Today in the MotoIQ Garage we're building a 1,400 horsepower LS based engine that will be powering Dai Yoshihara's Formula Drift BRZ but could be used for any racing format just the same. Not only does this engine make huge horsepower but it will do it reliably all season long without having to open it up for any serious maintenance!
If you want us to build your engine (we build all kinds) visit MotoIQ.com and fill out the form in the MotoIQ Garage Services tab at the top of the site.. or just click here: motoiq.com/mot...

As an LS fanboy I have to say this incredible. I am going to be building a 373ci 5.3 to turbocharge in a Silverado and I am going to try and use some of these tricks on my build. I didn't know alot of this was possible for my NA 416ci LS3 and my LS2 is just a low stress build. But the 373 will be boosted and built for more power and more abuse in mind.
@Realtime1501
@Realtime1501 4 года назад
We use the Bill Mitchell 9.800 deck block and push it to 1400hp for drifting builds as well we can run the exact same engine to 2200hp in drag or land speed racing which just shows what abuse a drift engine goes through We also prefer a higher crown on diamond pistons

Those internals are really something else. I am understanding more why going with a popular, highly developed engine platform makes so much sense for a motorsports application, 1000's of hours of iterative development and fine tuning into every component.

Yeah, every time people start digging on an LS like it's a lame swap or they're boo-hooing about how cliche it is, I'm just like "Dude there are reasons LS or K are the de-facto swaps, and while you might yawn, there's a lot you can do with a popular engine that you can't do with a volvo-headed ford motor. It really comes down to whether you're looking for novelty from the engine or reliability and ease of parts-sourcing." Obviously some people do engine swaps for less pragmatic reasons, and I'm not hating on wacky swaps at all, but there actually are very good reasons behind these types of swaps being popular and benefits that come directly from that popularity.

This thing could too probably have you pushed it? I want a garage built used part street Protouring 69 Camero but I am in the weeds and then I see 1000hp for $1000. How would you build. I want a turbo so it's drivable most of the time pump gas E85 even propane something not race gas. I want it to last 100K miles nothing billet, nothing custom low profile. Might do a gen 4 5.3 cam heads and a single turbo and be cool with 800. What would you do to have an everyman reliable 1400hp V8 for us with our sponsor money?

Im no expert but you may have been misunderstood and nobody has answered in 2y so i will. Notch: yes Offset: my guess is no. Looks like sleeve shifted during pressfit or maybe a heat cycle or boring or something and the corner of the cylinder wall sticking into the notch was then cut back to partially correct the accidental offset. Just a guess based on appearance. I bet the notches are all oversized and that small imperfection is negligible.

I saw a drift team that was running a 1000hp Toyota 3SGTE, and they had to run so much big dollar hardware in that engine plus had to do a full teardown and rebuild after every event. Whereas a turbo LS could probably live for an entire season, or maybe do a health examination in the middle if needbe. But some people want to be diehards for a particular brand, I don't blame them.

Sometimes, the best classroom is a junkyard. There's a couple of things I can see consistently that begs a question. Setting aside the correctable oiling issues, just exactly how much squirming is going on inside that crankcase? Iron crank. Aluminum block. They put a thrust bearing in the middle of the crank - how much longer does it get when it is at operating temperature and where is the biggest change? Does the block get longer?

As someone who has built my share of powerboat engines, I think you have some great points. However, one thing in your choices I cannot wrap my head around, is the cam chain drive. I would never run a big power mill like that with a chain. I've fixed broken motors that failed because the cam drive broke. So much is going on and so many harmonics are sent through that chain. A belt not only makes valve event timing even more precise, it absorbs a lot of harmonics. For the same reason I will never use a gear drive on anything but a circle track motor. Do yourself a favour, use a Jesel or equivalent belt drive. Makes adjustment and install easier too. Your thought of doing things similar to what we do in powerboating makes sense, as it means everything is overbuilt. But get rid of that chain, in that price bracket there's no reason not to.
@motoiq
@motoiq 2 года назад
We have used them before but we have had trouble with leaks from the front of the engine due to the weird seal they use. The belt itself is reliable. We haven't had a chain failure yet with many different builds. Until we found the combo that works for us, a custom comp cam with more gentile ramps and the Crower shaft rockers, we used to break springs, pushrods, and rocker parts a lot.

I'm curious. On the cryo treating. Does it help with any residual untempered martinsite. On the piston skirt shape. Technically it's called Cam Drop-off. Ideally yo only want a narrow band on the skirt to be touching the cylinder wall at a right angle to the crankshaft. Pistons have been made that way from the auotmtive manufacturers for years. We had Giddings & Lewis cam lathes that were programmed to cut a very specific profile into the piston skirt. G & L actually had special program they used for demonstrating just how good their control of the cutting tool was. Tey could run a machineycle and the G&L log would be machined into the skirt. The cutting tool was actually controlled with an amplifier

Do you think there is a market for that product? I will buy one if they build it! @motoiq 4 года назад
Most crank's are balanced from the manufacturer, so it should not be an issue. We get the rotating assemblies of all our builds balanced before engine assembly, so not an issue at all with our builds.

@@motoiq thank you for your reply! I submitted a request for quote form this morning as instructed in the video for a quote on a setup similar to this for my vehicle the blue car in the bubble next to this message (street/strip application, not drift). Looking forward to hearing back from you or your team on this. Have a great day!

this was a great video that answered a lot of question. some of it won't apply to my engine build though high hp not drift abused. If I sent in a list of questions on parts to choose would you guys respond yes or no for my build? thank you for all your knowledge. I really appreciate it.

Question, on your EJ video you also use inconel exhaust valves but you said you don’t turn down the diameter of the valve stem because you need it to endure the heat of the exhaust gasses. Can you explain why you opt to turn the diameter of the inconel exhaust valve for this application?
@motoiq
@motoiq 2 года назад
Because the valve came that way.

What is your opinion about camshaft less engines with "freevalve" for these high boost? It will make engine ligter because there is no camsfat and it's drive chains. And as valves is electric controled you can control it's opening and closing more precisly.
@motoiq
@motoiq 2 года назад
you need a 48 volt or higher electric system and the technology isn't proven.

The TIG weld on the reluctor wheel looks like it has a hair line crack in it, not sure if you noticed.
@motoiq
@motoiq 4 года назад
yes no big deal
@codylapoint
@codylapoint 3 года назад
Saw that too, you'll get that on any type of hard steel. Best way to avoid it is pre and post heat, but that could potentially warp the reluctor wheel. I think he is just banking on the weld to sorta key them together.

I'm curious what your thoughts are on the RHS block vs the LS next block. Does one offer advantages more than the other? Great videos by the way, keep em coming.
@motoiq
@motoiq 4 года назад
The LS Next block is beefier but must be modified on a mill to accommodate more than a 4" stroke.
@davidshockley8635
@davidshockley8635 4 года назад
@@motoiq thanks. Prob wont be building more than a 402 anyway but good to know the RHS can take a huge stroke. Love all the technical info you give us, much more entertaining.

A few questions for you Mike. 1. You mentioned that the bottom of the block is wider than a stock block. Does the stock oil pan fit the aftermarket block? If so, is the side outer most part of the block (in the oil pan area) wider/ thicker that the stock block? If so how much wider. The concern in width is due to fitting a 4l80e FWD transmission next to that block. 2. The next question would be: Pricing ?
@motoiq
@motoiq 2 года назад
Yes the stock pan rails fit. And engine like this with a dry sump is about $35,000 plus. A street motor can be built knocking a lot of cost out, like as much as 15k depending.
