Yes, exactly! And I think it's a good strategy + it gives an opportunity to build your confidence. I've heard this phrase before... But uhhh sometimes it's hard to film videos and talk in English on camera, hope I don't sound too awckward, haha. I assume I make so many grammar mistakes. But I'm trying to do my best and hope with practice it will get better soon :)
In general, there's no definition of beauty in fashion industry and model doesn't have to be beautiful at all.The clients are usually just looking for the certain type of face / body / personality that will be perfect for selling their product. And there's a special beauty in our imperfections, our faces aren't simmetrical at all. As long as your features look balanced and in harmony (sorry if it sounds strange - my English isn't perfect but I hope you understand what I mean lol), everything's fine - you can try modeling. And if you're passionate about it, there are many options. I've talked about the industry requirements in one of my videos and also posted a really detailed video on how to become a model. Please feel free to check them out: Modeling industry standards ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uYD5QD-iXeY.html How to become a model ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_sPK2Ewy-U.html Hope it will be helpful for you and good luck! ❤️
hello, I just sent in my application to an agency and they replied back asking for my portfolio. I don't have you yet, should I try building one or just let them know that I don't have one?
Hello Ari, happy to hear that the agency is interested in you :) I think being honest is always the best choice and there's nothing wrong with not having experience in modeling / not having a portfolio yet. Just let them know that you're interested in this career and willing to create a portfolio. Good agencies usually invest in their models and help them building their book or at least they can recommend you nice, trust - worthy photographers and other creatives who can help you. They also can organize a test shoot for you. So, just don't be afraid telling them everything as it is and at the same time you can start building a portfolio by yourself. Even if this agency won't accept you, you will have something to show to the others. Good luck! ❤️
Yes, unfortunately it's really hard to start career in modeling if you have tattoos. But it's possible, especially in Asia and if you don't have many of them or they're not always seen. In other case, if you have lots of tattoes all over your body, you can work as an alternative model or tattoe model. Again, it's more of an exception, but is still possible. For example, Ira Chernova www.wrennmgmt.com/ira She's more into photography now, but used to work as a model for a very long time and was quite successful :) So, give it a try if you're really passionate about it.
@@caitlinmontgomery917 It's good to hear! I'm happy for you :) What modeling markets are you talking about? For example, in Russia, Brazil and some other countries outside EU and US, when it comes to signing up with a Mother Agency it can be a big issue, because it's harder to find contracts abroad for models with tattoos. So, many agents are really sceptical about the tattoos. But if the girl has exceptional features, they don't care if she has tattoos or not. Each case is different.
I'm a makeup artist and it's true. I have a friend that could be a fitness model but too many tattoos. You'd use your whole makeup kit to cover them up.
I am 51 years old and last 25 years I was trying for modeling but after making port folio, they said your look is Chinese so nobody is interested to give you chance, I live in India and agencies took so much amount of money. Although I am a music teacher my parents passed away, now I want to know am I eligible for modeling? Because physically I am fit every day I am doing workout for three hours.
Hello and thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you earlier and sorry to hear about your parents. Hope you're feeling OK now. You know what I think? Now when you got older there actually may be more opportunities for you in modeling since there aren't that many models of senior age out there (comparing to the younger models) which means modeling become less competitive and you may find your own niche. So, why not trying freelance modeling? I have many videos both explaining how to find a Mother Agency and work freelance, please feel free to check them out along with the other videos on my channel. These are must watch: 1. Get scouted as a model | modeling tips for beginners | how to begin working in fashion industry ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AN6TbqQ-dsU.html 2. Rejected by modeling agencies | how to overcome rejection as a model | tips for successful castings ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-onTBXDRgrkY.html India isn't the best modeling market in terms of payment, but still there's a lot of work there. And if you don't look like a typical Indian (look more Asian / Chinese) it may also be your advantage. Try contacting local designers and brands and collaborate with them. Normally agencies don't require any money from you directly, they may invest in your portfolio (and later the model will pay it back), but nothing despite that... What exactly you mean by "agencies took so much money"? Not sure I understand... Anyways, wishing you best of luck!
Hi Tatiana! I am currently applying for modeling agencies and I am putting together my portfolio. Can you talk about digital portfolios and how to set these up correctly? A lot of agencies have been requesting a website or link to portfolio
Hi Hope! Maybe I'll film a detailed video about it later too, for now I would just recommend you not overthinking this :) The most important thing for the agencies is to see a good quality digitals and video materials of yours to figure out how you look ( in case you haven't watched it, here's my video about it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rlv0r96mfkY.html ) and only then they ask for the portfolio. It can be simply uploaded on your google drive or you can use some free domain services. Upload the photos the same way you would have put them together in a printed portfolio (my more detailed video about it is here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zoS8IWwQVOg.html ). For reference just check any agency's website and see how they present their models. Anyways, at this point Hope it'll help and wishing you best of luck 💜
Great tips for what it takes to become a model. It reminds me a little of the acting world. You hae to let a picture tell a thousand words. Do you watch Best Dressed RU-vid channel? She doesn't consider herself a "model" per se, but I really enjoy her style and sense of fastion.
