My yard is filled with $1 clearance perennials. They all looked so pitiful when I brought them home. Every year now I divide and transplant or give away the divisions. You really can achieve a lot on a small budget if you are patient.

For some reason in my area, which is northern California, some places sell barefoot trees for about $15. At this point they are only a twig, but with in a few year mines is about 7ft tall a producing lots of big size fruit. Raspberries have been my favorite though as they keep spreading and giving more and more fruit every year. Plus it keeps my nieces and nephews coming back to visit me which I love!

Good advice! Once a complete novice gardener, I threw myself in the deep end with fruit trees and plants for the promise off high yields with less intensive labour. Though it was hard loosing some of those valuable trees and plants, I learnt most valuable lessons and, thankfully enjoyed some success. I would say strawberries, and raspberries are good for the novice, a choice of early, mid, and late season, quite hardy and usually not too fussy, I find that if they don't like where they are, then usually, gradually migrate until they are happier and thriving. My blueberries did better when I helped them out by carefully moving them before too late. I got lucky with patience when I grew a mini kiwi, originating from Siberia(!), Issai is self pollinating, hardy enough to establish in this here cold and damp climate; the fruit is good, each as big as a grape, slightly sweeter and great as dried fruit. It's encouraging when one can finally bring past experience and that hard gained wisdom into practice, to gain that anticipated satisfaction and the benefits from new plants, promising a more fruitful future :-) I love the pergolas you made, they look so well!

I was able to get 7 raspberries for free, my neighbor knew someone that was thinning their patch. I also got a blueberry, and blackberry from Walmart for $5 each in early April. I wasn't sure if they were going to make it as we had freezing temps and snow after I put them in the ground. They made it and now growing. Just hope the grasshoppers, that are coming on like the plague , don't strip them. Other than those I have been trying to grow fruit trees from seed. I almost had a cherry tree started but it didn't make it past the first two leaves.

I too watched the sun for a year but then figured out I could mark the sun in the winter and summer solstice at noon and know the swath of sky it travels during my year which makes it handy to place new plants against the 60’ wall of trees that surrounds me. Also look into the newer style of planting perennials where you loosen the root ball and plant directly in native soil, then heavily top dress with compost and mulch. The idea is if the hole is richer than the surrounding soil the roots might not leave and it’s like having a potted plant. By top dressing you add nutrients quickly and slowly, and encourage better growth. I can’t say one way or the other but it makes sense enough for me to do it now

Great advice about watching where the sun travels across your land. Early on in my veggie gardening I planted tomatoes in a spot which had a lot of winter/spring Sun but by the time they started fruiting in summer they only got a couple hours sunlight and didn't do very well. It's an important lesson for new gardeners to learn.

Lovely! I planted a hardy kiwi yesterday. The one I planted last year in full sun got sun-scald, so I took a risk & planted this one in a shady spot. I love the experiments of gardening. Looking forward to seeing how yours grows too.

Great video! I have 2 kiwi plants. 1 male and a fruiting female. Where they are still alive, I wouldn’t say they are thriving. This video gave me an idea to move them to the south facing wall of my home. It is shaded by the neighbors but there is sun on about 4 feet up the wall. I’ll see. I have a feeling, they’re going to love this spot! Thanks again 💜

"I don't need anymore thorns in my life." Haha - I hear you! I have raspberries and blackberries growing wild on the back of my property. Wonderful fruit, but - ouch! In my garden, I planted gooseberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries without thorns, boysenberries, loganberries, mulberries, honeyberries, gojiberries, aroniaberries, red and black currants, Japanese wineberries, and cranberries. Oh and elderberries, but I suspect a bird ate some berries, deposited them in the garden and the two bushes grew without me having to plant them. I also wanted to mention I tried your recipe for baby kale salad. It was delicious! I never liked kale in a salad until I tried it your way. :)

@@suburbanhomestead The thornless varieties also don't seem to grow out of control with underground suckers; mine have been growing for two years and are still perfectly contained. The wild bush, on the other hand, I have to keep an eye on else it'll invade the neighbor's lawn and take root wherever it touches the ground, and become invasive there. The blackberry attempts to go everywhere and even tried to grow into my chicken coop - it's crazy! I hope you post more recipes now and then. I'm always interested in new ways to use what I grow.

