How To Build A Mini Ramp with Billy Rohan

Check out these step-by-step instructions on how to build a mini ramp with pro skater Billy Rohan.
If you've got a bunch of pro-skateboarder friends and you're splurging on a giant birthday party for yourself, it goes without saying that you're going to need a half-pipe. That's why Billy Rohan, a NYC skateboarder, came by VICE's 15th anniversary party two days early bearing lumber, power tools, and an entourage of eager skater guys and girls. From there it was a hurried flurry of plywood shavings and bandsaw screechings as Billy walked us step-by-step through the building of a mini ramp that can service a couple thousand partygoers. Think of this little how-to number as the This Old Ramp edition of Epicly Later'd.

Carpenter/skater here. I see everyone asking for price. To build this ramp to their specs would probably run you about 1200 - 1500 bucks depending on where you live (cost of wood varies in different places). 24' pipe is about 100 bucks, again, depending on where you live. That price is tools NOT INCLUDED. Circular saw, jig saw, metal cutting blade, impact drill, drill bits, 4' level, pencil and speed square (which he didn't mention but you FOR SURE need) will cost around 650 bucks if its all brand new middle-of-the-road quality. Probably 50 bucks worth of screws too. TO SAVE COSTS you can consider having wider spacing (12" spacing max I'd say but hey, its your ramp, go 16" spacing if you want), smaller top landing (2' wide is fine), go 8' wide on the width instead of 12', shorter transition/shorter height (4' is nice and chill), smaller length for the bottom deck, lower grade lumber, and Masonite sheets instead of Ramp Armor. Check classifieds for cheap tools or borrow from people you know if you don't have any. Don't buy new if you don't have to. Go the cheaper way and you could do it for probably 600 - 800 bucks, tools not included.
@gettinnapkins
@gettinnapkins 9 лет назад
why did they not just shoot it all with a framer? that would shave like two days off the build time. does it really need the extra hold?
@mattdevaud
@mattdevaud 9 лет назад
Up to you and your wallet really. DIY or hire someone. Depends on how much you value your time. As for the seemingly tight spacing, i'll compare it to a wall in your house. Walls are built to support weight from above and divide rooms. Your walls are probably 16" spacing, which is adequate for their job. But a mini ramp (and any skate ramp in general) is built the way it is to resist impact aka ollies/slamming. They don't build walls with the idea that someone is going to jump or fall on them. That's why i'd advise anyone to try and not cheap out on lumber by going with wider spacing. But hey, like i was saying before, it's your money and your ramp.
@gettinnapkins
@gettinnapkins 9 лет назад
i should have prefaced that i am a fellow carpenter/skater. it seems, like you said, screws would handle the impact aspect better, but having done a particular amount of framing in my life, i cringe watching them drive all those screws. i guess it'd be a decent excuse to get some good work from my new makita impact...
@mattdevaud
@mattdevaud 8 лет назад
+CIA Seems a tad steep in my opinion, but i don't really know your specific specs or region of the world so you might be right. As for anyone else reading this and is actually considering doing this, take my advice with a grain of salt. Do your homework and research prices of materials in your area. Some people will pay 4 bucks for a 16' 2X4, some people will have to pay 10 bucks or more. The price range i said in my previous comment is on THE LOWER END of things. PRO TIP: Phone around and get price quotes. Call different lumber yards. Home Depot is NOT a good place to get deals on lumber. Ask anyways tho, you never know. Also ask for a contractor rate or if they have a bulk order discount or something. Check the grade of your lumber as well. Lower grade stuff is a way to save money, but you might end up with a garbage ramp in about 6 months. Look for No.1 SPF 2X4's. Anything more then that is excessive and a waste of money.

I just built my ramp following the specs shown in this video. It is, overall, an excellent way to build a ramp. There are a few key things things that get left out or too quickly glossed over in the video: 1. A full materials list. 2 instructions for setting the coping so that it sticks up/out the right amount (1/4" up, 3/8" out). 3. How to lay each layer of plywood down so that the seams aren't railroaded. 4. The posts supporting the deck need to be braced at the bottom and sit on something dry like a cinder block so they don't rot. 5. If you aren't building on a level surface inside, ground leveling has to be done. It is, even on slightly sloped ground, a pain in the ass. If you can find someone who is at least somewhat experienced in carpentry, you can save yourself time, money and stress by avoiding common mistakes. (Cutting the transitions curves cleanly and consistently is not that easy) The transitions are very mellow. If you want a faster ramp, consider a tighter radius. Also, the decks need more support than is depicted in the video. I added another support post near the front of the platform where it meets the transition in the middle of the deck. I live in Northern California and got a pretty sweet deal on lumber and this ramp still cost me around $1400 in lumber and screws.

did you do 7 foot transitions with 8 feet of flat? do you have enough speed to continue up the opposing side without having to pump like crazy (i.e. you do get tired a lot on your ramp?) also how do you like your coping with 3/8 inch out? i was thinking 1/4 inch for both but than was thinking 3/8 for both as 1/4 may seem a bit small. thanks in advanced!

@drewcama5481
@drewcama5481 6 лет назад
@Matt Fisher yes I agree The coping instructions was way to brief. shouldn't you use lock washers on the inside of the pipe and thicker screws like #10 instead of #8 wood screws? Or you have to drill two different size wholes in the pipe a larger on the outside and smaller on the inside. Does the back of the pipe get another 2X4 or something smaller to add support?