Well, first of all are we talking about really small kids? Of like 3-4 years at least? There's a difference, because when they're a bit older you can understand more of their interests, what they enjoy doing and ect. and if it's a small baby, - everything is up to the parents on 100%. I think first you need to decide: if you really want your child to work instead of having normal ... like regular childhood. Because modeling is a job and you and your kid will be dealing with a lot of stress / declines and etc. I'm not telling you"don't do this", just saying that it's hard. If you're ready to give it a try, - see whether your child enjoys being in front of the camera, seeing new people, how calm he/she is surrounded by strangers and etc. If everything's OK, then try contacting modeling agencies for kids. Where are you based? Other option is freelancing, - start with finding castings, for example, on FB groups. And why modeling? How about acting? Or both? So you could realize what your baby will enjoy more... Just think about it :) There are many options and scenarious, so maybe I'll just film a video about it in the nearest future. If you have any queations, - feel free to ask, I will try to help you as much as I can :) Good luck!
@@TatianaKurnosova thanks wow! He is 1 year old, and I have reached out to a few agencies but idk if I'm doing it right or if I'm going to the right agencies! I'm in chicago!!! :)
You can use any photo paper, just ask the studio ( where you’ll be printing it ) to make a small samples of the photos first to make sure the colours look the right way ( sometime the printers aren’t calibrated correctly and need some settings adjustments ) and make sure that the paper isn’t too thin. Honestly there aren’t any special requirements for that. You can also use your tablet instead of printing though I do believe that printed portfolio looks more presentable.
Very informative, and I believe those tiips will help me build a stronger lifestyle model portfolio. You shared valuable points in such a short amount of time. Thank you!
really awesome tips! though i am not into this section but i love watching the journey of becoming a model..the pictures looked like really professional!
Hello, usually the books are given to models by their agencies. If you're a freelance model, you can either buy one on Amazon or anywhere else, just check the size ( at least A4 photo of bigger look great ). As an option you can also use the tablet to showcase your photos, this way you won't have to print them.
You're welcome! I'm happy to hear it :) Maybe you have some topics you'd like to see videos about / any requests? I'm currently creating a list of video ideas to shoot in the nearest future and would be thankful for your help. Have a nice day!
Tatiana Kurnosova mhmm.. I am not sure if this is something you could do a whole video about but maybe „what things a model/aspiring model could do for the photographer so that the work is easier? Like at a photoshooting. DOs and DONTs for the model“ I hope you get what I mean 😁 wish you a nice Friday 🤗
@@ksr9760 Yeah, I understand what you mean. Actually sounds interesting :) I need to think about it and how to present it properly. Anyways, thanks! And have a wonderful weekend!
I don’t own a portafolio but a model agency suggested me some photographers, I would like to know how do they usually work with you when it comes to do your portafolio for the first time having no experience as a model. Thanks 😊 and I really appreciate the video
Hello Devaki, some agencies invest in their models and help them with organizing tests shoots, making portfolio and etc. Others can simply recommend photographers (like in your case), but it doesn't mean that you absolutely have to work with that people if you're not sure. You can always find the ones you like - letting you know just in case. Other than that professional photographers should look at you, look at your portfolio or any other professional photos (if you have some), then let you know what else you need to add to your portfolio. The good photographer will help you with posing and everything, so there's nothing to worry about. I just recommend you to have a conversation with the photographer first and figure out whether you like him/her or not and only after that make a final decision. And of course the photographer's portfolio should be good + he/she should have an experience in fashion. if you haven't seen one more video about modeling portfolio do's and dont's I also suggest you to watch it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zoS8IWwQVOg.html And if you will work without a stylist, please also see my videos with ourfit ideas for model test shoots ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_xUQjAvcAY4.html and the basic clothes for the test shoots / any photoshoots ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pv7mKsA2Xvc.html It should help you as well. Good luck! And please let me know how everything will go :)
@@TatianaKurnosova thank you for your reply ☺️... I don’t work with a stylist and that was actually my biggest doubt since I need different styles for the photographies so that the agencies can see different perspectives of myself... @@RLujan Hello Regina, sorry for the late reply. If it's a printed portfolio, then use the hi-res photos for printing and for the digital version just choose the best quality that will look good on your device. There are no particular rules here.
