This is not a guide on sizing. This is how to quickly size a hammer as you create it.
I'm trying to help flow artists create a new and ground shattering practice fire prop, In under 5 minutes.
I use this process for my students. I hope this helps people to get the hammers in the peoples hands.
I've uses lots of different kinds of ropes. i really can't say what i like the best lots have different advantages. Ultimately 1/4 inch diameter is best for aerodynamics, any thinner starts to feel 'flossy'
I encourage people to try new techniques. You could make use out of some glue. I am using some special tools to make these props. I have a 1/4in splicing fid (from Dark monk), and I'm using Smithy rope (from Charley's shop Lantersmith).

You could get away with a pen, and some 1/4in polyester rope from the hardware store (for example feel free to improvise). but if you want to take the step on buying the fid you could make other people hammers really fast and easy.
