Ever since setting up shop in my basement, I’ve been wanting to move my air compressor into a shed. In this video, I’m going to show you how easy it is to build this lean to shed. This is the perfect solution to house an air compressor outside of your shop, but it can also be used for anything from storing sports equipment to gardening tools and supplies. In my plans, I show how to modify this shed to be the right size for whatever you might need! I also show you how to frame a wood foundation if you don't want to pour a concrete slab.
All of the materials and tools I used for the projects are linked below along with The Home Depot's Mobile App and Tool Rental resources!
This project is sponsored by my friends at The Home Depot. From versatile buying options, tool rentals, and thousands of how-to videos, The Home Depot has the tool and materials you need to keep building and get more done.
Thank you so much for watching & I hope you enjoy the project!

As part of adding a screened porch, we had our shed replaced - the grubby, rickety metal shed that held the bikes and garden equipment. However, as the new shed took shape - designed and painted as a mini-me of the house - it morphed into a she-shed for potting, furniture painting and crafting. Oops, bikes don't fit! Now I'm planning a 4x6 shed beside the driveway dedicated to bikes and long handled garden tools (they aren't pretty enough for the big shed, LOL). Your plan is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the clear, concise demo!

I have one of these lean to sheds. Mine is a 4x8 foot model. It’s cool it’s also my mini studio. Insulted the walls and all. Cool little personal space to have. I painted mine white as well because I was considering the heat. White reflects it so it probably reduced heat transfer a little.

@@WoodshopMike it’s more like a little office and a place i hang two of my guitars. They’re on each end of the shed. The interior is decorated with a couple cool music posters. One is an Iron Maiden Poster and one is a Kendrick Lamar poster. From the the interior of the shed where the door is, I put a mirror up. Close to the end where the acoustic guitar is hanging is a little small desk that I can move around. I will move in a mattress in there maybe and i can lay down in it lol. I recently added interior lights with LED strips that can change colors. I usually have it set to white or blue.

Nice little shed. I would have done the roof differently though. The felt paper should go down first, then the drip edge. You cut it a little short on the ends which with hard driving winds and rain, may get water under the shingle and rot that osb. I also would have used reg. or if I had it, PT plywood for the roof instead of OSB. Thanks for sharing.

Turned out great. Just curious, it looked like you could have gone bigger where the shed is located. What was your thoughts on determining that size shed to build?
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 2 года назад
Thank you! Yes, I could have made the shed a bit wider, but about 2' from the front the ground slopes away. I really just needed this shed for my air compressor and that's the main thing that drove the dimensions👍
@haunday2094
@haunday2094 2 года назад
Great project and explanation! I have a question about the water protection. Did you just use the primer over the OSB?
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 2 года назад
Thank you! The only OSB I used was for the roof sheathing (it didn't get painted since the shingles were covering it. The sides of the shed, but that's probably obvious). The siding is R-10. That and the trim were all primed and painted. Does that answer your question? Thank you for watching!

Nothing says spring like a well built garden shed. Very nice work. I have heard some people say the the drip edge should be tight to the fascia board, some say it should be spaced off. Do you have a opinion on this theory, or have you ever heard of this ? Thanks, and God bless
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 3 года назад
Thank you sir! I’m glad I knocked it out before the dog days of summer too. That side of the house gets baked in the afternoon 🥵 I always keep the drip edge tight against the flashing. Since it flares out a bit at the bottom the surface tension of the water should break before droplets could roll back and sit on the fascia boards and cause water damage. Also by keeping the drip edge tight it discourages wasps etc from building nests. God bless you as well

Also, glad you listed the parts and tools on here, especially which Diablo blade you used. Sometimes that confuses me in these types of videos. Thanks.
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 2 года назад
Thank you very much and I'm glad the video was helpful! Yes, the plans are for this exact shed. The slab is right at 3'x4'. If you want to make the shed larger, just make sure the stud spacing doesn't exceed 16" on center and you'll be good. I think I have a couple notes in the plans regarding how to modify the size of the shed. LOL, I hear ya! To attach it to your house you would just cut away the siding where you want the shed, pour your slab, and anchor to wall studs 👍. Then tie the siding in with house when you side the shed. Since this was intended for an air compressor I wanted the structures to be separate for noise, vibration, and the potential air compressor failure. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Just curious
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 2 года назад
Thank you very much! This one is 4'x3'. In the plans I don't have a spread sheet or chart for different size sheds if that's what your asking, but if you follow the same method you can use the plans as a guide. The main thing is wall studs need to be no more than 16" on center and the roof joists need to be no more than 24" on center. If you stick to that you'll be good!

Thank you for the great instructions you provide. I really enjoy your videos. However, I have a question. How do we weather proof the sides which back up against the back wall. I’m anchoring my shed to the wall of my house. I have a brick veneer house, but the concern would be the same regardless of it being weatherboard or brick veneer. My concern is when it rains directly in that area (back house wall) or when the wind pushes the rain in that direction, it will rot out the back wall. Does anyone here have any ideas or suggestions to deal with this? Thank you guys in advance 🙏

@WoodshopMike

Very cool! The reason I put the top drip edge (could also just be flashing) on top of the shingles at the high side of the roof is so I have a seamless "cap". This keeps water on top of the shingles instead of potentially running under them. Hope that makes sense. Happy building!

Hi Steve, That sounds awesome! I thought about doing the same thing in regards to plumbing the DC back into the shop to save on heated/cooled air, but after thinking through everything (including the massive holes I'd have to cut in the house) I opted to just leave the DC in the shop as it's in a pretty good spot already.

@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 2 года назад
I did that so that the top side of the roof would catch any rain the misses the roof line of my house. That way the ground behind the shed wouldn't get soaked during a heavy rain. I also made the overhang that large so that I could add some 3" round soffit vents (yeah, I know I didn't show or mention those 😕) Hope that helps!

do you have an estimation on price? I am looking for a garden shed and this might be cheaper than buying one. I would not be able to do concreate as I will need to be able to move it in like 3 years-we are renting but we have a yard. If I did not do concrete could I just put planks down and then plywood on top for a floor? Also, would I need something to anchor it down still?
@WoodshopMike

In the plans I have an alternate design for the floor if concrete isn't an option, so you're covered there! When I built mine materials were around $275 - $350.

Yep, you can adjust the dimensions. There are notes in the plans of what to keep in mind when doing so👍 one way or another you need to anchor the structure to the slab, not really an option I'd trust to get around drilling into the slab unfortunately.

I don't remember, but Home Depot has a calculator on their site. If you enter the dimensions of the slab you're wanting to pour and select the bag size you'll be using it'll give you the number of bags needed. I'd recommend grabbing a few extra and return whatever you end up not using.

Thanks Scott! If this wasn't for an air compressor I would have built it flush with the house, and tied in the siding etc, so that's the reason for the gap. I contemplated the same negatives you brought up & thankfully it's not been an issue. Hopefully it stays that way 🤞. Totally agree about the down spout and good eye!