Berries are so rewarding, they have brought much joy to garden chores. Many of the raspberries and blackberries in my garden were from free canes my neighbors and friends gave me when there berries had several years of established growth. I did buy one particular raspberry variety because I did not know anyone growing them to forage from and now I am able to give out canes of the salmon raspberry. I don't think Kiwi would do well on the coast of the Pacific North West but apples and blueberries do well in my climate. Your gentle spirit is always a pleasure to watch, thanks for bringing us your thoughts and creativity it is a blessing to me.

I can highly recommend the arctic kiwi and I found a variety that is self pollinating (not needing male and female) As I built a pergola on my terrace and even though it faces the sea with blowing salty air, itstill fruits quite nicely. It shares the pergola with a fine grapevine. I also love your gardening attire as I often garden in a wool tartan skirt, wellies and old cardi's so I tip my hat (which I also wear) to your garden garb.

As someone who grows berries, I have two issues, the raspberries tend to sucker out into areas where my lawnmower gets them, and the birds tend to eat them! 🤣 I grow raspberries, blackberries (finally getting success on those), blueberries, honeyberries (bell-shaped berries that taste like a mix between raspberries and blueberries - birds always snag the ripe ones), strawberries (birds and squirrels pick them), currants and gooseberries. Quite literally, all I do is plant them, all but neglect them, and next year, I have plenty of berries.

I totally agree! Berries, especially blueberries, even grow well in planters. Don't even get me started on strawberries :). I've also found that miniature trees of citrine fruits, pears and apples work well for small spaces and are sturdier than larger varieties. They go on sale after planting season is usually over.

We are fortunate that the impatience of most becomes our windfall. I rarely look for prime specimens because I too won't pay full price if it's not necessary. I've lost track of the various bargains I've lucked out on, but end of season clearance make up a good 95% of my perennials. Not all survived but it was worth a shot. Generally, the tougher shape they are the more intensive care they get. Pot them up with home compost and encourage some healthy root growth before putting it in ground. The latest acquisition is a dwarf apricot 50% off, the very last one available👍. My current project has me waiting for the roses to be marked down - I am so tired of mowing the front lawn area and will turn it into a rose garden instead 🌹🌹🌹

Great video! I always watch everything you produce. 3 years ago, I bought a self fertile kiwi Vine, just like the one you purchased. It turns out that the term self fertile is really a misnomer for these vines. In the three years I have grown into, it has thrived and is extremely Lush, but it does not produce fruit. After more research, I discovered that they really do need a second vine in order to pollinate correctly. I would encourage you not to waste three years like I did, and simply purchase a male Vine right away so that you can establish the pair of them as quickly as possible.

The grand majority of the plants that I grow are ones that I've gotten for free! I just join a few local Facebook groups for plants, "Bunz" trading, freecycle.org and the free craigslist section, as examples of places where I look for plants or sometimes make requests, trades or offers for cuttings. This past winter, someone on a facebook group was trimming and giving away over 30 raspberry canes, that of course like to spread underground almost like mint. I got about 10 of them, planted them in a container garden and have been so delighted to see so many raspberries growing from them this year. I have missed having garden raspberries! I loved the ones who grew below my window as a kid. They sometimes tasted like cotton candy to me! For some plants and herbs that I haven't been able to get through trades, I ask for plants or seeds as gifts for holidays or birthdays. ^.^ (Also, living in an urban area (where pesticides aren't allowed) and where there are often lots of planted borders of plants such as lavender, on local walks during autumn I sometimes collect seeds from them, knowing that the plants will soon be pruned or replaced)

I swear, plants are like animals from a shelter or a municipal holding. They know when they're rescued. And plants act different to people who truly love them. Rather than just having them in their yard 2bs statically pleasing. To go out and intermingle and truly love and appreciate plants somehow there's an energy exchanged. That planet became exactly what you loved about it and it grew because you rescued it. Nobody will tell me differently. They could try but I wouldn't listen. I miss my very plants I know where they grow and I know that they're not appreciated so one day I will sneak soon and try to put them in pots because I don't have a yard right now. What to do what to do?

great vid as always, but your kiwi info is a little off. most cold hardy kiwis are still m/f so the vast majority of varieties need both sexes to fruit. also there are two main species of cold hardy kiwi used, but the majority (besides the main kiwi species) are cold hardy. also the common kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) is zone 7 hardy, with some commercial kiwi varieties being zone 7 hardy as well. so you could grow normal kiwis on your property in a protected spot.
