This channel has inspired me to grow. Today I planted my first seeds. Tomatoes (two varieties) and rocket. So exciting to see the results. Watching the tomato video the other week with the flowerbeds inspired me.

suburban homestead also a quick update; the more I hit “like” on gardening videos, the more show up in my recommendations and feed.. from my most watched channels. Also, RU-vid pushes a lot of your older content to me on my main page - I end up rewatching them because I learn something new each time. Although newer channels being pushed to me to discover aren’t that many; but I’ll see variety of videos from variety of channels being pushed around what I search (eg searched “growing baby corn” yesterday and now have 30% of my recommendations around corn growing videos.

I've been so thankful for your videos especially this season as I finally moved to a home with a south facing yard that's not rocks and mulch like I was renting for 5 years. I did everything in containers and I'm so looking forward to planting directly in the soil and setting free the plants that have been stuck in containers for years. I'm also looking forward to see how the plants from seeds I saved year after year adapt to no longer being confined to containers.

Don’t forget ppl - call 811 before digging- utilities will come out and mark locations of electric,propane,internet etc for free so you don’t hit a line and get a large bill.
@suburbanhomestead

That is true. Although most utilities are way deeper than what you want to go. But better be safe than sorry.

suburban homestead yes - my property for example some previous owner installed an outlet in the middle of the yard. It’s great but we have no idea if they followed depth guides lol so we had it marked and just don’t dig anything near it we made it a pathway 😊

A few summers ago I had a rush of enthusiasm and put in a box garden. Each box is 3x3, 9 total on the west end with 2 4x4 and 2 3x3 on the east end with a working area between. I stapled two layers of 30 year weed block to the boxes, flipped them over and arranged them with 12" between each, just enough room to fit cheapie paving stones between for a walkway with more weed block underneath. Then I worked pea gravel in between like grout to secure them and help stop anything that might decide to drop in from setting up home. Then I used t posts and recycled welded wire to surround it all and make it deer and rabbit proof. It looked fantastic! Then I planted using square foot gardening and everything freaked out. It turned into a jungle and the linear geometry was lost. It was difficult harvesting because you couldn't even move around. Growing in it was a huge success.......but it was way too congested. Neglect took hold, and I'm going to refresh that area by removing the boxes to grow out front where I have dead areas from tree removal. Since it's still a protected area I will be splitting it into a dedicated bush bean and strawberry haven.

I'm sure your raised bed design will last a long time. I tried my first front yard garden last year, it was beautiful, and did not disappoint. I'm starting another one this year,but have decided to use sunflowers with my companion plants. 🍃🌻🌿

question, what do u do to avoid mole animals? 🤔im agraid to grow veggies on my yard since I'd heard some neightbourds complain about it🥺
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 3 года назад
For moles you have to dig out the soil and install a layer of metal mesh underneath, or grow in containers. Bur first plant it out normally for one season and see if it really is a problem worth drastic measures. Losing crops to animals is part of the learning process sometimes. There are also vibrating windmills that supposedly repel moles, but I have not tried them

I enjoy when you put clips of your songs in your videos :) Does this one, promise land, have Portuguese in it? I'm not familiar with the sound of the language but I think i remember you saying in an older video & in the ancestry video that you are of Brazilian decent? :) Anyway, it's beautiful! I have a raised bed in my back yard, i didnt get to use it last year because although we dont have groundhogs, we have raccoons & it was using my garden as a latrine :( it really freaked me out because of how contagious the parasites are etc so I was afraid to use the soil...i still am to be honest lol so i think i'll dig out the soil & make use of it in the compost or the soil we will be spreading grass seed in..i hope he doesnt come back this year! The raised bed is also a bit too deep so i think i'm going to cut one of the boards off & just move it over to run parallel with the one already there (36 inches away was our number too) & then i want to put like an archway of wire fencing between the 2 to do some horizontal growing for beans, cukes etc. :) .....also, i am trying to actively engage with likes & comments to each of your videos & share every few to my facebook page too, to help your youtube algorithm :)