Hello, the portfolio itself is a combination of different photos / model works that are mainly showing the ability of model to work and usually it takes some time to create it. Sometimes it can be done in one photoshoot too, but it’s quite hard… Coming to your question - if you’re going to do a portfolio at once - you need to show the variety of looks, same with the makeup. If you’ve never had professional photo shoots before and it’s your first one, I recommend you to have more natural looks ( like the ones for the test shoots ) with no makeup at all or minimal natural looking makeup. You can refer to this model test shoot video as an example ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C1eUfT2ZAQ8.html It is important to show your natural beauty first, everything else can be added step by step. So, start with simple looks, then change it to different ones that will go good with your looks ( wardrobe ). If you’re serious about it I’d also recommend you to work together with the stylist and MUAH. And I have one more video about modeling portfolios with more detailed advices, I believe it may be helpful for you too ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zoS8IWwQVOg.html And the playlist with model portfolio / book examples ru-vid.com/group/PL2n0G6Jp9TLbBRtMQ8CvSVI4kKNw5x8_C Wishing you best of luck! ❤️
This is a great video. I did a little bit of petite modeling in my young years! I wish someone had given me great advice like this. Also, I wish RU-vid had been around, or even the internet! Yes, I'm aging myself! (Melanie)
Thank you so much Melanie! It sounds amazing :) Have you thought about getting back to modeling? There are plently of opportunities these days, because of the diversity trend and it's amazing in my opinion.
Unfortunately showing your portfolio to the clients on the phone doesn't look professional. Tablet is OK, because at least there you can see some details ( and it should be at least average size tablet, not the smallest one ). There's no point in showing the photos of you when the person can't see you. The professionalism is all about those small details. Old - fashioned printed portfolio is OK too. Printed photos always look amazing. I personally suggest having a big laptop, because printing is quite pricey. And you constantly need to update your portfolio, so... Anyways, good luck! 😊
This video gave me a lot of information that I really need. I've recently decided that I want to start a modeling career. I don't have a portfolio right now. But I am going to start building one once I have my pictures taken. I have been told by a lot of people for years that I have the body of a model. I am 5'11 and skinny.
I'm happy it was helpful! And good luck with modeling ❤️ If you would like to know more information about how to get started, feel free to check my other videos with modeling tips :)
Hi Addisyn, yes, height is problem when it comes to modeling. I've talked about industry standards and requirements in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uYD5QD-iXeY.html But luckily the fashion world becomes more open to changes and sometimes it's possible to do modeling as a hobby or finding a niche in local markets. If you're interested, I've also mentioned freelance modeling in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_sPK2Ewy-U.html I'm explaining the different scenarios of becoming a model and how you can start working and finding your first clients. If your parents support you, you can show them these videos and I'm sure will help you to make first steps to modeling career :) Good luck!
Hello, I don’t really understand your question… Usually model has professional photos taken for her by a photographer and most of the times they edit pictures ( it can be a minor edit like colour correction etc ). If you are talking about editing the pictures that photographer has given to you already - then it’s not professional and disrespectful too. Models shouldn’t do any modifications to the photos. Hope this answers your question :)
Ideally 15-20, but if you have less, then put as many as you have. Just don’t include similar ones = better having less pictures than having the same ones. I have one more video about modeling portfolio here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zoS8IWwQVOg.html Basically it’s Part 2 with more detailed advices. For a beginner, is it better to find a model agency first or make a modeling portfolio myself? I will become a catwalk model but I am 5'5, is there still a possibility of becoming one? How many of my time should I sacrifice while trying to become a model? Because in september I'll be going to university and I would like to know if I can do both
Hello, it's possible to both work as model and study at University, especially in the beginning of your career. You can try it, then figure out what works best for you. If it's a high-quality photo that looks professional, then yes :) Just remember - portfolio should be beneficial for you, it has to show your best sides, your ability to work etc. If the photo is good and can help you achieve all this, it doesn't matter who took it.
Hi Gayatri, so sad to hear that you haven't tried it... May I ask why do you think modeling requires lots of expenses?

Hello, first of all I suggest you to watch my video "How to become a model" where I'm giving a step by step guide on how to begin either as agency represented or freelance model ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_sPK2Ewy-U.html You also need to check if you fit into industry standards, here's a whole video about it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uYD5QD-iXeY.html and if you do, you don't need to put together a portfolio - I recommend you to contact modeling agencies right away. You don't need a portfolio to start modeling (I'm explaining everything in those videos and some others on my channel, please watch them too before spending money on portfolio making) as an agency represented model. But if you would like to work freelance, then building a portfolio is a good idea. And yes, one photographer can take pictures of different concepts, but only if he's a good professional and you know that he / she knows how fashion industry works. Otherwise it's always better to work with several photographers + you will gain the experience. You can choose any good - looking book preferrably made of leather, because it looks more presentable. For example, I found some good books on ebay. If you're planning to work freelance, then I suggest you to buy one, but if you are going to sign in with an agency, it's not really necessary, because most of the agencies will provide the book with their logo on the cover. And also many of industry professional prefer to use the tablets now.
I'm happy to hear it :) There's one more video about models portfolio on my channel, I talk more about specific details there (and this one is about the basics). Feel free to check it out if interested ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zoS8IWwQVOg.html 🌸