@codyolmstead4907 4 года назад
Looks like a nice ramp. Im not sure if changing spacing and doubling up every second or third 2x4 support is the way to go though. It could create lumps or sags in your plywood surface because the "framing" would have different amounts of support. I recommend using as many 2x4's as you have and spacing them out equally. It's all about balanced construction. Great job showing how to mark the transition and not waste plywood to do it. Ive never built a mini ramp but Ive been a journeyman carpenter for 10 years. Just my thoughts but you did an awesome job on building this ramp. I wish I could have done a project as cool as this when I still skated!!!

This is an awesome video. Just wanted to point one thing out to new carpenters. This video shows them using drywall screws which are not strong enough for structural work (especially in shear, see 9:32). Great for securing the decking, but not for building the stick frame. For that you'd want to use actual structural screws or back them up with framing nails. Also, construction adhesive under the coping is a wonderful trick to make it durable! Loved the video!

2:47, every 8in 3:11, 3 screws 3:42, maybe use 2 2x4s every other block, extra suppport 7:19, screw around 4 screws 7:47, every sheet will have 4 screws going across 7:54, plywood should be horizontal, stand on it, and work from the bottom up 8:26, some people use less wood, use 1/2 inch sheet of ply, and then another 1, so you don't break through and hurt urself 9:04 plywood shouldn't fall seam over seam, change the structure so they don't overlap, stronger ramp 10:50, want to use 3/4 inch ply on top of the deck, even an 1inch ply is good

@SweetMooch
@SweetMooch 7 лет назад
Yosef Estill Linear stress on the long axis of the sheet of ply focuses at the end of the sheet.
@raymondflower9133
@raymondflower9133 7 лет назад
When you put 2 layers of ply wood on the whole stagger the seam doesn't matter as long a you stagger the two layers. stagger the seams and then stagger the the next layer different and seams staggered would just lead to a ton of waste of ply wood, and more time dicking around. Just make sure u stagger the each layer and its good. I am a carpenter, and I've built ramps before.
@SweetMooch
@SweetMooch 7 лет назад
Raymond Flower still better if you stagger the seams on each layer individually and from one another. It does NOT waste plywood if any if you do it right. If you were a carpenter and not a carpenters helper you would know this. I'm not trying to be a dick but it is not cool to give out wrong information.

Nicholas Loughnan found a website you might be interested in, for plans and materials, although i haven't used it personally to construct a ramp myself( i really want to build a mini, but might start with a 1/4 not sure yet), it tells you what the lumber sizes, grades of ply, costing etc... as well as build plans for all sorts from mini's, ledges, 1/4's, grind rails, to pressing your'e own board. It looks like a lot of time and effort has gone into the site, so it seems legit to me. From Nz here, good luck! www.diyskate.com/

How much did this end up costing excluding tools?
@internetvide0
@internetvide0 8 лет назад
+Mitchel Fife you can just steal with wood from a construction site and rent the tools.
@skuare_qnot
@skuare_qnot 8 лет назад
+Tony Roberts Don't do that because someone paid for that wood. You'll never get enough lumber doing that. You won't find enough of the plywood sheathing, and who's to say the wood you steal is gonna be the correct dimensions? And how are you gonna steal and haul a couple hundred linear feat of lumber? Just buy the lumber yourself don't steal and perpetuate the bad qualities of skateboarders

How much does all this stuff cost in total
@069yomomma
@069yomomma 10 лет назад
Well it depends on where you live. In Tennessee for a 3 1/4 inch thick plywood is about $22, without tax. they used 2 for the side cover, 15 for the base, then an extra 15 for the second layer, then four for the top standing part, and who knows how many 2x4's they used. 2x4"s here are $3.14 for a 6 ft. long one. And the price of the plywood depends on whether it's AB, BC, or CD (expensive to least expensive) and it's basically how smooth it is on each side and they probably used BC so there's that.

Around 400 for materials. Maybe a little more. Probably closer to 500 if you were making it permanent and using quality fasteners and screws.

+Daniel Hancock I used half a year to scavenge in materials to build my half pipes. The only money i spent was on the "ramp armor". I got most of the wood of my countrys version of EBay/Craigslist, and the rest i got from recycling stations.

Great looking ramp! although I'm not too stoked about putting holes all the way through the coping there is a better way to grab the coping from under the ramp so you only put holes on the bottom so you get a clean grind across the coping.

How far from the edge of plywood did you start your transition, a foot in from the edge, then start your transition radius? I’ve some start 16”-20” in from the edge of flat bottom. Didn’t know if it really mattered or not?

The 2x4 that pivots to make the transition. How many inches inside of the 4x8 sheet of ply did you have it before you put the screw in. Looks like a foot maybe ? Please if anyone knows let me know

hell yeah man!... if your looking to start building i recommend a starter kit from makitta or Milwaukee or the like. i have burned out cheap tools so much, im sure it wound up costing wayyyy more. just spend the 4,5,6,7,8 hundred bucks and get tools that last 20 years. cheap tools are a huge waste of time and super frustrating. .... if you build it, they will skate!

as much as i love this video, the biggest issue i have is the neglect for landscape architecture in that warehouse space... that loading dock has much more potential than to cover up with a miniramp. that said, awesome instructional video, i love that they break it all down thoroughly, n the ramp looks amazing.
