Love the idea... I did something similar two years ago.. but with larger slate bits... It looked amazing but in strong winds the slate stumbled and fell a couple of times. I took everything apart and thinking of doing another one... Today i was wondering if I could drill a whole through the slabs and that way... just placed them as flat as posible ... but I’m afraid to brake the slate... Untjl I saw you drilling through slate now! 😃I will definitely try.... 👍🏻
This is simply amazing, I have viewed all your videos and couple of them a dozen times, they are just simply soothing. I am in process of making something similar and I ended up getting Slate Tile from Lowes and using Masonary drill bit to drill holes and it just does not seem to be working and that made me wonder if I need to get any particular type of Slate? I have Carbon Mist Slate Glazed Porcelain Stone - and I believe the one you have in video is different than what I have. Where can I find similar to yours? TIA!
Thank you for the compliments! It let's me know my videos are worth the effort and acheive the desired effects. The tiles you have are probably not slate, but porcelain tiles made to look like slate stone. Porcelain is crazy hard and you won't be able to drill it. Real slate can be difficult to find at the big box stores these days, I found my tiles second hand.
Never! The plant roots clean and drink the water. You do have to refill the water occasionally. Certain types of rocks will leech salts into the water which will build up and create a toxic environment for the plants over time. Slate does not dissolve however, it is the best choice. I've had trouble with shale and river rocks in the past. They may look good but you'll begin to notice salt deposits forming on surfaces. Not ideal.
