Nice project and I will likely try and talk my friend out of his golf tee and ball mailbox but, the painting of treated lumber before it is really dried out is always a recipe for disaster no matter what you prime it with. Not to mention the movement as it dries out. I will be doing this with untreated and just waterproofing where it goes into the ground. Im so over pt lumber. Thanks for the free plans and nice work!

What a beautiful signpost! I going to copy that idea and build one here in Norway. Jon, nice project~! Wish that our property were big enough to have a name. :-) Obviously your project is completed, but I just saw an interesting product for setting posts called Sika Post Fix. It's an expanding foam product for non-structural applications. I have a few posts to set in my yard and one 33oz package is supposed to replace two 50 lbs bags of concrete. Didn't know if you've heard of it before. Available on Amazon, but cheaper at Home Depot. There are several RU-vid videos demo'ing it. Just FYI...

@itsdanbooth
@itsdanbooth 6 лет назад
Recovering_Californian you are supposed to wait 6 weeks before painting treated lumber. Also make sure it isn't damp. Ie if it rained within the past few days don't paint
@Recovering_Californian
@Recovering_Californian 6 лет назад
Thanks...that was likely my mistake.
@cavemanjoe7972
@cavemanjoe7972 6 лет назад
Recovering_Californian Probably not the best, but a really easy way to test pressure treated lumber for paint is to splash a little bit of water on it. If it beads up or sits there, it's too wet. If the wood soaks it up, then it'll soak up paint, too. Number of weeks/months or whatever is a bad measurement, because what would take maybe two months here in Georgia at 94-97% humidity might only take a week or two out in Arizona. Lots of factors, so that little test is easier for me, especially when people ask about a time frame for a project and I don't have any wood already drying.👍

How to build a mailbox post, the simple way: Step 1: Get a pressure treated 4x4 of appropriate length Step 2: Dig a hole in the ground. Step 3: Put the 4x4 in the hole. Step 4: Put Concrete in the hole. Step 5: Wait for concrete to set up. Step 6: Cuss because the pole is 10 degrees off of being square to the road, and now the concrete is set so it's too late to change it.

Eye Toldyoosso Mm... but it’s not a “ripoff”. Especially when the actual measurements are posted on the price stickers/signs in stores, lumbar yards, etc., it’s not a secret by any means. Its also really basic common knowledge, even the most green DIYer will know, or learn really quickly if they didn’t plan properly. LOL But no, seriously... most ppl going into a project already know this. It’s mentioned, like A LOT. When you go into everything already feeling like everyone/everything is out to get you, or get over on you in some way... naturally, everything - even simple, harmless & well-intentioned things will somehow seem personal, ill-intentioned & shady. Consider the positives in things instead... it really goes a long way, no matter how you look at it. Just a friendly tip from a stranger on the internet. lol Obviously, you’re 100% free to make/have your own choices/thoughts... but I, personally, feel like we’re never too old to learn something new, and life’s never too short, or too busy ;-) to give it a shot. (Even just a smidge.) 🤗 I hope you have a fantastic year! Happy 2020!!
