In this video, I'll show you how to build a DIY porch swing bed! I'm sharing printable building plans below for both a TWIN and a CRIB size mattress swing bed in this design. So, let's get building!
Check out the step by step tutorial and plans here:
www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-p...
Check out the printable plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
This project was pretty simple and only required a few tools and some basic power saws to make the cuts. It also used all standard and easily accessible lumber to keep things easy.
One thing to note: I used untreated wood for this project since it was going to be under a large covered porch and won't be affected much by sun and/or rain. However, treated, cedar, or another more weather resistant option is recommended if yours will be exposed to the elements.
Some posts you may find helpful to check out before starting this project:
How to Make 2x2s from 2x4s: www.woodshopdiaries.com/woodw...
How to Use a Pocket Hole Jig: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-t...
How to Cut Plywood Sheets: www.woodshopdiaries.com/cut-d...
*Keep in mind this project is to be replicated at your own risk. Since this will be installed in a ceiling, make sure you are confident that your application and hardware can hold the weight of both the swing and the people who will be in it.

You are constantly surprising me on the things you build. I never quite know what to expect. I use to sit on a porch swing a lot and I was always afraid it would break. Your construction appears much more solid. I've wondered about your use of pocket holes, but in this case they appear entirely appropriate for the task at hand, and overall your construction appears really solid and well thought out. I'd say you hit this one out of the park. Thanks for sharing.
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 3 года назад
Thanks so much! I'm glad I can keep you guessing...I guess haha. I know there is a lot of hate about pocket holes. I get it, but then again, I don't. I've always found them to be PLENTY strong for the application to keep things as practical as possible. This was definitely not as detailed or "nice" as some of my furniture pieces, so it was easy to just screw together with big screws and call it good. it's definitely solid. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching.

Hi! Oh my gosh thank you so much! I appreciate you following along! I haven’t specifically made a kitchen island, but I’ve made several things that you could potentially use as a kitchen island! They may not be what you had in mind, but here’s a couple ideas! www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-build-a-writing-desk/ www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-grill-cart-bbq-prep-table/ www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-shelf-with-drawers-using-2x4s-and-plywood/

Great build. I always enjoy your straightforward approach. Can I ask how you make sure the pocket hole joints line up - mine tend to creep as I tighten them in even with clamps.

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it! I’ve found most of the pocket hole misalignment issues come from overdriving the screws. Hold it tight (or clamp) and drive the screw until right. But don’t keep cranking on it or it’ll pull it forward

I almost expected to see sleigh bed ends on it. I might even do that. And run the hanging cables through holes in the rounded part of the sleigh ends. Maybe not so high like a conventional sleigh bed headboard but lower, so they could be arm rests.

Hi Shara I have plans to make one of my own. Yours is beautiful! I do have a question that I haven't been able to find the answer to. How did you locate the rafters? Do you have to remove the soffit? Please tell me there is an easy way! 😁💚

Hi! So in this case, we just went up to the attic and measured their locations in relation to the wall then transferred those measurements down below to hang it. You may can try using a stud finder if you can’t access the attic (not 100% sure, but I’d think that would work as well)

Very nice looking swing. Good job!I am curious about how much it weighs and how much weight it can hold. Do you have an idea.?
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 2 года назад
I didn’t test it to failure as I didn’t want to make a new one. The eye screws were rated for 250 each so theoretically they should hold 1000 ish pounds total if evenly distributed across the bed. But much will depend on the wood used, the material it’s screwed into, the condition of the wood used for the swing (cracks, knots, wood type). There are many factors.

Hi shara, I know this is random but I have watched a few of your videos in the process of starting a small buisness making some large but mostly small wooden stuff and I love the stuff you have made. I just want to know how you started with your wood projects? I just don’t know where to begin!!😩 it’s overwhelming when I see so many things out there and large stuff. Also have you ever made a bird aviary. I’m wanting to build an aviary in my back yard for my larger parrots but I don’t see a whole lot of ideas and if I find one they look not so good. If you were to make one how would you make an affordable but super cute aviary for parrots to spread their wings and get some sun? I just like a lot of your ideas better than others😊

I have an old elementary school style (heavy duty cast iron piping) swingset. What was the approximate weight of this? I'm wondering if I hung it from chains if it would work/be strong enough.

Your tools look so tidy and neat 👍 I wish I could keep them as organised , just wondering do you tidy up after each job is completed ?

Haha, don't be fooled...my shop is almost always a wreck! Usually I will take some time to kind of "pick up" between projects, but sometimes I'm in the middle of a few at once, so I just figure out how to work through the chaos. Having some organizers and wall panels helps a lot!

That makes me feel better 😉 I look around the workshop half way through a project and it looks a bomb went off in it , I do try to tidy up between projects ( doing it right now actually ) blessings from Ireland 🇮🇪👍🙏

Hi! Honestly I don’t. If I had to estimate, maybe around 100lbs or so. It would depend on what you build it out of and what size you make it.

New subscriber. I've been viewing your videos for a while now. I especially like the bedroom storage unit with the quilted top you built. A suggestion: invest in a remote mic for when you're not narrating over your videos. Your voice does come over well in most instances, but as someone with a mild to moderate hearing deficiency, sometimes background wind noise, shop noise or echoes do make it more difficult to pick up what you're saying.
