the literature

I think I just lied them together. spacing them a little would be a good idea. They get very little traffic.

What depth and type of gravel? What depth and type of sand?
@frankmakes
@frankmakes 10 лет назад
3/4 minus gravel 4 to 6 inches deep. I think it's called setting send about an inch deep.

what if I wanted to go without the gravel for a walkway, intending the surface to be rather flush with the grass around it and have grass grow through the turf stone? would this create a hard surface for walking while keeping the mud down? would this work?

Yes, it is also great if you want to be able to park cars on your lawn.

how can I cut these to contour to the concrete driveway? I am trying to widen my driveway and this turf paver would be a great product. Thanks, B
@frankmakes
@frankmakes 10 лет назад
You can get blades for a circular saw that will cut concrete. Then don't cut the full thickness just enough to break it along that cut in a straight line. Or find your local equipment rental place, they might have something, or advice.
